Topix has an incredibly fishy, automated comment moderation system, no wonder they have so many trolls. Chris Tolle's wrote about the Anonymous Commenting phenomena here:
excerpt: "But looking at the numbers, eliminating anonymous comments is only going to limit the number of comments at the end of the day, not dramatically improve the quality of discourse on the web."
I first wrote about this article on Open Salon here:
Of course Tolle's means troll comments in counting these numbers, which hardly "improve" the quality of discourse on the web! Though apparently are a vehicle for Topix profit.
Topix claims to moderate their forums in the article:
Chris Tolles: "We have an AI based heat language detection based system to auto-moderate the posts prior to their being run, as well as a staff of human moderators which look over user flagged issues and handle complaints. Posts can be killed by either component to the system, and both are counted here."
Do they? hardly.
And they make it super-difficult to have super-revolting comments deleted, it takes days if at all.
I questioned Tolles on this:
Ginny Hoge: I found this fishy as well.
"We have an AI based heat language detection based system to auto-moderate the posts prior to their being run."
oh really? then why are Topix trolls allowed to post such vulgar language, uncensored?
"as well as a staff of human moderators which look over user flagged issues and handle complaints"
a staff of 2?
"Posts can be killed by either component to the system, and both are counted here."
bullshit. Sadism and ridiculously vile comments, are tolerated by your computer filtering system, this is no filter.
This gets back to the "new" ethics quip Tolles made, does he mean NO ethics?
I ask for Topix to address and fix their bottom-barrel-hatred facilitating practices, none is not good enough, and to repair their dismal comment moderation system.
I ask that they restore these threads to the "local watering hole" - places for REAL civic discourse, important political debate and awesome public discussion - they claim to be.
