Inventor, poet, copywriter, self described know it all when it comes to the fishing and eventual catching of big yellow mouth trout, especially those of the saltwater speckled variety. I don't like long walks on the beach, I would rather body surf for hours in 5 to 10 ft. swells.

Before you comment read the study....I think you might be surprised by how ignorant we all are about our own government.

When it comes to the goings-on in the news, some folks are more knowledgeable than others, with Republicans and older Americans scoring better on a current-events quiz.

In fact, out of the 12 multiple-choice questions asked in a Pew Research Center phone survey of more than 1,000 adults, Republicans answered an average of about 6 questions correctly compared with 5 for Democrats. (The survey was conducted between Jan. 14 and Jan. 17, and included cell phones and landlines.)

Republicans got the first question right in all cases....What is your name"?
I remember many, many years ago when I was in the 9th grade and my Geometry teacher was substituting as my Government teacher. Mr. Mancuso said, "People I am paid by the Public Schools to dumb you down, but it is your job and obligation to learn outside of this classroom the rules and the process of Constitutional Law...that you might survive and not perish under the weight of an oppressed public's stupidity." How glad I am that I paid attention.
Rated even though the conclusions of the survey are hardly surprising.
Interesting study. What I take from it is whether you got 5 out of 12 or 6 out of 12 right it doesn't speak well for conservatives or liberals. Good find. Rated.
Firestorm, I provided the quotes from a childhood hero of mine William F. Buckley Jr. The other stuff came from the study. Republicans got 6 of 12 correct and Democrats got 5 of 12 correct. The other comments are satirical in nature.
Well lookee lookee lookee ... here are the questions which seemed to stump people:

Even so, many people still talk the talk. For instance, even though respondents consistently expressed strong interest in the health care debate, just 32 percent knew the Senate passed its version of the legislation without a single Republican vote. And, in what proved to be the most difficult question on the quiz, just 26 percent knew that it takes 60 votes to break a filibuster in the Senate and force a vote on a bill.

Gee... I'd say those are questions I'd expect Republicans to know more than Democrats.

As far as the general proposition here ... please tell me why the "superstars" of the rightwing commentariat, Limabaugh, Beck and Hannity are all college flunkouts with admitted (or even convicted) drug or alcohol problems?

Rush's mother went around telling everybody her boy lasted one semester, got an F in everything, including Ballroom dancing?

I know this is a factoid, but as a liberal, let me tell you, the two Williams (Buckley and Safire) at least had some class and some real sign of intellect.

As far as really knowing anything hard, I'm a PhD scientist in the physical sciences. I don't know anybody in the physical sciences after Dr. Teller who I would describe as strongly Republican. All the middle of the roaders and the "Rockefeller Republicans and so on" .. .they all left when, to put it frankly, the Republican party became the party of dumb white racist/Yahoo resentment.

You guys are getting really desperate when you put up poll results like this. I have a suggestion, it comes from my daughter, when she was in third grade. All the girls in her class thought it was the height of funny to run around chanting

"Girls go to college to get more knowledge, boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider."

The Republicans need to stop going to Jupiter. Get a few more spokesmen who actually bothered to get through college, and can lay off the oxycontin.

I was raised by really conservative people incidentally, so I know conservative ... and the current Republicans aren't conservative, nor are the Teabaggers (check any urban slang dictionary for that one, I think it is pretty apt).
Oooo, a phone poll, yeah those are always accurate. So what was the return rate, 2%, 5%? Funny how they always leave those numbers off the "official" record.
I always love the pseudo intellectuals who have to qualify their lack of conversational skills by pointing out they have a doctorate from some online school for dunces. I believe that was the point of William F. Buckley's quote.
@Lee H, Hannity had drug or alcohol problems? Of course you can provide us with evidence of such.

Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity and others without degrees became successful because of the hard work they put in to get to the top of their professions. That's a fact, whether you like it or not. So called educated people like yourself have a terrible habit of looking down on people whom they believe to be below them because they may not have a college degree. Bill Gates, anyone?

Your comment about Teller remonds me of the lady who said, "How did Richard Nixon get elected? I don't know anyone who voted for him".
Lee H,

If nothing else you are verbose. Your argument I read in a transcript of a Rachel Madcow show from MSNBC. Let's put it this way, the left in this country is being run by the "Gang that can't shoot straight" and I don't mean that in the vernacular.
Always interesting here!
