Rhododendron Sunday

Rate: 38 Flag

P5280267

Rhododendron macrophyllum is the State Flower of Washington

I suppose one of the benefits to all of our rain is the beauty when the flowers bloom.

P5280269

They can grow to be quite tall.

May 29 2012

Here is a particularly beautiful one in my yard.

Azelias

Which I then put in my scanner. A technique I learned from Algis’ blog.

But I certainly have a lot more practicing to do.  It was an interesting experiment, however.

Scanned Azelia

Happy Sunday

OMG...is that last one scanned?
Yes, Algis. thanks to you. I looked for that post to link it but you must have taken it down.
They look a bit like our Southern Azaleas. I know next to nothing about horticulture...do you know if they are related? In any case, they are very pretty.
Yes Belle, Rhodies & Azaleas are related. Usually Rhododendrons grow much larger.
I take lots of flower pictures.. but these are amazing..
HUGGGGGGGGGGGG
These are breath taking
~R~
Ours gone now but had the same idea today. Went green leafs instead. :D
The purple throated one, Orpheus, is one of my favorites as well.
also: Orpheus - thanks I didn't know the name. Aren't they gorgeous?
I love rhododendrons, but have never seen bushes as big as yours. I always wish they would last longer. Nice pictures. The scanner ones just amaze me.
They sort of look like hibiscus, don't they? But, much prettier and diaphanous. So pretty.
aaahhhhhhhh..........

I spread my arms, I make one resonant sound. What luck, to stand in the midst of these.
All your photos are beautiful
I love the one in your yard
the color in the center of all the white
is similar to the color of my hair
The last scanner photo is wonderful
rated with love
And I'm thinking of those giant canvas prints that you can get now, stretched like paintings. These images have what my art history teachers used to call "inherent monumentality." Go large! These are stunning. /R
No Rhododendrons in paradise Trilogy and I sure miss seeing them.
TY TY for the show.
excellent pictures. You are one great shooter. Even with a scanner dear!!
Really beautiful! ~r
Outstanding! Kudos from a flower lover.
jl: Thanks. I think some of their allure is that they do not last.
Greg: Always glad to bring you joy. Arms outstretched.
RP: I too love that color in the midst of all that white.
nilesite: thanks - good idea - i have put some photos on canvas like that.
Mission: your welcome. No Rhodies in paradise? Too bad.
Thanks Joan, Linda, Chuck & Mary (sorry I missed a few) tg, Rita, terri, Deborah. Like a little sunshine on a Ssunday afternoon.
Pretty pick for a state flower, Trilogy. I get my fill of them when I visit Wilmington, DE. They don't bloom this far north unfortunately.
R♥
Marlene, Rhodies are among my favorite plants! This is a beautiful display and I know your part of the country is one of the spots where they do exceedingly well. For a number of years in the '50s and early '60s my grandfather had a nursery full of Rhodies he had started as cuttings or a similar plant propagation method.
I remember the late spring in Seattle when the whole city is ablaze with these beauties. You caught their essence so well. Thank you.
trilogy,

What stunning photographs!
Gorgeous!!!
So are the flowers!!!!

(gotcha) LOL
Vivid and beautiful, tril. I love that scanned photo too.

I can imagine that huge smile on Algis' face! I think I can see it from here!
beautiful colours! the last one kicks all kinds of ass. nice!
Oh, wow! Brings back such beautiful memories of growing up in Washington State. We had these mysterious bushes everywhere.
GLORIOUS BLOOMS AND PHOTOS.
The colors are fantastic!

Am trying to become more adept with my scanner. Need to get back to it. We lost most of our blossoms in the rain. They were early this year.
How I miss my rhodies! Gorgeous.
It's that time of year again. Lovely.
Absolutely fantastic plant. Great photos!
The last one is almost Georgia O'Keeffe-ish! :D
Stunning.

Even better viewed on a dreary Monday morning.
Thanks Marlene, the photos are beautiful...they remind me of my visit last spring when all the Rhodies were in bloom!
These are great. I love the Pacific NW, especially Orcas Island. I have to go there to get my "green fix" every so often; not much around here but brown and reddish brown rocks. These pics remind me how cool and refreshing everything is there.
Tril, the beautiful babies inside and now the beautiful flowers outside, you are blessed!!! R
Yes, Wendy, I sm blessed.
Liz: You must mean tulips!! (ha)
Gorgeous.

I once had the great pleasure of visiting England (Pacific NW type climate!) in rhododendron season - a whole estate with huge plants like little hills. I tried planting one here, not rhododendron territory. I'm trying again this year, with some kind of supposedly hardy variety. Wish me luck.
I can recall many lovely things about your state from a time when I visited there for about 10 days. So lush! The roads were immaculate! green everywhere. And wild brambles with blackberries by the thousands everywhere I looked. So much beauty.
Guess I was there too late in the year to view the rhododendrons, however. Wish I'd been allowed to see such a lovely spectacle.
Peace to you

These are so beautiful that they're almost indecent. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, how did I miss this Sunday? A Beautiful Post~
