Of political donations, anyway.
You can watch the video from the Rachel Maddow show here. For some reason, MSNBC videos do not embed here.
But in any case, if you don't feel like watching the video, the Chargers organization has donated $2.4 million to politicians since 1990, virtually all of it to republicans. Norv Turner, the head coach of the Chargers, donated $2,300 to John McCain in the past year.
The $2.4 million the Chargers have donated is four times that of their nearest competitor, the Texans. But, the Texans haven't been in the league as long, so it's possible they'll catch up.
This is not surprising. The owner of the Chargers, Alex Spanos, is a well known donor to republican candidates. But he's also a big time philanthropist. You can check out some of his philanthropic activities here. And no, the $92 million contract he approved with Philip Rivers does not count.
And if ever there was proof that too many politically focused people are totally clueless about sports, it's in the characterization of the Chargers by people like Maddow and the writer of the Open Secrets article. While it is true that the Chargers have advanced to the Super Bowl just one time in their history, they do have an pre-merger AFL championship and they have been one of the NFL's elite teams for the past five or six years.
Also, Maddow took the chance to take a shot at the Chargers so bad that it's good fight song.
