Sharing is good: Our new Facebook tool

Rate: 21 Flag

As some of you may have noticed, we've rolled out a new (and very exciting) way for you to grow your audience on Open in the last few days. At the top of every post, next to the rating button, we've added a handy Facebook "like" button that looks like this:

Facebook like button

When you click on the "like" button  (and you're logged into your Facebook account) it will automatically post the link into your newsfeed (eg. "Thomas Rogers likes 'Kittens Rule' by Kerry Lauerman"). It's a great way to share Open Salon posts with your friends and give your fellow bloggers some extra love. So check it out -- and start clicking!

Thanks - it's been amazing to get feedback from sharing both my own work and the work of others on ye olde Facebook. thanks for making it even easier.
So that's what that is. I like the concept. Almost wish I hadn't deactivated my FB account now.
Also like the new comment feature. I was surprised when I clicked on one of my own comments yesterday, left side of my blog, that it took me directly to the where my comment was made at their blog. This saves a lot of 'scrolling down' time in the case of blogs with long comment threads.
Needless to say too, thanks for pressing the whatever it is button on the mainframe there at HQ and adjusting the top rated activity feed... and for being a good sport about my cartoons.
Ha! No problem, Trig.

(And I'm a pretty hard guy to offend.)
I think it's completely brilliant! xox
Play tennis Thomas?
Great Idea!
Any chance of getting a button installed for my Geocities Account?
I've been using it! OS shows up on my FB a couple of times a week, and this makes it even easier.
Thanks so much Thomas! Like Trig, I am wishing I had a FB account now. I'll have to ponder that one again I think...
I like the new "Like" button. It's almost a good as the "Rate" button.

I have linked my blog on FB through "Networked Blogs." It puts my blog on my FB page and allows other to subscribe to it. I'm pretty happy with this option.

Thanks for making OS better and better. I love this place!
Yes. Kittens Rule, Kathy.
So easy a cave man could do it.

And who are you, and why are you here?

I'll send you a pm with all my brilliant ideas on what you need to be doing around here once I get all pissy and over 0.15 in blood alcohol content.

Your feeds suck, by the way.

(What can I say. Sometimes I just crack me up.)
Love it! Now -- can you make my page pink?
"(And I'm a pretty hard guy to offend.)" Hmm, let's ask Freaky about that... heh

Great upgrades, obviously lots of hard work, if you need Xanax, let us know. Or you could just reread Kittens Rule.
I have been doing this myself, but now you've made it easier. Good idea! Thanks
Now I wish I could just see who it was that was sharing my stuff on FB...
Sharing Open House with Facebook can go around into Delicious, Digg, Reddit, Stumble Upon, and so on...
Sharing is good, unless it's a VD, and then, not so much.

~nodding~

Do you think someday we could get a report as spam button for the comment section? For the damn...oops, I mean, loveable spammers who like to swarm at night?? You press the button and whoosh, them muthertruckers are gone quicker!!

I mean, your super wonderful techzzzz made the Facebook button a reality!! CAN THEY NOT MAKE A KILL A SPAMMER BUTTON as well!!!

Thanks.

Your friend,

Tink

By the way, Kerry is right, cats rulez, Dawgs drool!!!!!

**wanders off**
As of yesterday my thumbnails would not come up, only one for Open Salon on facebook. Is this intentional ? I prefer my thumbnails to show!
wow, great feature!
nice eyes.
At first I thought great feature --now I wonder how much this will "cannibalize" people actually using the FB share button and putting a proper link in their posts online. Having a little preview -- and better yet -- a comment from someone on FB goes way further.

But I guess more is more!

It's weird though, that this somehow seems to have disabled thumbnails in FB -- and searching for OS articles on FB also seems to be tripping out. I'm guessing it's a FB thing. They are forever and always mucking up their system...

Anyway, thanks.
I just noticed this on my blog this morning ... a little perturbed, since I do facebook under my real name and OS under a pseudonym ... but the "like" thing shows up on OTHER people's FB, not mine?

(Not that it matters in the end - I have nothing to hide. And if/when I do, I can come up with another ID, rules or no rules. Dr. Feelbad (formerly Plain Grit) can maybe take care of my bad stuff...)
After discovering how many commercial institutions were, as a result of my Facebook account, attached to me like parasitic amprey eels, it took me three months of diligent scraping to get away from Facebook.

If OS is in any way connected to this social parasite, I need to reconsider this venue as a suitable place to post my work.

I guess that means I'll never click the LIKE button. Those of you who want to share all the intimate details of your life with every stranger and potential stalker in the world to help salon.com get more hits, proceed.
Thanks! I like this thoughtful new feature. I've "liked" several articles.

Since they show up on my profile, so I have to watch the ones with spicy words in the title, but it's good to give people exposure to my two or three Globs playing friends.
Not clearly following some of the comments here. Have no interest in FB. Is it possible that any of my work could appear there without my consent? That would stun me to total silence. Hope you will reply.
Yeah, I'm not real thrilled about this either.
It seems I can no longer upload a photo from my post when I use the post feature as I did before. That is really unfortunate.
Thomas. My page is still blue.
