IMAGINE IF THE TEA PARTY WAS BLACK. by Tim Wise

Rate: 2 Flag

I normally wouldn't post something I didn't write, but this was too good and too true to pass up.  Enjoy.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let’s play a game, shall we? The name of the game is called “Imagine.” The way it’s played is simple: we’ll envision recent happenings in the news, but then change them up a bit. Instead of envisioning white people as the main actors in the scenes we’ll conjure - the ones who are driving the action - we’ll envision black folks or other people of color instead. The object of the game is to imagine the public reaction to the events or incidents, if the main actors were of color, rather than white. Whoever gains the most insight into the workings of race in America, at the end of the game, wins.

So let’s begin.

Imagine that hundreds of black protesters were to descend upon Washington DC and Northern Virginia, just a few miles from the Capitol and White House, armed with AK-47s, assorted handguns, and ammunition. And imagine that some of these protesters —the black protesters — spoke of the need for political revolution, and possibly even armed conflict in the event that laws they didn’t like were enforced by the government? Would these protester — these black protesters with guns — be seen as brave defenders of the Second Amendment, or would they be viewed by most whites as a danger to the republic? What if they were Arab-Americans? Because, after all, that’s what happened recently when white gun enthusiasts descended upon the nation’s capital, arms in hand, and verbally announced their readiness to make war on the country’s political leaders if the need arose.

Imagine that white members of Congress, while walking to work, were surrounded by thousands of angry black people, one of whom proceeded to spit on one of those congressmen for not voting the way the black demonstrators desired. Would the protesters be seen as merely patriotic Americans voicing their opinions, or as an angry, potentially violent, and even insurrectionary mob? After all, this is what white Tea Party protesters did recently in Washington.

Imagine that a rap artist were to say, in reference to a white president: “He’s a piece of shit and I told him to suck on my machine gun.” Because that’s what rocker Ted Nugent said recently about President Obama.

Imagine that a prominent mainstream black political commentator had long employed an overt bigot as Executive Director of his organization, and that this bigot regularly participated in black separatist conferences, and once assaulted a white person while calling them by a racial slur. When that prominent black commentator and his sister — who also works for the organization — defended the bigot as a good guy who was misunderstood and “going through a tough time in his life” would anyone accept their excuse-making? Would that commentator still have a place on a mainstream network? Because that’s what happened in the real world, when Pat Buchanan employed as Executive Director of his group, America’s Cause, a blatant racist who did all these things, or at least their white equivalents: attending white separatist conferences and attacking a black woman while calling her the n-word.

Imagine that a black radio host were to suggest that the only way to get promoted in the administration of a white president is by “hating black people,” or that a prominent white person had only endorsed a white presidential candidate as an act of racial bonding, or blamed a white president for a fight on a school bus in which a black kid was jumped by two white kids, or said that he wouldn’t want to kill all conservatives, but rather, would like to leave just enough—“living fossils” as he called them—“so we will never forget what these people stood for.” After all, these are things that Rush Limbaugh has said, about Barack Obama’s administration, Colin Powell’s endorsement of Barack Obama, a fight on a school bus in Belleville, Illinois in which two black kids beat up a white kid, and about liberals, generally.

Imagine that a black pastor, formerly a member of the U.S. military, were to declare, as part of his opposition to a white president’s policies, that he was ready to “suit up, get my gun, go to Washington, and do what they trained me to do.” This is, after all, what Pastor Stan Craig said recently at a Tea Party rally in Greenville, South Carolina.

Imagine a black radio talk show host gleefully predicting a revolution by people of color if the government continues to be dominated by the rich white men who have been “destroying” the country, or if said radio personality were to call Christians or Jews non-humans, or say that when it came to conservatives, the best solution would be to “hang ‘em high.” And what would happen to any congressional representative who praised that commentator for “speaking common sense” and likened his hate talk to “American values?” After all, those are among the things said by radio host and best-selling author Michael Savage, predicting white revolution in the face of multiculturalism, or said by Savage about Muslims and liberals, respectively. And it was Congressman Culbertson, from Texas, who praised Savage in that way, despite his hateful rhetoric.

Imagine a black political commentator suggesting that the only thing the guy who flew his plane into the Austin, Texas IRS building did wrong was not blowing up Fox News instead. This is, after all, what Anne Coulter said about Tim McVeigh, when she noted that his only mistake was not blowing up the New York Times.

Imagine that a popular black liberal website posted comments about the daughter of a white president, calling her “typical redneck trash,” or a “whore” whose mother entertains her by “making monkey sounds.” After all that’s comparable to what conservatives posted about Malia Obama on freerepublic.com last year, when they referred to her as “ghetto trash.”

Imagine that black protesters at a large political rally were walking around with signs calling for the lynching of their congressional enemies. Because that’s what white conservatives did last year, in reference to Democratic party leaders in Congress.

In other words, imagine that even one-third of the anger and vitriol currently being hurled at President Obama, by folks who are almost exclusively white, were being aimed, instead, at a white president, by people of color. How many whites viewing the anger, the hatred, the contempt for that white president would then wax eloquent about free speech, and the glories of democracy? And how many would be calling for further crackdowns on thuggish behavior, and investigations into the radical agendas of those same people of color?

To ask any of these questions is to answer them. Protest is only seen as fundamentally American when those who have long had the luxury of seeing themselves as prototypically American engage in it. When the dangerous and dark “other” does so, however, it isn’t viewed as normal or natural, let alone patriotic. Which is why Rush Limbaugh could say, this past week, that the Tea Parties are the first time since the Civil War that ordinary, common Americans stood up for their rights: a statement that erases the normalcy and “American-ness” of blacks in the civil rights struggle, not to mention women in the fight for suffrage and equality, working people in the fight for better working conditions, and LGBT folks as they struggle to be treated as full and equal human beings.

And this, my friends, is what white privilege is all about. The ability to threaten others, to engage in violent and incendiary rhetoric without consequence, to be viewed as patriotic and normal no matter what you do, and never to be feared and despised as people of color would be, if they tried to get away with half the shit we do, on a daily basis.

Game Over.

Yes, game over indeed. Where is this piece from? Is this Tim Wise who wrote "White Like Me?" _r
Yes, I believe it's the same Tim Wise.
It is an excellent piece. Thanks.
It's not hard to imagine. We would see armed riot police swarming on the scene claiming they were attacked by the protesters. Heck they wouldn't have to be Black, that happens to "them evil liberals" when they gather to speak out.
I know all this, but to see it together like Wise has done here is a gut-punch. Most excellent piece. Each paragraph should be posted as one of those big advertisements on the side of busses. Oh, but then the busses would be attacked, turned over, and set on fire by teabaggers.
It's fun to attack those you don't agree with by throwing down a racial card. It's a great go-to move, eh?

Well, perhaps one day you will stop HATING others who don't share your opinion and you will abandon your efforts to discriminate against them the way you are accusing them of discriminating against you.

Facts: The groups of Tea Party supporters are comprised primarily of retirement-aged, hard working blue-collars, professionals, and BLACK people. Huh, that's weird.

Yeah, Glenn Beck actually did a few episodes where his studio was FILLED with black people who were pretty pissed of at how naive people like you are making them look.

C'mon, let's drop the sensationalism. AK-47's near the White House?! Really? The FACT is, people in these groups are "peacefully assembling" (you may have heard of that in that little document called the Constitution - oh, that's right...people like you are looking to re-right it).

When we put all the racist bull crap aside and start to act like HUMANS without a separatist agenda, only then will we realize the true potential strength of OUR nation.

Racism - Chris Matthews, "I forgot he was black tonight for an hour." Your "enemy" could be in YOUR own party?!
Spoken like a TRUE Conservative.

First off, I didn't write this.... I agree with it, but I didn't write it.. so any wording in this piece you have a problem with; take it up with Tim Wise.

Secondly, I'm not playing anyone's race card. I find it intersting the double standard that Conservatives have. If it WERE a bunch of black people doing what the Tea Party continues to do; the response would be entirely different. That's not playing a race card or calling anyone racist. It's simple fact.

No one SAID anything about Christ Matthew's statement regarding Obama. I found it a lil on the "wow" side myself when he said it.

You can say all you want Liberals are attempting to change the Constitution, but what we're doing is trying live in peace within the boundaries provided by the document. I believe it's CONSERVATIVES who constantly try to change it.

Let's let a group of black folks surround Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh's home with AK 47s and see how that plays out. THEN tell me that this article doesn't hold truth.

Unless you're black in these United States, you actually have no fricken idea what you're talking about.
"If it WERE a bunch of black people doing what the Tea Party continues to do; the response would be entirely different. That's not playing a race card or calling anyone racist. It's simple fact."

TOTAL CONTRADICTION! It's not racist?!

No one with AK-47's (or any other kind of gun) are surrounding the White House. Seriously, NO ONE!

SENSATIONALISM!

"We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity."

LIBERAL VIOLENCE!

(This is where I drop the microphone and walk off the stage having made my point. "Unless your black in these United States..." Who says this BULL SHIT?!

Bottom line: The article utilizes a racist angle to make a racist point. The Tea Party (I am not a member - by the way, I am Green), is just a group of PEOPLE with a political view. I salute anyone who wants to express their point, have an opinion, etc. Especially when it doesn't match mine.

When we are exposed to contrast...we learn.

Black president...who cares? Let's have a green president! How 'bout a purple one? Let's not elect or back a president on race or ethnic origin...that is sooo passe.

Let's elect a president on issues. I would vote for Colin Powell ANY DAY because he is a MAN I agree with on most issues. Oh, is he black?

I'd also buy YOU a beer any time you'd like to discuss politics in person...logically.
You know, for not being a Tea Partier, you sure do defend them in a Tea Party kinda way.

The piece is written to show the double standard of what is acceptable. It doesn't actually CALL anyone racist. It brings a race discussion into current events. But Heaven forbid we have an actual adult discussion on race.

There were no guns around the White House because of DC Law.. but don't let that get in the way of your disjointed rant... it's just mere fact. The groups WANTED to march w/ their guns on the White House but they couldn't......

I have YET to meet a Liberal who says we should invade anyone and make them Christians.... That's more of a Conservative creed. We tend to let people do their thing... just respect differences....

I don't agree with the far far left anymore than I agree with the far far right. There are some people out there who take things too far. Present company definately included. I respect anyone's beliefs as long as they can articulate them in a respectful manner. When one turns argumentative, then I tend to shut down.... I didn't seek you out and ask you to agree with this post. (that once again, *I* didn't write)... I put it up here because it was an interesting take on a subject that interests me, and you chose to comment it on it in a disrespectful and argumentative manner.

And *I* say that "bullshit"... because once again, you have no clue what you're talking about, and you're talking in circles... which leads me to my final point.

You sir, are an idiot.

I would not have a drink w/ you for two reasons: 1) I don't drink beer. It's gross. 2) I avoid discussing politics with idiots. You came into this discussion in an argumentative manner, and in all actuality, my time is too valuable to me to waste it arguing with an idiot who talks in circles....

(PS. I wouldn't vote for Colin Powell in anything... and hey, look at that, that's a black person not supporting another.. OBVIOUSLY I'm a separatist!)

I'm done talking to you, you bore me.
Yet another reason that I absolutely adore you. You took exactly what I was thinking, erased all of the profanity, cleaned up the ghetto languange, deleted a little fingerpointing and name calling, and totally made it sound like it came from an actual grown up. *LOL* Thank you!

And PS: Was I the only one that noticed that this guy (?) apparently created a whole seperate account to voice his opinion on this ONE post? No information, no identifying characteristics, nothing to actually make him stand out and be accountable for his dumbass ethics, just a lot of ranting behind a screen of anonymity.

Wanna bet that he's a Palin supporter and thought GW did a TERRIFIC job? ;)
Beer is gross...LOL

Anonymity? I live in Baltimore...who wants to come see me?

Not an article about race? Then why the hell does it say "Imagine if the Tea Party was BLACK".

Whoa...you are brilliant!

Game over.
Okay, see, here's the thing Creep-o. Nobody would think about hunting you down in any city simply because you're an idiot with a skewed sense of judgement. Know why? Because you're entitled to your stupidty, your guns, and your beliefs. We get that. For you to even voice the idea that someone might turn this little online disagreement into a full, hands on, physical shoving match, definitely highlights your mental age and stability.

News Flash. You're entertaining. You post, my wife calls me, we laugh at you, and then we move on with our days. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it is NOT that serious, and you are NOT that important. So you go on and continue to spew your lunacy all over your keyboard, but I, for one, am done. I have more exciting things to look forward to today than to wonder what you're doing down there in your mother's basement today.

PS: The next time you start off a post with "It's fun to attack those you don't agree with .....", maybe you could use your REAL account, with your REAL screen name. You creating a whole different one, just shows the rest of us how big of a pussy you must be to not be able to stand up with your own opinion - even when you're doing so behind a computer screen.
Contradictions and name calling abound.

I'll go back to speaking directly about the POINT and not all the trash-talk that has been introduced here to side-track the ORIGINAL discussion. (This is a typical liberal tactic utilized when the argument becomes to thin to defend, but I digress.)

"The piece is written to show the double standard of what is acceptable."

OK, the point was made that BLACKS would be arrested if they had guns around the White House. But then, you go on to say...

"There were no guns around the White House because of DC Law."

OK, so WHITES would ALSO be arrested if they had guns around the White House.

You've failed here, and all the liberal whining from whom ever the other contributor is (by the way, I didn't waste me time on your comment because you just started off sounding silly and off point...TSO) won't hide that the article is complete BS that actual perpetuates...racism and separatism.

You said...

"You came into this discussion in an argumentative manner, and in all actuality, my time is too valuable to me to waste it arguing with an idiot who talks in circles."

When it is you who has actually gone in a circle (point made above about guns with whites and blacks...SAME laws apply to both).

Argumentative?! Yup, that's called a discussion. Without an argument you can go on with a closed-minded belief and never have to venture out and actually learn anything.

At the end of the day, I have love for you and anyone else who agrees or disagrees. You may choose to walk away with hatred for me or not, that's on you. I will enjoy my day knowing that I don't hate you - or anyone.

Peace.
This will really hurt your feelings...I am BLACK and a WOMAN!

*I'm not a Tea Party "member", but I do agree with a LOT of what they stand for. Upholding the Constitution is one of those ideals. Meanwhile, the Progressive/Liberal movement IS for re-writing it. Just for fun, if you want to LEARN something, Google "Cloward-Piven".
