Take Direct Action Against Genetic Modification!

Rate: 2 Flag
Label It Yourself label

According to Natural News, the refusal of federal and state governments to require mandatory labeling of genetically modified foods has led a US grassroots network calling themselves “Label it Yourself” to take matters into their own hands. They have started their own campaign to affix warning labels on processed and non-organic food products that likely contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Anyone with a computer and printer can join. Download GMO warning stickers at Label It Yourself. Print them out on Avery 5164 labels (4.25 x 3.33 in). No need to join a group or attend boring meetings. It’s more fun, of course, to do it with friends.

Choosing Foods to Label

Natural News reports that GMOs have become so prevalent throughout the US food supply that most non-organic foods sold in stores today, particularly those that are processed, contain them. It’s estimated that roughly 80 percent of all conventional, processed foods sold in the US contain GMOs.

The most common culprits are conventional foods that contain canola, corn, cotton, soy, or sugar, or any derivatives of these. Some common ingredients to look for that are likely to include GMOs include:

• high fructose corn syrup / corn syrup
• corn starch / corn oil / corn meal
• soybean oil / soy protein / soy lecithin / soy protein isolate / textured vegetable protein
• cottonseed oil
• canola oil
• fructose / dextrose / glucose
• aspartame
• xanthan gum
• yeast extract / monosodium glutamate
• vegetable oil
• food colorings
• sugar / brown sugar

(GMOs in New ZealandOwing to strong consumer resistance, no GM crops are grown commercially in New Zealand. GM foods sold in New Zealand must be labeled ‘genetically modified’ if they contain DNA or protein from a GM source or they have altered characteristics compared to their non-GM counterpart such as a changed fatty acid profile – see MfE website)

Sounds radical but good.
Also sounds as if New Zealand is leading the pack with intelligent restrictions, etc.

Lunacy..... sheer lunacy. What do you think evolution is if it isn't "genetic modification"?

Even with modifications that allow super-size crop yields, we can't feed the world's people. How many more would starve if we revert to organic farming for all our food?

Another freakin' eco-religion. Bah!

;-(
.
Skypixieo, as a medical professional I am talking about health science - not eco-religion. You really need to check out some of the studies at the Spilling the Beans site I link to in my article: http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_11361.cfm

These are all studies that should have been done before GMOs were approved by the FDA. There were a total of zilch studies done pre-approval regarding the effect on human health.

European Union governments - and the New Zealand government - are very concerned about the negative health effects. Which is the main reason these countries ban imports of genetically engineered foodstuffs.
By the way, yields for GMO crops are pretty poor in the US, India and other countries where they have been planted extensively. This has been responsible for an epidemic of farmer suicides in India. It turns out they kill yeasts and other micro-organisms that are essential for soil health. I strongly suggest you check out some of the work of Dr Vendana Shiva. As a trained research physicist, she has an even stronger science background than I do.

Soil science has made major advances in the last three decades. Organic farming doesn't increase crop yields but permaculture techniques that preserve soil organisms clearly does. It turns out that mechanical plowing and other industrial farming techniques are virtually "killing" the soils of the industrialized world.

Via permaculture techniques aimed at preserving and enhancing soil yeasts and bacteria essential to plant nutrition, crop yields can be increased ten fold - if you don't believe me check out this BBC documentary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJMgfKqKXwY

PS If you own stock in Monsanto, I suggest you sell it.
Hm, I'm afraid that the direct action we're going to have to take in America real soon is against gangs of local rightwing thugs.
Sounds really ominous, Boko. Please elaborate.
Dr. B,

Again.....
What do you think evolution is if it isn't "genetic modification"?

How much "research" does Mother Nature do before modifying the genetic structure of anything - including us!

With this serious lack of research, how do all you people get to the conclusion that such modifications are harmful?

No.... I don't own stock in Monsanto; nor in any other company whatsoever. I have no ax to grind here. I just detest religion and this sort of alarmist belief is exactly that. Show me the bodies. Show me the harm that has been done to individuals by altered foods. You can post the names of thousands of people who have written alarmist books (for sale) and articles, can you also show me the names of thousands of people who have actually been harmed by modified foods?

This sounds to me like more of the "climate change" type of thing where mankind's involvement went from 3% of the production of CO2 to !00% of the responsibility for global warming in 10 short years of propaganda growth. Ignored is the fact that the globe is, and has for the last 8 years, been COOLING!!

Oh yeah. I know. The warming is happening. The cooling is a "temporary anomaly"........ right!

You have no idea how much harm is done by this unwarranted pseudo-scientific alarmist blather. If nothing else it attracts attention away from serious issues that really DO threaten all life on this planet..... such as the US government!
Skypixieo, there is a massive amount of research into the effect of GMOs on animals - most of it available free if you're really interested in reading it. What I hear you saying is that a certain number of people have to be killed by this untested technology before the US government will follow the example of the European Union (and New Zealand) and appropriately regulate it? You can't really mean this.

Fortunately this opinion isn't widely shared by younger generations, who are inclined to be more proactive in making healthy lifestyle choices. One of the lifestyle choices they wish to make is whether to ingest GMO foods - which is why they are lobbying to have it labeled. They believe they have the right to know what they are eating.

I also think you are a little confused about what evolution is and the type of "genetic modification" we are talking about. We are talking about inserting a fish gene into a strawberry. This is a type of genetic manipulation that could never occur in nature.

We are also talking about inserting genes for antibiotic resistance (as a marker) into every cell of every GMO. I'm not sure if you have ever heard of antibiotic resistance - but this is a major public health problem. When you eat GMOs, that resistance is transferred to your gut bacteria. Which will transfer it to the next superbug that gives you pneumonia.
Dr. B.,
Sorry but I took you for less of a propagandist than you are proving to be, much to my disgust.

Comments like this one by you.....

""I hear you saying is that a certain number of people have to be killed by this untested technology before the US government will follow the example of the European Union (and New Zealand) and appropriately regulate it? You can't really mean this.""

......... are beyond the pale, and you know it perfectly well. You seem to think that such a puerile "straw man" would impress your readers. Perhaps it does but it doesn't do anything as far as I'm concerned except lose you respect. Nowhere did I ever say anything near the words you're trying to put in my mouth. Nor will I answer for them. They are YOUR words - YOU answer for them.....

How is it that on so many blogs you revile the government from top to bottom and then, on an issue such as this, you're demanding that the government jump in and "regulate" things? Have you suddenly developed some respect for "government regulation" in the last few days?

Is there now some government regulatory body that has not been, and cannot be, corrupted by big ag? Do you want to see products having government labels that will be trusted by the citizens? Do you have any confidence that this won't just give people a false sense of security? Do you now wish the government to be trusted with cradle to grave care and protection of the citizens?

If so, you certainly trust politicians a lot more than I do!!
Skypixieo, you're the one who mentioned bodies, not me. If I misinterpreted that sentence "Show me the bodies," you need to clarify what you meant.

Your statement about having no axe to grind, seems pretty disingenuous - as you have used your comments to grind several axes (e.g. climate change and cradle to grave regulation) that have nothing to do with my post.

I have written at least a dozen blogs over the past few years about all the Americans who have died or developed chronic illness due the failure of the FDA, the EPA and the USDA to perform their current regulatory function. This is an area grossly under-reported by the mainstream media - which is why I blog about it.

If you read my post again, you will see that I'm calling for direct action - not demanding a new regulatory agency.
HHmmm I think your onto something here.

first we can start attaching labels to groceries about GMOs then we can attach labels saying that many products are made with planned obsolescence in mind and they're intended to fall apart much faster than they used to; and labels that say this was made in a sweat shop where children are abused and the corporations are putting 1,000 % mark ups on them.

This idea has a lot of potential!

Gotta love it!!

;-)
Zachery, back in the 90s we did a similar campaign to get people to boycott products from South Africa. We researched products that contained ingredients from South Africa and affixed skull and crossbones labels.
