We pick through the tack and tinsel;
no rush
the in-store music is slow and twangy.
We may have to squeeze
past other prospectors
precipitating showers of
imported oven scourers.
A toilet brush, a candy bar,
a plastic encrusted necklace -
all are equals here.
The ladies at the checkout
congratulate us on our choices.
When they take a break,
they fly up to the ceiling
to rearrange helium balloons,
or call out in siren voices
made husky by the smoke of love,
a miasma
that passeth all understanding.
