It Ain't Easy~

Rate: 30 Flag

 Hardtimes Cafe

Seen my reflection in the dirty glass windows
as I walked past those closed country stores
I look about as old as these old brick buildings
it's a shame they shut those wooden doors
I saw a sign that says they selling thrift clothes
old funiture and cheap little kiddie toys
I hope they're still open for the holidays
maybe I can buy a' little something for the boys
If a mighty wind came a' blowin' now
wouldn't be much left of anything here
might as well forget all my worries I guess
and walk on down to the diner for a beer
this place was once was a fancy nightclub
I hear the joint was always jumpin'
they say Ole' Hank played here one time
man that must have really been somethin'
a man used to do a hard day's work
and felt proud when he came home that day
but now they work us twice as hard
and we still get the same damn pay
both sides sell their soul to the Devil
there's no one on the PoorMan's side
I ain't one to complain my man
but you can't fill your stomach eatin' pride
now I guess those days of building a house
and raising a family that does better than you
have gone the way of the dinosaur
now it's all we can do to make-do
this place ain't got nothing for nobody
ain't no use in living here anymore
might as well head out for the big city
least we'll know what we starvin' for
heard there's some jobs in North Dakota
don't matter much what they pay
we gonna do what the BigMan wants
we gonna do what the BigMan say
better be no talk about unions
the middle class already had their say
they all voted for the GOP
and they damn sure got their way
now we're down to two classes
the middle class has up and gone away
the RichMan gettin fat and sassy now
while the PoorMan ain't got a dollar to play

Wow! Powerful, powerful piece. R
A song for our times. Indeed. Well done, Scanman.
Pick up that guitar and start singing. This is good.
Great verse Scanner...your just getting better and better...I think you were having me on when you told me you cannot write.. : )

R.
Yes Jlsathre in Louie Armstrong voice x
You'll do a book of poems, yes? r.
Your so right! No ones on the poor mans side!
Scanner, if this odd hole in the wall OS
has a soul,
it is you..
"both sides sell their soul to the Devil

I ain't one to complain my man
but you can't fill your stomach eatin' pride "

Let the posh writers with their degrees in Litter-ture
clog up the heads of the doomed English Lit students.
Fuck em with their postmodern deconstructionism!
We need plain talk.
For the plain terror we folks face.....
Cut it back a bit and set it to music. You've got a hit!

North Dakota is the place to be if you like extremes. But they are paying the big bucks. It is like the gold rush days there.

Like the idea of a book of poems.
"you can't fill your stomach eatin' pride..." wow that reads like a lyric from Woody Guthry. Great Post Scanner.
Wonderful. That cafe, by the way, is in Minneapolis, in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood near the University of Minnesota.
Mary, this is so cool. I swiped it off of Google Images. Coincidence? I think not, hah~
The fat and sassy Rich Man is over due for a wake up call; and to be cut down to size!!
I was hearing old Woody's voice as I was reading the words.

Scanner what kinda vitamin's are you on, dude?
This has got to be set to music.

R
It sure ain't gettin' easy brotha
you sure nailed it once more.
R♥
Scanner, this is very true and emotional, frightening and hopeful in the same time. Thank you, cause this work gives us truths to think and gravity for our heart, mind and life.

Our times... So sad, so needed, so altering, so true... Rated, with thank you.
I agree- should be a song.
HUGGGGGGGG
A crying word work... Sentimental and hard in the same time. Well done.

Kalimera...
I agree with others - this fit for a melody. Be nice if Bruce S. sang it.
I'm assuming this is a song rather than a poem, just because that's the way it lays out. The lyrics are good, seriously good, I'd say possibly saleable good. If you're going to turn it into a real song, it may take some organizing in terms of verse/chorus or perhaps verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/verse chorus. You're so close on this one, the words are good and remarkably consistent and the meters work, that I think it would be worth the effort.
This would make a great folk song, scanner. Like "Sixteen Tons,": I owe my soul to the company store.
Thanks Kosher. I may give it a go. I'm getting decent on the guitar and I have a Drum machine and a recording device on Windows. What's the worse that can happen. It sells out like my book, hah~
Maybe I will buy the record if I can make enough money in North Dakota.
You have developed so much, scanner. Great work, just GREAT!
I'm no musician, Scanner, but can you sing at all? If Kosh thinks the song is that good, why not put it to music and sing?

Struck a chord. Rated.

[r] a perfect ballad for our time. my job has turned sweatshoppy and oppressive but we all have to shut up and endure it! my dad used to sing that song 16 tons and this brings that to mind. about owing one's soul to the company store, etc. great song and pic, too. best, libby
Scanner, you need to lay down some riffs to go along with this.
If you don't some rich man gonna come and take it away from you.

This is good, Scanner, really good. I have a friend who might be able to help or point you in the right direction on turning this into a song. PM me if you're interested.
Spooky and re-read. Nice one.

"Tread on the keyboard infidel Siamese and rate it before 'they' eat the connection again."
A modern ballad. r
