What is the rationale for charging the poor more than everyone else?
I was dropping off a friend of mine at a car repair place on the other side of town last night when I decided to pick up some McDonald’s chicken mcnuggets on the way home. I’d never stopped at any place in this neighborhood before, but this was one of those… Read full post »
One day soon, I hope Taylor Swift writes a song about me
I was just reading that Taylor Swift appears to be in a relationship with one of the Kennedy kids. Last week, I think she was dating one of the Schwarzeneger kids. The week before that John Mayer was complaining about how her song about him… Read full post »
The Problem with Investing in Imaginary Goods
Today, Zynga’s stock kind of went into a tailspin downwards. Zynga, in case you’re not aware, is famous for building software that used to consist of games you could play specifically on Facebook. Then they went public, making lots of money and continued to try to make games (sometimes in… Read full post »
Media STILL doesn’t understand the difference between a “sex scandal” and “rape”
Lackland Air Force Base is having a bit of a “sex” problem lately. It appears that one of its soldiers allegedly raped young recruits going through training. Now, that’s a real problem, and I sure hope they get to the bottom of this and make steps to keep it from happening… Read full post »
Dealing With Plagiarism in an Academic Environment
The other day, I was grading papers for the Communications course when I came across a paper that was so obviously not the work of the student who turned it in. As a matter of fact, it was completely stolen from an academic journal word for word. Finding the original source… Read full post »
Strangely enough, everyone but me is an expert on diabetes
If you’ve been reading my blog for some time, you know about my whole adventure with being a diabetic. For a number of years, I lived on the edge of the problem by actually going out of my way to change my lifestyle so that what I ate was copacetic with… Read full post »
Civilization V: Gods & Kings Review
The expansion for Civilization V arrived a few weeks ago, and like any Civilization-obsessed geek, I had to go out and buy it. I should put forth a disclaimer right off the start: I was not a major fan of Civilization V when it released. There were a couple of problems… Read full post »
Supreme Court health care decision reveals how clueless mainstream reporters really are
Like a lot of other people, I was waiting on the Supreme Court decision over health care legislation. At the time, I happened to be in the hospital awaiting the decision, but that’s really not a significant factor. However, when CNN, and then Fox News, announced the decision IMMEDIATELY after i… Read full post »
Hospitalization, Changing One’s Ways and How People Still Can’t Communicate
I’ve been debating about writing this topic for a few days now, but I guess enough time has finally passed that it’s possible to at least try to deal with it.
I’m in the hospital today. It’s my fifth day, and the doctors still can’t make a decision on when I… Read full post »
Virgin Mobile’s Iphone Offering Could be a Game Changer
Virgin Mobile announced that it is now going to selling an Iphone with a monthly plan that costs $30. Of course, the buy-in price is $549 for the 8GB Iphone. If you bought a Iphone from AT&T or Verizon, it would cost you only about $99-$199 but you’d have to opt… Read full post »
When did softdrink bottlers begin smuggling out CIA messages to its agents?
This afternoon, I opened up a nice, cool, refreshing bottle of diet Dr Pepper and was about to drink it down when I noticed that there were printed alphanumeric characters under the cap. The actual characters were YR6P4E 7HH4E6. I know that in the olden days, they used to have contests… Read full post »
Presidential requirements (my new proposal)
Recently, Mitt Romney announced he felt a requirement for anyone running for president is that they should have to serve in business for three years before running for the office. Regardless of the self-serving nature of this, I’ve been thinking about this a lot since hearing that.
I’ve… Read full post »
Author’s Guild gains class action status vs. Google but do they really represent all authors?
There’s an interesting case that’s making headlines right now about how Google was attempting to push the Author’s Guild out of the suit to sue Google for its Google Books initiative (where they would be the end all source for practically everyone’s book material with their al… Read full post »

The new cover for my latest novel I’m exclusively publishing on Amazon’s Kindle
I decided to try out an experiment with Amazon, and just publish this novel directly to Amazon instead of trying all of the different e-readers. Here’s the new cover, finished this evening.
There’s an article today on MSNBC, indicating that according to a poll, people generally don’t trust Facebook. The reasons the article comes up with are interesting, but it left me wondering if there’s not something a bit simpler going on in the minds of people who are focusing on t… Read full post »
The Final Season of Chuck (Season 5)
The final season of Chuck released a few weeks ago, and I picked it up on Blu Ray when it did. I finally managed to watch through it, as this was one of my favorite shows when it first aired. The last few seasons of it I kind of missed, mainly… Read full post »
Yahoo CEOs Lying Proves Yet Again That Rules Only Apply to Those of Us Without Power
So, it turns out that the CEO of Yahoo made up information about his college credentials, claiming to have a degree in computer science rather than in something totally unrelated to computer science. In most cases, that wouldn’t be a big deal, but when you’re applying to be the CEO of… Read full post »
The Strange Allure of Jennifer Love Hewitt
A few years ago, I was teaching English in South Korea. Unfortunately, during this time, I had very limited access to American television shows. Sure, I could pirate them, but I’m not the kind of person who does that, so I was limite… Read full post »
Talking About Students Loans Is Pandering; Doing Something About Student Loans Is Progress
The latest appeal to the votes of young people involves the student loan crisis. President Obama has started to “talk” about student loans to show that he’s paying attention to young people issues. Mitt Romney is talking about student loans to show that he’s not overlooking th… Read full post »
Gender Issues at West Point
There’s a story that’s been making the rounds this week from both West Point (the United States Military Academy) and Annapolis (the US Naval Academy) about women who were allegedly raped and then pushed out of their respective academies by a system that wants nothing to do with p… Read full post »
Creating Mythology
One of my all-time passions has been the study of mythology. From the ideas of Joseph Campbell to the attempts of anthropologists to link ancient religion with ancient daily life, I’ve always been fascinated by the manifestations that people put into the study of symbolic metaphor and tying one… Read full post »
Secret Service Agents Fired for Being Cheapskates with Hookers
You know, when it comes down to it, the Secret Service agents who were fired (retired, or whatever) from service were let go because one of them allegedly decided to screw over an escort after she had spent the night in his room for an agreed amount of money that he… Read full post »
Unfortunately, some people just don’t seem to understand sarcasm
I was going to be writing another post today, but I received a screed today from someone who was inflamed by one of my previous postings. She apparently read the title of the piece, went into a critical reading mode and then started scribing her attack before she finished absorbing what… Read full post »
If You Own a Mac, Expect to be Spammed by Companies Who Claim to Fix Viruses
I’ve just started to receive “virus protection” emails from less than legitimate companies that never could sell their business to PC users in the past. I guess they figure that Mac people are stupid because they’ve never had to use virus protection in the past. So, they’… Read full post »
