A Physicist Gets a Lift

Rate: 4 Flag

Brian Cox is smart.  He's really, really smart.  He's so smart...

Alright.  Who's Brian Cox?  He's a scientist who works at CERN, the giant supercollider known for attempts to discover the conditions at the origin of the universe, the Higgs boson, gravity waves, and whole lots of other phenomena.  It's also known as the most expensive broken piece of equipment ever.  It didn't work too well when it was first turned on.  But it's fixed now, and Brian, who got a ride from Carpool on youtube, has a few things to say about it, and God, and refrigerators...

"Why does E=mc2?" is a pretty good read too.
He was also a rock star.
He has a hit show on the BBC on science, space, the cosmos, etc called Wonders of the Universe- beautiful and brilliant. He is also often a guest star on a show called QI (also BBC, informational comedy panel style, hosted by Stephen Fry). You'd probably like both of these shows, it sure makes American scientific/educational tv look as bad as it really is. (For fun, try Manlab with James May, not Brian Cox, but still great stuff).
Here's a good clip, from a recent show:

I watched a pretty cool documentary on netflix awhile back on the particle physicists. a great field.
oryoki bowl - Thanks for the tip. I knew about Brian's series, I'm reading some of his professional work now. I'll check out May's show.

vzn - It's tough to find a good presentation, physicist raconteur doesn't seem to be a category anyone recognizes.
He's funny. And cute. And, oh my God, he looks like the paperboy...!

Thanks for the video! Decent change of pace from the usual political mumbo jumbo. I liked the part about the end of the Blair years though.
