Open Call:What defines you?

Rate: 19 Flag

Last night, I found myself eavesdropping on the job.  I prepare and serve food in a house that holds weekend retreats for the spiritually inclined.  Being the curious zen master that I am, I occasionally find my ear sneaking into discussions, hoping to absorb a tasty thought-morsel.  I was struck by the topic at large last night.  The participants were discussing rather challenging question, namely, "what was it that defined them?"

Struck by the depth of such an idea, I began to apply the question to my own existence.  What defined me?  Was it that I can cook?  That I'm a recovering drunk? Or are people not that easily summed up?

Then I started to think about how I would want to be defined.  If I had to choose one aspect of my being that trumped all others, then what would it be?  I chose humor.

What defines me is my ability to take my own smile and make it yours.

As cheesy as this might sound, I ask you, fellow open salonistas, to take it upon yourselves to think about what defines you.  Maybe even share it if you feel so inclined! I would love to hear about it.

I have been reading and rating, not commenting. But I am enjoying your refreshing take on life. It breathes through your writing. If you are truly this young (as your photo), you have a lot of writing talent on board.
The question, well that I have to think about.
Every day I look in the mirror and ask myself that question. So far, I have come up with 58, 901 things. Live long and prosper and you shall see.
Thanks, Rita! I am really enjoying putting some action into these thoughts that I have. I don't know where it will take me (if anywhere), but I know it's a start! I look forward to reading some of your entries, as well.

Elijah...that is awesome.

You two have made my evening...Thanks.
I too, really enjoy your writing and candid opinions. As for the question: My self-awareness and deep-rooted faith allow me to openly reach out to others, without fear of rejection or failure--we are all only human.
Making others smile or spread joy to them is a wonderful blessing, Ben. This would be a great Open Call, but you should include it in your tags as well as in your title. I'm sure Salonistas and Salonistos would respond to it with their own posts.

What defines me? Nothing and everything. How can a person be simply and succinctly defined by a few words? A single event or notion is impossible since the facets of my mind are individually defined and the definitions change by the instant. Good thought generator. Fusun is right about tagging it as an open call too.
You know, Ben, I ask myself that question often. Stay tuned for my attempt to answer your open call on my blog. Thanks for providing the question; I hadn't thought of anything new to write about today. :D

This is my first visit here and I am impressed. Now give me a day or so and I will try to answer this very intriguing Open Call.
Thank you for this nice question! For me it is The Mary Dictionary. I wrote it myself, beginning in 1972 long before you were born. It is lovely and unusual in that it is not linear.

Example from page 7,011: BEN RUSSELL (noun) A human being in digital form who asked a good question and changed my life in a small, important way.
What a delightful post and what a delightful young man, but I must caution you that you are still way too young to be defined -- and that is a wonderful thing. You have the opportunity to define yourself by the choices you make, while those of us who have made most of our important choices already must be content with what we have become.

One more piece of advice, something I learned from a NA shaman friend of mine: You can know what you do, but you can't know what you do does.

Keep that in mind if (when) ever you start to feel you've lost your way in life. I assure you, I have had the great pleasure of learning later the powerful and wonderful effect of something I did on someone else's life.

The plain truth is we are defined not by what we acquire, but by what we leave behind.
Very interesting... I have an answer that popped up immediately, but it is the one others say about me. The question of how I want to be defined will take more thinking. I'll post when I have more time to comtemplate (hopefully soon).
Your smile and attitude are contagious. Right back atcha! Definitions can be sketchy, subjective and change daily for some. For me, I'd define myself as one who also looks to humor for frequent comic relief from everything else lacking humor. Daily thoughts of gratitude for all that is good in this life, which I find to be far more than words can say (though I have made many feeble attempts here) and my authentic passion for the gifts I gladly accept every waking day: my family (yummy grand babies), wonderful sibs(!), friends, hubby (most days) and my crazy love for nature. My inspiration comes from what I see (very visual being) in the sky, earth, trees, water, mountains, lakes, oceans,, flowers and peoples eyes and smiles. You want to talk cheesy? I could make you give up cheese for the rest of your life!

Thanks for your openness and this worthy open call. Cheers!
People keep getting me and Brad Pitt mixed up, but besides that, I have nothing to define. Nice to meet you my man!
I think this is a wonderful idea for an open call! I think what defines me would be peacemaking and the need to withdraw into myself - sort of two opposing things, I guess, since one implies altruism and the other has more selfish connotations. Wow, writing that out makes me feel even more tortured than usual. Hmm....I should probably add "neurotic" to that description I just gave. Thanks for a very thought-provoking question....
The Zen answer to this question would be "nothing".

Welcome to OS, Grasshopper :-)
Socrates would tell us that answering this question is the heart of wisdom. Probably why I'm not sure I can.
A hard question to look inside and say what you feel defines you. I would say my laugh and my ability to find light in darkness. I love how you define yourself.
I have experienced the absolute highs and lows of life - from winning the girl I loved in highschool to burying 2 or our 4 children.

I have learned what is important and what is not.

I don't think I could write a comment for your question because I have already answered it in this post. This was the first story I wrote a few years ago so you'll please forgive the not so perfect writing.

Ben, you are wise beyond your years.
your self-definition has me sold. how lovely. r
and you got me thinking...
To be honest, God. Close behind that is my love for people, you know? Like I mean, wanting to really KNOW people...and see deeper. Know their struggles and see how it's shaped them and see the beauty in them. If all of that could define me...I suppose that's it. But God is everything I am. I like your posts a lot, by the way.
