Bio
I am a poet-essayist-singer-songwriter, and advocate for the poor, with a teaching and counseling background. I grew up in Florida, now live in Asheville, North Carolina. I also lived in New England 20 years. I love nature, music, and poetry. I am married and we have three adult-kids between us and four grandkids! I am interfaith, leaning toward Taoist, Celtic, and Native American spirituality, and an "Obama Democrat." Currently, I am working on poetry and prose as well as publishing political columns. I am also phone banking nationally for Obama.

Writing, OS, social interaction and motivation

A good meeting at Panera Bread with a couple of folks to discuss political writing.I would like for this group to take off, but if it remains we three that's fine, too.

Doing final editing of my poetry manuscript before sending it off. I am pleased with it, regardless of whether it is accepted or rejected. That is the important thing, to write for the sake of writing and communicating, not for some empty recognition by the "poetry world."

My poetry is not avante-garde enough for a number of the editors, I think. But maybe not all. I strive for clarity and depth. Both.

OS has really been helpful to me as a writer--the feedback and opportunity to read others' writing. The folks I have contact with are interesting and creative. What more could you ask from a blog site.

I don't care about the front page or making money from ads. Since I began on OS in '09, my writing production has been great, a result of blogging every day, for one thing, and the feedback, the latter improving the result.

I am reading a book on introversion. The introvert feels uncomfortable with a lot of interaction but that doesn't mean he doesn't like people. That's me.

Cheers to your poetry book. I hope that you carry on here, because you are in a good space with this place.

A lot of us are in a good space here, even if we gripe a lot and rightfully so. The people make the place and let that stay so!
"The introvert feels uncomfortable with a lot of interaction but that doesn't mean he doesn't like people. That's me."

That's me, too! What is the title of this book? Sounds like something I'd like to read....
Best of luck to you on your poetry book. I'm so blown away by the number of people on OS writing books. I have one in the works but am flatlining on where to go next in my writing. Hats off to those of you that completed the process.
Best luck with your book Patrick.. if you love it, I think others will too. And I am alike in the thinking "' That is the important thing, to write for the sake of writing and communicating, not for some empty recognition by the "poetry world."''

Wonderful to love something enough for its pleasure to be reward enough for doing it. Puts the art in your own hands. Congratulations on your poetry. OS has been very helpful to me too, very supportive of my writing development, and the courage to express myself. I'm in introvert too.
Sending you first, my congratulations. You have created a writing practice that has resulted in a manuscript! Your creativity, self-discipline and resolve is inspiring. And it fills my heart to hear you are pleased with it. Again I think of the painter who reminds me that the journey is always one's best focus when creating art.
Best wishes to you as you continue on the road to publication. Please keep us posted.
I am an introvert, too, Patrick. I so understand. And I, too, would love it if you could share the title of the book you are reading!
Very best wishes to you! R
Congratulations, Patrick. Both on the fortitude it takes to actually launch a book of poems and also the brave spirit with which you launch you child into the land of heathens. May you and it find good reception there. You inspire me to make my way back to poetry which, long story short, has nearly broken my own well-worn MFA heart.
Congratulations on your dedication to and satisfaction with your writing. That IS it, after all. :-)
Good luck with your manuscript. That's quite an accomplishment.
