What is Patriotism? A July Fourth reflection

Rate: 11 Flag

It would be easy to determine who is more of an American Patriot than another if it was about the trappings of Patriotism. By trappings, I mean the flag, the bunting, the jingoisms of Mom, Apple Pie, Chevrolet. The more trappings, the more one is a Patriot.

Perhaps patriotism is about awareness and deeds. It's not about the words and symbols.

Patriotism is about the obligation and commitment to pay taxes.

Patriotism is recognizing the differences in others and appreciating them for the differences. Even if their differences are abhorrent.

Patriotism is about your awareness of those less fortunate than you. And being obligated to help them.

Patriotism is the love of one's country as well as the love of one's community.

What does Patriotism mean to you?

This was piercing and right to the heart. You are so right. Patriotism to me is pointing out the wrongs and trying with everything I have to make them right. As Jon states, he has a good starting line up, liking 1, I also favor 10, 13 and 19.
I agree with Sheila on this one. If you can be aware of all that is wrong but love your country in spite of those wrongs, if you try to do all you can do to right those wrongs and still keep faith that things will get better....with effort. That is Patriotism.
Agree with your assertions. Nice post.
I think of myself as a world citizen. Patriotism is about being a worthwhile member.
This is so true. It astounds me that the way the right has behaved the past 4 years - striking down any and all legislation that might help their constituents because it is more important to prevent political victory than it is to serve the people has not eradicated the word "patriot" from their identities, if only because they wrap themselves in flags and hate.
Jonathan, Sheila, & David have really nailed it. So I will just say I am in complete agreement.
For me it's the promise made 236 years ago of: "...Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" for every American.
Yeah, and everything but the flag is made somewhere other than U.S.A. My contribution is to NOT buy patriotic decorations made elsewhere.
Yup. I also think respecting a variety of opinions, ethnicities, lifestyles, etc. is patriotic. Isn't that the point?
Working to make sure this country lives up to the ideals it was founded upon.
