Now, I've been around a long time and I've always made it a point never to watch the movie, The Great Gatsby. Not because I don't like Robert Redford, I do. It's just whenever I saw a clip of the film, it looked like the most boring movie ever made: Mia and Robert all wispy and white on the lawn etc. Well, it was on cable the other night so I decided to give it 3.5 minutes and if it didn't suck me in I was going to watch a rerun of The Golden Girls.
In Gatsby, beauty and money blind and the only one with sight is the by-stander character who is a witness to it all. The tone and mood dominate this film and as much as you hope all will go well you know it won't. I was sucked in all right. Not just by the story but by the ache of emptiness in all these pretty people's lives....it's the kind of thing you wish you could see on Keeping Up With The Khardashians or The Hills but never do.
The end reminded me of Valley Of The Dolls where the innocent by-stander just wants to go back home and wash the stain of the experience off but you know that's not going to happen either.
This movie was great so I am going to give the novel a try--hope I won't be as disappointed as I was when I loved Forrest Gump, the movie but the novel was so bad, I took it back to the store for a refund.
