You Watched Doritos Ads, MI Was Asked to Vote for a Nerd

Rate: 10 Flag

So there we were, my husband and I, watching the Super Bowl.

Surrounded by a giant bowl of chips and bottles of Bell’s Brown Ale.

Trying to recover from the spectacle that was Roger Daltry and Pete Townshend pretending that they are still virile rock stars.

Hoping for another great commercial with men in their underwear.

Wait!  What’s this?   Is this a joke or is it real?  I don’t think it’s going to turn into a Geico commercial.  They aren’t going to say, “Ha, fooled you!” It really is a political ad.  Rick Snyder, former CEO of Gateway, really wants to be the next Governor of Michigan and he has bought pricey Super Bowl ad time to tell us why.

I have to tell you, this man is cleaver.  This is a funny ad.  Of course, he doesn’t represent my party of choice.  Of course, I cringe at another rich business man buying his way into high office.  But I’ll admit it, I was sucked in by his self-deprecating humor.  Come on, he called himself “one tough nerd”.  I loved that.  I was even intrigued by his 10-point plan that’s “so detailed that’s it likely no politician would understand it.”  I googled him this morning to find out what it is.

I’m no expert on politics but I do know this:  Michigan needs some innovative thinking, some out of the box ideas, to dig itself out of the deep hole we are now living in.  We need a fearless leader.  Is Rick Snyder the guy?  I don’t know.  I have never voted for a Republican and I am wary of his shiny package.  But his first move was a good one and I give him a lot of credit for that.

Pretty good ad - got my attention and I watched the whole thing. But the Dorito's ad was better. :) I hear what you're saying, and somebody has to do something - The thing that I'm starting to wonder about with all candidates is will they have long enough to get done what it is that they really are capable of getting done (does that make sense?) Or are we too desperate as a society to even be able to think in 5-year or 10-year plans ... because I think that's what we have to do.
It's hard to be patient when you've been out of work forever, but however the next governor tries to reinvent our state, it's going to take time and it's going to hurt someone. MI has term limits which I don't think helps the situation any.

FYI: I would have enjoyed the Super Bowl much more if I had a plateful of pretty trefoil cookies in front of me.
What an innovative man...maybe someone to keep an eye on for sure. Thanks for bringing it to the ones of us who didn't even turn on the tv yesterday.

AGREED!!!! I want Jennifer to stay! She has done a wonderful job.

She was left with a horrible mess just as the economy was torpedoed. She's never had a chance to excel.

term limits aren't in our interst or imho legal. how can a majority election be limited to two terms? That limits my freeom of choice when voting.

if sarah can have first dude we should be able to elect jennifer's husband.
Man, I could have written this - right down to thinking it might be a joke, and to catching my liberal self thinking "well, we DO need something here...". Rated for Vulcan mind meld.
I looked at his education plans since I both work for a school district and have two kids in public school. A lot of what he mentions such as tougher graduation standards is already being done. Most of the rest of it is being proposed by others also. His plan also looks like it wants more standardized testing which is already overly plentiful and takes away too much class time not to mention all the overhead needed to compile the data.

I fear he is just another rich businessman trying to buy his way into office similarly to the way Dick DeVos tried 4 years ago.
Enough rich business-men buying their way into public office! That's why New York City seems to be permanently stuck with Bloomberg for Mayor.
I'm with you other Michiganders. Snyder's ad was so unlike any other campaign ad I've ever seen! ("Elect a nerd." That's brilliant!) The state seems pretty savvy about rich white guys running for office (Mr. Amway?), so I'm not initially turned off that he's in that category. That his computer company Gateway shipped jobs overseas might not play well in Michigan, but he did a great job getting on everyone's radar.
Sheila - I'm not a big football fan, but it was actually a great game to watch. It'll be interesting to see how our gov's race develops. I read this morning that Rick is ahead in fundraising, which didn't surprise me in the least.

ws- I think Jennifer has done a respectable job given all she had to work with. I guess I'm ready to see someone new step in and reenergize the state, I feel like she's too tainted to get much accomplished now. That said, I think we should dump the term limits.

Ann - I know! Surprising on all accounts. Happy I wasn't the only liberal sucked in. We'll see what happens once the glow of the Super Bowl ad wears off.

JK- Very true, I think that's why, even this morning, I was feeling open minded about this guy. Haven't had time to dig deep into his 10 point plan yet or his political background, but my reaction to his gutsiness in putting this ad on was very favorable. He did a good job of making himself seems like an approachable, intelligent, innovative human being.
That guy could get elected on sheer refreshingness alone. That doesn't answer any questions as to whether he's the person for the job of course, but that ad now ranks in my favorite political ads, a category which had heretofore lain completely empty.
I missed this commercial. Pretty funny--playing the nerd card.
M - I figure there's some unsavory stuff beneath the glitzy ad. Given I'm not a Republican, I wonder about some of his positions on social issues. Thanks for the update on his education plans.

Eva- It does sound like a familiar story doesn't it? Sometimes it works but in our last governor's election (as referenced by some comments) it didn't.

Maria- I was wondering what you thought. He has more appeal than Devos by a long way. Still, seems too good to be true. I'm sure I can get the scoop on livingstontalk!

Hoop - Never fear, I am not swayed by cleaver ads alone. And as for me running for office...school board? maybe. governor of the state ranked #50 in unemployment? No thanks.

Owl- Exactly, it's a genius ad in my book and very smart to put it on during the Super Bowl when people actually watch the commercials.

Karin - I'm sure it only played in Michigan. It will be interesting to see what his next ad is like, if he'll keep the humor or go for the "time to get down to business" approach.
Doritos. Enough said.
Nacho Cheese? Cool Ranch? Taco?
That is why I am an independent. I vote for the ideas and person not the party. The ad had a little humor, but the soil points were: His state does not need any more career politicians, it needs someone who understand business and how business creates jobs not government. Michigan needs jobs, bring the jobs and all the other problems become workable. If people are working, they pay taxes for services, they buy property, food and other goods. This creates more jobs. More schools, more hospitals, more prosperity spread across a larger group of the population.

Fact is either a rich person will be governor or a person backed by rich people. The later will be beholden to some nameless group of rich people. The first may just feel like changing their world because they don't need the money or power. Sure some may do it for the ego, but not all.

If I lived in Michigan I would check out his plan, if it makes sense forget his party and vote for the person. That is what free thinking, intelligent people do when participating in our free political system.
Very good points M Todd...and I hope that I am open minded enough to listen to what he has to say.
Sorry for the typo. Solid points not soil. It took me a long time to get out of the habit of voting party. What helped me was understand that both parties with their career politicians do the same thing.

Who knows if more people would not be beholden to a particular party some strong third party candidates would run. People who have ideas and a desire to see change in this country not maintain the status quo and power structure in place now.
