When Barack Obama was in the early days of his run for the presidency, I was studying about archetypes in a graduate program in Depth Psychology. Unable to complete the degree, I was, however, inspired to write about and apply these ideas to the politics and culture of that time. I found the Hero's Journey particularly compelling and so I wrote this piece on Obama who to me epitomized the modern day hero.
These days Obama's star may have fallen a bit, but I maintain there is much of this archetype that remains true. We must wait and see if and how he achieves the final summit.
He may have already passed through the darkest hour. Or, it may lay in wait ahead of him. But whether or not he succumbs to or defeats the dark and gathering forces, I maintain a great and enduring hope for this hero’s victory.
