I don’t have a problem with breastfeeding whatsoever. I’m curious now, though. What makes it front page news?0

While I don’t believe there should be laws regulating women’s breasts, does that mean it’s in good taste to have this on the cover of Time, or that it is or isn’t harmful to the child? No. This is morally repugnant, and almost certainly harmful to the child – anyone with common sense can figure out how breast feeding a child into their formative years can ill-prepare someone from living in modern society.

I’m always amazed when people are “shocked” at an attention-getting magazine cover. The entire point of a magazine cover or a movie trailer or a newspaper headline or a blog post title is to GRAB ATTENTION. Not to be 100% factually correct, not to be appealing to everyone, but to act as bait for what’s coming next (the article, the show, etc.). If yours doesn’t, what’s the point? Time magazine isn’t doing it “wrong,” the problem is 98% of magazines aren’t doing it *right*.0

Of course, there are ways to be attention-getting without engaging in what some would argue is child pornography.

That Time Magazine breastfeeding cover is just obscene. That kid is way too chubby to have such a hot mom! Gross!0

All I can deduce from the Time cover is that breastfeeding makes you HOT, WHITE, SKINNY and BLONDE. Where’s my 4 year old?0

That the first thing most people seem to think of is the sexuality of the situation is simultaneously an indication of an effed up society, and that in some places, this Time Magazine cover is indeed child pornography.

Child pornography is judged by something known as the COPINE scale. According to those definitions, the cover of Time Magazine falls under definitions three (and arguably definition four, if the text of the magazine cover is removed from the image). Level four is where most criminal courts start enforcing prison sentences.

To bring home the point – I don’t believe that breastfeeding past a certain age is the most important issue of the day, nor should it be a regulated area of life. I do believe that common sense would indicate that in modern society, breastfeeding a child well into the age where they’re able to remember it is going to be detrimental in the long run. For better or worse, we’re living in an over-sexed society. and in the west, female breasts are associated with sexuality.Co-mingling early childhood development with teenage sexual societal conditioning is a recipe for some very sexually confused adults.
