Why hasn't there ever been a gay Star Trek character?

I don't blame Gene Roddenberry. He was busy hooking up Ohuru, Sulu (Takei's real life gender identity didn't make it so in the Federation, though that fencing scene was pretty gay), Chekov, and whatever other racial stereotypes from the original cast I'm not remembering.

But, for those who followed in Roddenberry's legacy, why not have a Poopshoot Ponfar? Isn't the Star Trek world supposed to be some egalitarian utopia? There aren't any gay people in this money-less, racially diverse, gender neutral fantasy land?

Were they are "cured" by Bones? What the hell?
