What friendship is to me

Rate: 8 Flag

March 17, 1982 my husband Steve gave me a book of poems called Poems that touch the heart. He never has had any interest in poetry. His interests lie in black holes, science of any type, and garage woodworking. So I thought it very sweet that he got me a present he knew absolutely nothing about.

Well, I love this book and read it so much more often than I thought I would. I always find a new treasure for some situation that comes up in my life. I particularly, have always loved this poem.

Friendship

Oh, the comfort-the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person,

Having to neither to weigh thoughts,

Nor measure words-but pouring them

All right out-just as they are-

Chaff and grain together-

Certain that a faithful hand will

Take and sift them-

Keep what is worth keeping-

And with the breath of kindness

Blow the rest away.

He sounds like a keeper~Great poem~
That is a great poem and a good definition for a friend.
Scanner, I am not that great at making friends so I think on this poem and yes I am glad to have Steve, being he is my best friend. Being a server(waitress) for so many yrs. you really only know people for a few seconds here and there. I know now because of the work I did for 30 some yrs, that this job was not a make friends job really. Well, it paid the bills and now gives me time to make friends now.
Wonderful poem
Thank you sharing
~R~
Phyllis, I have always loved it because that would be an ideal friend..I think it is basically saying to be genuine. We aren't all perfect. Glad you like.
MCS. See, now that is the kind of cyber friend you seem like. :) Glad you like it.
A very nice poem. R
A friend and I recently had a falling out because there was a sujbect i wanted to make off limits, she balked, I huffed, and her husband sent her over and we cried. Now I'm going to send her a copy of this poem!

Here's to smart husbands!
So true. I remember hearing somewhere that if your friend/lover/ sister whomever is human: they will fail you. Overlooking the bad spots is the key. I feel loved best when someone loves me despite.
Nice post Cindy.
Excellent poem, Cindy, and your husband sounds pretty excellent too!
Thoth, it has been a fave of mine for a long time, never found another as telling.
Kate, good that you are so forgiving, in that you may give her the poem, you might get lucky and she will 'get' it!
Rita, love the last line of your comment. When I was young I liked to tell everything that I felt, was bad about me to people, to make sure they would like me anyway. Sort of the same idea. (I had horrid self-esteem issues.) That was then. :)
Erica, I married well. lol.
