If I want to get to heaven

I have to walk away from hell

My favorite song OC, it's ridiculously romantic

Rate: 16 Flag

"Whatever colors you have in your mind

I'll show them to you and you'll see them shine."

Wow. The first time I heard those incredible two lines decades ago, I fell in love with Lay Lady Lay. The way Bob Dylan sings, the music, everything about it touches me. Couldn't find one with a video, just the music. The video will probably be gone by tomorrow, I find the song and it's taken away. Enjoy it while it it's here.

Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Whatever colors you have in your mind
I'll show them to you and you'll see them shine.

Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile
Until the break of day, let me see you make him smile
His clothes are dirty but his hands are clean
And you're the best thing that he's ever seen.

Stay, lady, stay, stay with your man awhile
Why wait any longer for the world to begin
You can have your cake and eat it too
Why wait any longer for the one you love
When he's standing in front of you.

Lay, lady, lay, lay across my big brass bed
Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still ahead
I long to see you in the morning light
I long to reach for you in the night
Stay, lady, stay, stay while the night is still ahead.

It's lovely to think about the beautiful pictures in my mind, I'm grateful for the OC. I was tired of looking at the last post. Time to put that memory away.

L,I have heard this one..!!Beautiful...only didn't know the title..I am hearing it now..and I will try to ρut bad memories behind too.Thank you for the motive.Best regards and rated with wishes.
Oh Gee Whiz...I love that song!!!! I was just at a site in Second Life where a man was live streaming his music onto a stage. He sounded very much like Dylan and I requested this song. He sang it so beautifully and I danced with my long avatar hair blowing in the wind ans I twirled among the flowers with the other flower children on that site. Ill put up a post about it for you. Love that song. thanks
I used to laugh at this when I was younger, no more, I love his deep tones on this one. Thanks for this Bleue..
One of his best... My favorite Dylan song are "Just Like Tom Thumb Blues," and "Bob Dylan's Dream"
Wow this takes me back
When this first came out I didn’t pay much attention silly child I was; now it speaks to me on so many different levels.
Thanks for bringing me back to the good old days and also for adding me.
~R~
Achingly romantic! Good choice.
Stathi, you seem very gently and sensitive, it's nice to have you here. I hope we can all put bad memories behind us and see only the beautiful colors shine. Thank you for the open call.

zanelle, oh thank you, I do love your second life blog!. Wouldn't it be lovely if we were free to create all the beauty we wanted. What would the world look like if we could all make what's in our minds shine? Maybe it would be too beautiful.
rita, if only it could be so simple. Life is so fuckin' hard (hahaha!). So we have music about dreams kept in our heads.

Jane, thanks. Nothing like a sweet old song.

jmac, the man knew what he was doing, I suppose he just wrote from the heart.

M.C.S., the simplest things get to the heart of all matters don't they?

V. Corso, achingly is good choice of word.
Ah yes, one of Dylan's only seriously romantic songs. Excellent choice Bleue, and I'm liking this open call so much I'm gonna play too, though in a comment rather than in my own post - what can I say, I got no respect for authority. ;-)

I have heard this before, Bleue ... but I'm really hearing it for the first time now. I think I might just be playing it over a few more times tonight too while I make my dinner ...

Thanks, Bleue. Have a wonderful night ... put on some music and dance! I will be!
[r] I remember having a first date long long ago sing that to me and others with his guitar at a party and I absolutely melted. I did not inspire him to melt for me as it turned out. But I remember, even fondly, the song and the moment it was so powerful. :)
Fine choice l'Heure though I'm not sure it's even my fave Dylan song. It's also a special favorite of a very close friend of mine.
Romantic and sweet Blue.

Yes, this brings back the good.
Let us all get away from bad vibes this time...
Never went for conventional songs. It took me years to find the song that best represents what I feel:

For it's going to be The Future Soon
I won't always be this way
When the things that make me weak and strange
Get engineered away

It's going to be the Future Soon
Never seen it quite so clear
And when my heart is breaking
I can close my eyes, and it's already here.

(Jonathan Coulton, "The Future Soon")
I loved this song too Bleue..
Thanks for posting.
nana, a beautiful song, very mournful. Stathi is generous and I have authority here so I authorize that URL.

Kate, I'm glad you're enjoying it, sadly the mystical powers that be will come take it away.

Libby, I would have melted completely. Fortunately men liked fast banging sounds otherwise the pregnancy rate would have skyrocketed! Heavy metal is good birth control.
love the Mazzy Star Nana..
Oh, gosh, your avatar is beautiful! The pink is alive!!! I'm glad you and others like this song--not mu cup of tea at all. Just hearing it makes me groan in that it reminds me of Three Times a Lady. I'm a quirky, greedy so-and-so. I like that you like it.
Abrawang, that's okay we get to have different likes. I'm not a huge Bob Dylan fan so it even's out ;~)

Mission, Sweet was what I needed, everything is too glum.

neutron, just went and checked out the vid and it's fabulous! The future is already here, y'all are running the show. Even if it's not, you be you, you be all of you!

Linda, it's a lovely song. HUGGGGGGGGG

rita, you have good taste, nana introduced me to Mazzy Star and it's fabulous but that song is too sad for today. (oopsie about the inside joke, I have a potty mouth and failed to use my inside my head voice, sigh)

Good Daughter, thank you! That's Pinkie my original avatar, she feels safe and comforting when I'm scared or sad. Oh, I'm so glad you didn't listen to a song you don't like, I dislike making friends groan in misery. Be quirky but don't be taking my share of the good stuff...
dylan's best voice, of his many thousands....
the "colors of your mind" quote you have covered...
no greater gift to a person than
to show them the infinite worth of their imagination...the colors...
make them shine...

also i love the clothes are dirty, hands clean thing...
morally & also usually physically true...
but these days?
to be unclean in yr clothes, yr body, etc
is a cardinal sin.

he is the only person, dylan is, who would dare say this:
you can have yr cake & eat it too!
James, your comment says it exactly. The song is simple but incredibly profound.

So few care what beauty is in our minds. We must present our pretty faces and appropriately similar ideas. Nothing shines, the dull sameness everywhere. It is no gift at all to be unseen, those lines made me ache inside for something more.

Dylan was insightful but the simple words there hid it well. What good is it to me if the exterior is shiny but what touches me is rotten? Haha, the song and thoughts are terribly outdated.

That he was so daring is the sad part. Of course we can have our cake and eat it too. Sadly, not everyone wants to eat cake first.
I never noticed this song much...but now, I'll never forget it. Thank you.
I've been away (should still be!). If your avatar means you are sad and afraid, I'm there with you.
Maureen, it's pretty old and wasn't one of his huge hits but as a romantic teen I loved it. It had a lot of subtle meanings, glad you liked it.

Good Daughter, sad is normal when sad things happen and my dad died without us ever having a relationship, I'm healing. Afraid is a lifelong state for me, things are just more uncertain than usual lately. My goal is not to become withdrawn, having friends helps. Thank you much.
I've never heard this one before ~ there is something special about it...and his "every man's" voice is his strength....thanks for this~
Heidi, you put it well, it was every man's voice. Love the new songs but this has remained my favorite for decades.
