No good-bye? The site has changed dramatically. I know they've been losing money, so I'm surprised it's still up. I missed a few weeks, but something must have happened. My request has been to get rid of the bloody sport spammers. I'm conviced their only purpose is to take control and scare off participants.

@Ben Sen: Someone just shared with me earlier today that OS staff condones the spam, and even supports it. Apparently, a "smoking gun" sort of post or mention somewhere was found. I'm still investigating.

Emily's pregnancy is just a rumor. I think Tink and I started it, as well as one about her being in rehab. (Doesn't mean it's not true.) There's also a rumor she's gone back to grad school. We didn't start that one.

Should we start a pool about how long Mr. Sugarman lasts? Or even better, how long before he actually communicates with us?

Guys, it must be obvious that what the posters here want doesn't matter to Salon management. They have always hand-picked posts from Open Salon to put on Real Salon - with no payment, of course - and now they have a large bunch of people who are no longer arguing about getting Editor Golden Stars or whatever they're called.

I'm an Open Salon member of 3 years and just found out that you are the new editor. As you may be observing on the OS site, there is a lot of confusion, consternation and bewilderment about what is going on with the site and what it's future may be, especially in light of the rumors of the demise of Salon. (Hopefully those rumors will be like Mark Twain when he said "rumors of my death are greatly exagerrated").
Members of OS could certainly benefit from some open communication and open reassurance (if reassurance can be legitimately provided). Plus, if you're unaware, probably the single greatest problem OS members have is with preponderence of spam which has literally taken over the site most days and which greatly interferes with OS serving as the community which it was designed to be and which up until a year or so ago, it was.
Anyway, I don't know if anyone else OS has communicated with you--or tried to--in a reasonable and rational way. I'd be interested in your feedback, observations and insights into what the plans are.

I'm all ears. They got rid of the "merchant" spammers, and I'd say the troll count isn't as bad as it was. My guess was the live feed spammers have them beaten technologically. (I've been here since the very beginning.) Sagemerlin says they bring the site viewers, but not if you look at their numbers as posted. It's simply bad management, or that Emily hasn't been doing her job for a long time. I'll be interested in what you find.

Last year at this time, Jacob Sugarman was an Editorial Fellow on Big Salon, which means he was an intern, presumably unpaid. (I mean, does anyone offer paid internships anymore?)

After a few weeks on OS, he'll probably be beggging to go back to his former status. :-)

Jeanette: Emily was also an intern before being hired as OS Editor.

I don't care who's editor, though I think Emily grew fond of us in her own way. Of course, a rowdy band of demented people can sometimes elicit a sympathy response from the most uptight.
