Bio
“I’ve discovered the secret of life,” Kay Thompson, the eccentric entertainer and “Eloise” author, once said. “A lot of hard work, a lot of sense of humor, a lot of joy and a lot of tra-la-la!”
And that's been my life: As a travel writer for over 30 years, I've been around the block (more like around the world), and I write true stories about interesting people and places. (Check out my travel site, Travels With Lea.)
I've lived an unconventional life in conventional trappings. Been a corporate VP, worked with foster kids, acted in an Indie ("Nurse 1"), was on Jeopardy!.
I've been managing editor of a travel publication, written for the Times, and authored books. OS is my home, but I also blog on The Huffington Post, and I've contributed (mostly anonymously) to everything from encyclopedias to guidebooks.
Married young, divorced late; married late, widowed early, I dated lots in-between -- and survived a scary illness. After being happily, peacefully solo for many years, I'm now happily married again.
I founded and still edit www.sololady.com, a lifestyle Website for single women. I'm truly grateful for each precious day, each well-earned wrinkle, my family, my cat. Truth, laughter, friendship, late love. And this blog -- on this wonderful site!
It sure feel like that's what's in store. I doubt I'll live long enough to see the worst of it but imagine how the folks who do will look back on the decision-makers and their supporters who did nothing but misinform in the face of obvious and widespread scientific warnings.
I think it's kind of odd, we have had cyclical feast and famine for all of history, and then some longer cycles of deluge and drought, but overall, happening at least once in a lifetime. And we keep forgetting to stock up during the feast years instead of eating out the larder. Thank goodness politicians really understand their bible stories, and have focused on good legislation to make sure we never suffer again. :)
Maybe not, but perhaps Mr. Obama should drive home the point that global warming DOES exist, despite what Rush Limbaugh says. Not a sexy campaign talking point, perhaps, but it's pretty undeniable now except to the religious Right.
This has been predicted for years and now it's here and coming even more. People need to wake up and soon or the future will be much, much worse. More than we can imagine.
the earth has gone through cyclic climate change since it solidified into a planet with water on it, but the *rate* of change toward warming is dramatic now and absolutely attributable to human population and resulting carbon increase and the greenhouse effect. jeff howe's right: areas that were previously cold will warm and may become food-producing. the question is whether there will be enough of them to support the world's increasing population and, even perhaps more important, whether there will be enough potable water. i foresee dramatic population movements and maybe substantial die-off. from a cold scientific perspective, something has to reduce the overpopulation of the planet. my darwinian self sees this as a more-stark-than-usual example of the survival of the fittest, with humans continuing to live on a very, very changed earth. and you're right, lea, we won't be around to see what happens.
geez...and we in Texas are having a inslought of rain. It's like Seattle. Around 2 to 3 in the afternoon the thunder starts and by five it's soaked.
Unusual for Texas. We are usually suffering from drought while the rest of the nation floods.
The worst part about this is our tarmack highways get so blistering hot at high noon it takes the little rubber thingy right off your high heels as they dig in. When the rain hits it's like a sauna and when it stops, if it is during the early afternoon hours it is WORSE outside then before the rain.

Not really. It's quite green despite. We get rain from time to time and I bathed the dog outside last week. I only water the veggies and flowers.
And yet it seems like we all react by cranking the a/c which just makes conditions worse. I can't live in these temps without it.
:)
