Bio
“I’ve discovered the secret of life,” Kay Thompson, the eccentric entertainer and “Eloise” author, once said. “A lot of hard work, a lot of sense of humor, a lot of joy and a lot of tra-la-la!” And that's been my life: As a travel writer for over 30 years, I've been around the block (more like around the world), and I write true stories about interesting people and places. (Check out my travel site, Travels With Lea.) I've lived an unconventional life in conventional trappings. Been a corporate VP, worked with foster kids, acted in an Indie ("Nurse 1"), was on Jeopardy!. I've been managing editor of a travel publication, written for the Times, and authored books. OS is my home, but I also blog on The Huffington Post, and I've contributed (mostly anonymously) to everything from encyclopedias to guidebooks. Married young, divorced late; married late, widowed early, I dated lots in-between -- and survived a scary illness. After being happily, peacefully solo for many years, I'm now happily married again. I founded and still edit www.sololady.com, a lifestyle Website for single women. I'm truly grateful for each precious day, each well-earned wrinkle, my family, my cat. Truth, laughter, friendship, late love. And this blog -- on this wonderful site!

Joan Walsh, Where Are You? We Miss You!

where_are_you__by_jajoo

You used to come by OS and play with us. You used to comment. You used to post. But the last time you wrote a post was on Dec 19, 2009 -- “Me on Open Salon?”

You wrote, in part:

“I read, I rate and I comment on Open Salon. I don't write as often as I think about writing. But I love it here, and many of you know that. I must also say: I don't check my inbox here as often as I should…. I have to be honest: I am drowning in email at work, I'm on Twitter and Facebook and Gmail as well as Salon, and of course I'm here too. I fall behind on everything.”

OK, so you’re falling behind. Last I checked you have 2,885 Facebook friends (I don’t even have 285) and you have thousands more followers on Twitter.

And yes, we’re proud you’re a regular on cable TV—we’ve seen you all over the place lately, even on "Morning Joe" -- with Nora! And you’re tweeting and social networking and appearing on more and more split screens. You must be tired of debating Pat Buchanan.

But Joan, not even a teensy-weensy comment over here on your own baby, Open Salon, every couple of weeks or so? Why oh why?

Maybe you flounced and I missed it.

What a thrill it used to be to get a Joan Walsh comment. On my fourth post ever you wrote one of the seven sparse comments I received. That encouragement kept me going.

Oh the memories. Remember when Lonnie photo-shopped Aretha’s inaugural hat on your avatar and we had the spring hat contest?

Remember when we had your back with Dick Armey and Bill O’Reilly? We helped you. You were in a safe place. Some of us even wrote posts about it.

And you used to post here regularly, Joan. You wrote about your daughter Nora and about Sadie, your labradoodle. And you asked us to suggest books to read on your ‘semi-vacation.

We were all so close. We were your BFF of websites.

Maybe it was something we did. Do we sometimes seem like a lunch table of Heathers in the high school cafeteria? Is it the larger pool of OSers and reading posts from newbies with the same complaints of former newbies of six months ago, and six months before that?

Has it gotten old? Is it the weekly dustups? Have your faves left? Are you -- ahem, too famous to stop by now and then?

Or maybe like so many of us here you feel dissed that you didn’t get more EPs and covers.  Hmm. They were starting to come few and far between for you, I noticed. The editor must have been encouraging you in the beginning and then, just like us, you were left to your own devices.

You could have blogwhored since just about all of us have you as a favorite. Come to think of it, looking at your blogpage, you haven't added a favorite since our dear, departed Dakini Dancer.

Maybe you’re writing under another name – are you really "big fat trauma queen"? Please let us know. Multiple personas are popping up all over and you may be two of them.

Oh Joan, I’m hoping you're lurking and you read this, just to know we care. And that you comment, just so we know you’re still here, and still like us enough to come and play. In fact, a Joan Walsh comment even on someone else’s post would make me feel a whole lot better about OS, and life in general.

And it’s spring.  Isn’t it time for another hat?

Come back, come back, wherever you are!
Someone was here posting as Joan on Joan's blog on April 1st, several posts, and they all disappeared next day. It was quite the run while it lasted, very funny. Either Chinese teenagers hacking, or. . .I hate to think about the or.
Okay missy, this is really scary. I actually went to Joan's page earlier this morning to see when she made her last comment (in March) because I was thinking she hasn't been around at all. And yes. She is definitely due for a new hat. Doesn't it seem like longer than a year ago...? xoxo
Yes! Did I come too late to the party? I started lurking around the time she left. It WASN'T ME! I swear. I'm very nice. I behave. I rate. I comment. I post. I send PMs but they are nice too. It WASN'T ME!!
I swear I haven't been here. I was looking about the blog-O-sphere. I am playing with a high speed commuter. It's so much fun to view You Tube.
Joan washing up for a TV appearance?
She may be on` Lawrence Welk Show?
Lea Lane.
Ya may create a big mess of `Deletes?
Joan Walsh walks her daughter's dog?
Please let Joan Walsh nap. She quits?
Joan wakes up Mr. Oscar`de grouch?
Ms. Walsh may not get another E.P.?
She may come back cranky as`skunk.
Is it something we said? Did somebody say Dick Armey is a really good guy? What can it be?
I had one thought, she is in an undisclosed location with Dick Cheney and she is torturing him by forcing him to listen to Jimmy Carter speeches.
But Joan is tortured enough having to debate Cheney's daughter! I doubt she'd want anything more to do with him.

Maybe Art is right and she is on the Lawrence Welk show or Sesame Street. Or maybe she is just "cranky as a skunk" with us for many reasons.
Thanks Lea, I think Joan will come around now. It is always a treat when she leaves a comment.
this is a good funny, gentle nudge.....
A little nudge may do it. We'll see....
If not a new hat, how about a new hair color?! Joan would be hot as a blonde and oh so sultry as an auburn haired lass! Yeah, let's mess with her hair. No hat!

Joan knows I am a big teaser and silly girl, hopefully! Can only imagine her role here has taken on more hats to wear and she is going in so many directions, as you indicated. This is one smart, busy woman and she has her baby to occupy much time. I like to imagine that Joan and her precious pup are taking long walks along the marina and that both she and he are frolicking in the water, tossing and retrieving sticks, looking out over the Golden Gate, waiting for the waves.

Joan - wherever you are...hope you are very well and loving what you are doing. Know that you are thought of, missed and loved by so many!

Time for another SF meet-up??? xoxo
Cathy, I remember well reading about your SF reunion with Joan. Maybe you can coax her to come back even once and awhile. It was so nice having her around.
I think we should ask Chris Matthews about this.
You are not going to believe this but I was thinking these exact thoughts yesterday, well maybe not exact, but I was thinking about her, too.
It could be the work of Freaky Troll!
R
I loved it when brainy, tough Joan could come over here and be silly.
Oi, what a lament! Maybe we should do a petition! Rated.
She posted this comment the other day on the new ladies post , Eillen Dover, I think!

Eileen, thanks for your thoughts, I hope you stick around!

When last seen, Joan was visiting Chris Matthews and left to dangle in mid-air while Chris rambled on in a lengthy exchange with an idiot. I actually felt sorry for Joan who must have had all of thirty seconds to try to bring a little reason to the debate. Memo to Matthews -- get over yourself, you're turning into Lou Dobbs.
She and Chris M. have run off to Haiti ? Wait Tahiti ?
Maybe she's got one of those exclusive agreements now that forbid her from slumming in low-rent open forums.

I hope not because I always though we were HER low-rent open forum.
I've never had the honor of a Joan comment, but I was also wondering about her this week, as the 2nd OS anniversary passed without a peep about an SF gathering to celebrate it as we did last year on the 1st anniversary. That was sad.
Am I the only one who saw "Joan Walsh" posting on April Fools? Somehow I doubt it. It was her, or it wasn't, but it was funny stuff.
The wifi is down in our cabin in the poconos. I am at a coffee bar picking up rehydrating fluids to bring back to the little mynx.
Scanner, was that the real Joan or the April Fool Joan?
I haven't missed her since I've never been one of the lucky ones to get a comment from her! :)
Patricia, it wasn't just the comments, it was the FUN. She was really into the fun things.
Lea, I also miss seeing Joan here and I hope she'll start posting again soon!
Lea, according to her comments list Joan has made 5 comments since January 1st, the latest on April 10. It looks to me like she is just swamped and trying to juggle too many balls in the air at one time. We all fall into that trap at times.

I do remember the several comments I got from her early on, and several nice PMs she sent me in 2008 and 2009, also, some comments on some threads I started on Facebook this winter.

It was really good, as you say, to see her commenting and playing on Freaky's posts and elsewhere, light hearted and silly and very, very normal, relaxed; and now and then nibbling around the edges of issues that we thought at the time were vital to OS, bringing both good will and common sense to the dust up of the week.

I just think that those days are over, at least for a while. I hope that she knows that we are her sanctuary, friends who have her back, and a place where she can find some comfort from all the whirling chaos that she finds herself in now.

One of the prices of fame is forgetting where you have been, who your friends were. But the good ones remember, and Joan is a good one, so hopefully she will be back more often.

Time, as always, will tell.

Monte
Monte, thanks for the info. It always seemed this was a refuge for her, where she could let down her hair and rant a bit and test ideas and get support. It added so much meaning to being a part of OS, and when I used to see her on TV I felt she was a real friend, not a virtual one. I hope she still feels she has a special place here.
Hmm, haven't seen Freaky around lately either. Or... Zerry. Oh no, maybe the Tea Baggers have them!?!?
Great idea for a post Lea! Fair and balanced too ;-)
Maybe if she and Freaky got back together and the wedding was on again, maybe Joan would return. If only we knew what the real issues were that drove them apart, maybe then we could come up with some way to bring them back together!
Lea ~ what a nice invitation ... how can she resist?
Let me offer another view here -

Blogging, when it's not your paying job, is a lot like reading a book, getting a cup of coffee in a cafe, or writing a diary. You do it when the spirit strikes you. Sometimes that may not happen for months, years. As soon as it becomes a social obligation, blogging becomes a lot less fun.

So don't take it personally. Joan is living her incredibly busy life, and, from what I see in the media, she's doing it rather splendidly.
But Paul, we had her back. We were a special group! She played here!
She's on Twitter all the time, Lea. Have you tried looking for her there? @joanwalsh
Thanks, Kathy. But not the same. For just awhile, this was a playground, with costumes, and games and heart to hearts. It was a group dynamic, kind of sweet, and it didn't last.
No, I mean have you tried contacting her there to ask her if she'll come back over here? It's the fastest way to find her, I think.
Oh, sorry. I just started tweeting and that's a good idea. Thanks. (But I wish she didn't need coaxing.)
Lea, I fear those magic beta days are a memory now. We know success separates us all, as professional priorities supersede personal time. But I miss her too.
Wow, I got in! Lea, I just tried to post on Drewonimo's blog today and failed; then tried to post here, and clicking on Post a comment just threw me back to the top of the blog. Whew!

I do post occasionally, I lurk regularly. In terms of blogging again...it's hard to get re-started. But I'll try to come up with something. I am still reading! Thank you for this, it's so sweet.
I swear I jusy goy Home from a wild day speaking with cops, Security guards, and Crisis Intervention taser folk. Nice? Oops!
I my, O Gads. This makes me as happy as sitting in West Virginia `

@ a Gentleman Club. But, of course, without the strobe lights, and pole dances.
What's happening tonight?
I recall a term "pot vagrant."
It is a fanny expression for:`
A Old Time Public Drunker.
It means a "draught"comes.
Yea! Hi! A old drunk Uncle!
In this case it is`Jan Walsh!
What a relief! Life is goods!
Goodness.
If I had a roll of dimes I's slip?
Slip a dime in a girdle or tutu?
You know? Old Lauren Walsh?
A old returning elk in a gown?
A return to the past Sr. Prom?
I am sure things aren't so bad!
Yea Lea Lane hauls Joan back!
Lea Lane will never get a E.P.!
O, a silly banter. Welcome Hi!
Look Lea, you did it!

It's almost tulip festival time in Holland, Lea. I think you should pack your bag and come for another visit so we can meet in person.
Joan came back! She commented. She's still here. Yeah
I still think Freaky and Joan are the one in the same, ever seen them in the same room??

Nope!!

Wait, for that matter, ever seen Tink and Joan in the same room?

Yep, except Joan had her security team along with her lawyers and restraining order.

Stupid restraining order. Piddle on one(okay, maybe it was more like a hundred times) person's roses. PFFFFFFFFFFFFFTTTTTT!!

:)
Oh yeah, and Joan, sometimes, the comment thing does that, the jumping and the erroring out, and disallowing comment posting, I thought I was the only one on the Comment Blacklist ---- :)
Sometimes there just aren't enough hours in the day to do everything you want.
She's on the Ed Show trading barbs with Pat Buchanan. R
Sorry to disappoint you, Lea, but this is NOT Joan. Click on "Joan's" name and look at the url on the top. This shit has got to stop.
Thanks, P. At least she did comment once; I did check on her blog. I will erase my comment and learn another lesson.
LEA! YOU DID IT! MAZAL TOV!
I bet Joan has no idea I wagered her paycheck on the outcome of Dancing With The Stars. Boy, she's gonna be one surprised lady.
She was hanging out with that conservative, Joe Scarborough this morning. At least Mika was there.
Yes, I saw her there Michael. No more split screen. She, Tina Brown and Arianna are the blogosphere babes with brains. (And you do know that she commented above --the real Joan.
Lea, excellent points! I was thinking the same thing. Our team leaders seem to have left us behind, like unwanted playthings. I remember those good, old times too! The hat...who could forget the hat?
Maybe we could all photoshop hats, in a kind of support movement. I think she needs some fun here. It's been too mean.
Um--we're doing fine without her, aren't we? We're grown ups now--we can babysit ourselves!
She just added to the fun. She didn't babysit. She got down into it.
Thank you post it at first . this is a good and great story.he is my example model.by the way lea ,do you interest in shopping ?do you have any good experience with shopping online,i love shopping ,and i love replica handbags how about you ?
