iPhone to get iTunes TV and Movies!

In a long awaited move (at least by me), it appears that Apple will begin to allow downloads of movies and tv shows through the iPhone. This revelation, (again at least to me) comes by way of an advertisement in the new ad supported version of the app Twitterfon released on 5/15/09. Three ads, stumbled upon by a geeky friend of mine who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of the powerful arms of the Apple legal department, scrolling across the top of the app were for ‘iTunes Movies’, ‘iTunes TV’ and ‘iTunes Movie Rentals’.

While the titles of soon to be available movies and TV shows were listed and directories broken down by genre are active...

the links to the actual movies turned up a message of "The item you’ve requested is not available." YET!

Upon even closer examination, if we look at the time line of the pictures from this morning it appears the pages in question are under construction as we speak. Notice, the navigation bar at the top of the page at 12:28 PM ET.

This navigation bar wasn’t there at 10:55 AM ET and 12:07 PM ET. (The Apple guys are out in Cupertino, CA. No worries, they aren’t working through lunch.)

GO APPLE GO!

I say long awaited because you have been able to download video podcasts via your iPhone from the iTunes store for as long as I’ve had my iPhone. These include the hour long video ‘podcasts’ of television shows such as Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow and the like. I was never sure where the distinction was drawn between an hour long video podcast and an hour long TV show, and apparently at this point neither does Apple. Thanks guys!

As a note to the astute reader... as you scroll the fifth picture, with the message 'The item you requested is not available," is meant to illustrate how the movie 'The Wrestler' (pictured in the fourth pic as you scroll down) hadn't loaded. The error page i used is actually for me trying to load 'The Spirit' by Frank Miller. Once that didn't load i attempted to load 'The Wrestler' which also did not load. I have used the screen shot from "The Spirit" not loading to indicate that "The Wrestler" hadn't loaded.

While I assume both error screens would look the same, the timestamps on the pictures obviously indicate that "The Wrestler" was loading after the screen with the error message had been displayed.

Don't let this timeline miscue distract you from the essential truth in this breaking piece of Apple news.

This will be much better when the new 32G iPhone comes out in June. Right now, between the apps and music I am cramped for space. Who knew there was a limit on the app screens you can have...

Still, the iPhone is the best phone that I've ever had, except for the original Micro-TAC Motorola which was my first ever cell phone and opened up a whole new world of being chained to a cell phone provider... ;-)

The iPhone is head and shoulders above the Palm Treo that I had prior to it. It was a Windows Mobile based Palm and there was so much that it wouldn't do, plus it killed my address book repeatedly and wouldn't sync with my mac.

I have been watching video (including TV shows) on my iPhone from day one. I guess the difference is that I had to put them on my computer and then synch the phone with the laptop. Now you can skip that step. Is that right?

It strikes me that downloading a TV show directly onto the phone will take almost forever. It takes pretty long on the computer. I'm happy that you can do this. It is nice to have an option. But I just don't know how practical it is.

Yesterday I was inspired to download some of the American Idol videos, as I had not seen the show. They were taking a long time. Then the phone would shut down (as it does to save battery power) and in that shut down mode, does the download continue? I wasn't sure. I ended up synching it with the laptop and letting the laptop take over the download process.

Well, thank goodness. I hope it allows you to stream them while you download them, too, so I can listen to Keith and Rachel on my commute home whilst downloading.

Now if they can only add A2DP Bluetooth support, so I don't have to attach that clunky iMuffs adapter . . .

AT&T isn't likely to agree to allow this over their 3g network though. They have already balked about the Sling Box app and have forbid it from using the cell network to actually watch video in spite of the fact that the BlackBerry version DOES allow streaming over their cellular network from what I've heard.

AT&T, the iPhone has saved their ass AND allowed their CEO to have a huge salary plus bonuses and yet they crap on it whenever they can. It must make sense to someone but not to me. I'm still fuming over the iPhone being locked into AT&T hell.

Been listening to public and internet radio extensivly over my iPhone over recent weeks. Except for speed and perhaps freezing that may occur because of memory, the concept of live or large format TV makes perfect sense.

About fricken time! I was wondering when they would eventually open things up and allow movie downloads through the iPhone. Imagine the possibility and revenue streams this will open up to the movie studios, quite frankly if they don't see the potential in this innovation, they need laser eye surgery, it would be completely short sighted if they were not part of this.

If it can be done on a laptop then it can be done on an iphone. (sort of) The only REAL prob with the flexibility is that there is NO ability to run more than one app at a time. Unless it is a core app..The 3rd part apps are not that privileged.

I got my iphone and am still getting used to it, synced it with itunes fine and got all my photos, address book, songs etc but how do I get videos that I have bought from itunes onto my phone? I can see the video in the downloads section but can't drag it over to the movies folder or my iphone itself!

And I know it would never happen, but it would be nice to be able to get a tailor-made download specifically for the iPhone/iPod touch's native resolution, rather than the huge 1.5-2GB movie files we normally consume if they did something like this. It would cut the download time down, and if you don't intend to watch the movie on anything but your iPod, it could be a good way to have the movie, but not have it consume as much space. Heck, if they were able to pull this off on a rental model, I'd be happy.

I don't know if I could see this work.

People usually watch TV at home, and there is really only Wi-Fi at home (I know there isn't, but people don't go into a Starbucks and start watching TV on a mobile phone while drinking coffee)

If it was over 3G, I would say that the connection quality would be really bad.

i tried many converters to play a converted file for my iPhone but no luck, actually the problem is the phone is giving some non compatibility error which is really weird then i used factory format and this time the video played but not with the actual size, help me please.

Not impressed; I've seen equally good, perhaps better, recognition systems. The iTunes/utube search could have been written by any one of millions of high school students. What would have been cool is iPhone integration (and there was none): I want to have an active camera view that when I draw a circle around something with my index finger freezes the frame, negotiates with the server, then displays info on what I'd circled and I don't want it just for buying things (although that's that funding lever); If I'm walking in the woods and see a strange flower I want to be able to point my iPhone at it, circle the flower and find out what I'm looking at.

I hardly ever use my laptop at home (I usually actually leave it at work) and use my iphone instead and it’s been very frustrating that I can’t download TV shows or movies directly on my iphone. It would be fantastic if this is true.

Iphone has been giving me problems since i bought it, especially when trying to load or run multimedia. However, the new iphone 3Gs seems to have rectified this problem and is cool gadget now. The Multimedia navigation is also cool.

The iPhone can be charged when connected to a computer for syncing across the included USB to dock connector cable, similar to charging an iPod. Alternatively, a USB to AC adapter (or "wall charger," also included) can be connected to the cable to charge directly from an AC outlet.
