Love For Israel Need Not Include Fawning Over Its Leaders

The Hallway To The Dome Of The Rock, Jerusalem    -- from the CIA Fact book

Frankly, I was frightened by the arrogance displayed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his recent visit here. And what it tells us about the state of the United States.

On  television, I watched President Obama's respectful suggestion that, in general, Israel's borders should go back to the boundaries before  the 1967 war Israel had with its neighbors. The  annexation of  land through warfare is illegal according to the United Nation's Charter. Netanyahu brazenly and rudely dismissed our President's suggestion in a sermonizing tone, while Obama sat angered and stony faced.

This was the pits; but next, the PM  addressed the U.S. Congress and got twenty nine standing ovations, though he had just dissed our president on national TV.

I felt like this is just one more way that our politicians have been bought and paid for. Obama was going to do so many things, but he had to make too many compromises with the powers that fund, who really don't want anything changed. What more proof do we need that the American people no longer own their own country?

It is estimated that Jewish Americans donate up to 65% of the funding for the Democratic Party's political campaigns. It is it any wonder that Congress acts so slavish toward Israel ?

And in the 2011 fiscal year budget, Obama wanted us to give Israel $3 billion in foreign aid. We only spend $3.9 billion for Afghanistan.

As for the Republicans, they have decided that God is on the side of Israel, as well as on the side of the GOP. These Republicans are our version of Al-Qaeda. They too, have condemned a whole civilization of people that they know nothing about. They don't care who gets killed, as long as they get to impose their  fanatical religious ideas.

The ugly Israeli/Palestinian brawl should have ended decades ago.  9-11 did not come "out of the blue." It was one symptom of the long simmering resentment toward the U.S. for being too biased in favor of Israel.

I reject the idea that any criticism of Israel reveals antisemitism. This country has embraced the Jewish people. Though I am from a different culture, I personally married a Jew. Many American Jews are also critical of Israel. As are many Israelis.

Israel will always be our friend and ally. But Israel will never  have to make any tough changes as long as the U.S. keeps protecting it from any  of the negative consequences of its self-centered foreign policy.

This is what the TV show Intervention calls "loving an addict to death." It is not true love.

Here is the prediction of Middle East Expert Professor Juan Cole for what will happen if Israel stays on this current trajectory:

"The most likely outcome ... is a one state solution achieved over decades, with much heartbreak and violence and ruined lives in the meantime. The Jews of Israel will likely end up like the Maronite Christians of Lebanon. France created Lebanon in 1920 for a then Christan majority, but Christian out-migration and rapid Muslim population growth reduced the Maronites to only about 22 percent of the population today...."

As for the current trajectory the U.S. is on --  total public political campaign funding may be the only thing that will put the general public back in charge of the United States.

I so much agree with you on Israel--in fact, just had a letter published in a regional paper to this effect. But Obama speaks the truth, as he sees it, regardless of the political consequences. I have nothing but respect for his contribution to this debate and for his leadership, in general.
Such a volatile topic--and complicated. You are so right about the implications it has on America and life in America. More people need to understand the connection, and yet I suspect the added viewpoints will add not clarity, but complexity, to the mix. I cannot imagine a resolution will come about during my lifetime.
