- Bio
- Kathryn Hudson has been a writer for most of her life. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, she currently calls Baltimore, Md., her home.
As an award-winning journalist, Ms. Hudson spent several years as a newspaper reporter. She is currently raising a beautiful daughter on her own as a single mother along with two obnoxious cats (they are probably both French-Canadian). In her free time she writes. In her regular life, she juggles a cute infant along with a job in sales, blogs, and short films about everything. She welcomes new friends and correspondence, especially from befuddled new parents like herself.

Teen moms can change the world, too
A week before I learned I was pregnant, I finally sat down to watch my first episode of “Teen Mom” on MTV. At the time, I was 41, unemployed and could no longer afford cable. So, with my trusty laptop computer and a growing sense of restlessness, I got very much… Read full post »
The object of her affection

My 23-month-old daughter is a simple girl (so far). I’m not supposed to let her watch television, but I can’t help it. Every commercial is like a 30-second movie to her and if it has danceable music, she’s shaking her little bum the momen… Read full post »
This is offensive, Target
“Is this offensive?” my friend, Joan asked on Facebook this morning. She had posted a link to a story about dark-grey plus-sized dresses at Target that were labeled “manatee” as their color. The store issued an apology to the woman who initially discovered… Read full post »
How not to yell at your kids (or self)
As I carefully cut up and tasted the strawberries I was making as part of my daughter’s lunch, I was amazed that they tasted so good for something you’re not supposed to buy in February. Maybe because I love strawberries like nothing else and it’s been a while since I’ve had… Read full post »
Post traumatic job disorder
It was dark and cloudy above my old office. I sat in a car outside all day watching the place but not in some creepy, stalker-like way. At first I didn’t get too close, but suddenly I noticed a swimming pool and deck and everyone was cavorting in and out of… Read full post »
Doing it all, whether I like it or not
“Bad keee!” My 20-month-old toddler shouted at her two cats this morning. I was sipping on my first cup of coffee as our 15-year-old cat, Cassie, got pummeled by our younger cat, Zuzu. I’ve admonished them on many occasions for their kitty spats which often result in flying fur and… Read full post »
Midnight showings
My life has been encompassed by death.
Two weeks before I was born, my great-grandfather passed away in an
unusual spring heat-wave. He had eagerly anticipated the birth of
his second great-granddaughter. While my family held a happy
barbecue, my great-grandfather suffered a major stroke and passed
a… Read full post »
A single mom's first Christmas with baby
It’s 9 a.m. on a Saturday and I’m enjoying relative peace and quiet save for the leaking bathtub faucet. My cats are in different corners of my apartment curled up and cozy. My daughter is lying on the sofa next to me sleeping very sweetly. I would like to make a… Read full post »
An open letter to my "baby daddy"
Dear Baby Daddy: (This is not directed at a black man. My baby daddy is a white dude)
This is how my day started. At approximately 4:03 a.m., my youngest cat (I only own two, relax cat-haters), decided it was time for me to wake up. I ignored for as… Read full post »

And baby makes two, adventures in single mommyhood

I hope my daughter survives me.
Last weekend, as we were rushing about getting ready to visit her grandmother’s house, I got a little over-zealous on her grooming. As my four-month old daughter lay on her play mat in only… Read full post »
I am strong and wise and I know no fear
But the truth is plain to see
She was sent to rescue me
I see who I wanna be
In my daughter's eyes. "
From Martina McBride's song, "In My Daughter's Eyes."
Babies. They are tiny, helpless and quite defenseless and that’s right after they are born. Before then, however, they live in a protective bubble, floating about in a dreamy, warm bath inside their mother’s uterus. Sure, they are subject to the actions of their mothers which may affect t… Read full post »
You know that hour of your life you can never get back because you’ve spent it watching something completely stupid or insane? I’ve just spent the past hour watching “The Maury Povich Show.” Instead of complaining about how crazy or silly I found it, I have to say I actually f… Read full post »
A straight spouse on same-sex marriage: Legalize it now!
Once upon a time I married a gay man. To my friends, this is not news. I’ve often shared the sometimes painful, sometimes funny story of how I met and married my ex-husband and how it ended some five years ago. While I can look back on my old life now… Read full post »
41, pregnant, single...and scared
Nothing in my life has ever gone the way it’s supposed to go. As the last of my friends to get married, I was the only one to wind up married to a gay man. We divorced and I embarked on a hap-hazard love life that has lead me down some… Read full post »

I’ve spent most of the past few hours crying. Although I am pregnant, it has nothing to do with hormones and everything to do with my security. I received a distressing call from a potential landlord and I’m starting to worry. She is the… Read full post »
Knocked up, but not down about it
My little Jellybean.
When I found out I was pregnant, the stick didn’t blue, but I almost did. There was no hovering precariously over a toilet bowl with a plastic stick between my legs. I learned of my future motherhood via e-mail. I will gladly explain.
For everyon… Read full post »

Living well IS the best revenge
Hate is not just an intense emotion; it can be a powerful motivator, too. After reading the utterly mean and hate-filled rant by Marie Claire blogger, Maura Kelly last week, I addressed the controversy from my own side—as a fat woman. After receiving a tidal wave of warm, supportive c… Read full post »
A video of thanks!!!
Maura Kelly, a dating blogger for Marie Claire, a women’s magazine, thinks I’m too fat to be loved.
As I often do, Kelly, a New York-based freelance writer, used another blog/story as a jumping off point to share her opinion on something she has given a lot of thought. How… Read full post »

No job after college? Demand a refund of your tuition!
Since our country was declared to be in a recession some two years ago, there has been ample evidence everywhere that we still are in one. One of the first things President Barack Obama encouraged everyone to do was return to school. The theory behind this was to help people stay… Read full post »
