Chicago Red Stars v Boston Breakers.

Previously I said that the WPS league was entering a critical period after the initial kick off hoopla. I thought that the week to week intensity would have to remain high if fans were to get hooked on the league’s product.

Well, it looks like the players and coaches understood this and the weekend’s matches produced some action worthy of the highlight reels.

My local Chicago Red Stars beat Boston by a 4-0 score and pleased the cold rain soaked crowd with some great finishing. Megan Rapinoe and Karen Carney (back from her midweek play in England’s victory over Norway) each scored terrific goals from the top right of the area. Brittany Klein finished a nice Red Stars attacking move with a drive from the top of the box. What was also great to see for the home fans was Carli Lloyd driving home a pile driver free kick to start the scoring.  With the clean sheet, there were many smiling faces headed to the parking lot outside Toyota Park on Saturday night.

I’m also sure that the league was happy to see the goal fest in California on Sunday’s FSC Match of the Week. In particular, they were probably pleased to see Washington get its first win and Abby Wambach net her first two goals of the season. The second goal was scored in the last seconds of play after a gritty comeback by FC Gold. FC Gold’s Tiffany Weimer and Kandace Wilson are emerging as two players to watch this season.

FC Gold v Washington.

Even the scoreless draw between the LA Sol and St. Louis provided drama as both teams had penalty shots saved in the match.

So, I believe that WPS has to be happy about this week’s play and fans of Washington, Chicago and St. Louis in particular have to look forward to more great performances from their clubs as the season progresses.

I LOVE to watch female sports. Every bit as much as men. I really hope more money is spent in the future and more money spent on marketing these professional women sports teams. Americans first and foremost need to get off their collective asses and support them when they are made.

KoB it's definitely going to be a rough first season for teams in the WPS league. With this down economy they'll have to work hard to draw fans and keep them coming back. Good entertainment value for money will have to be the theme.

Hope it works. There are some great players in this league.
Watched this with the kids last night after soccer practice and they loved it, especially Clara. I really do think she can see herself when she looks at those girls. Thanks for posting it and for being such a great advocate for women's sports!
mamoore, glad that clara enjoyed it. Hope that it inspires her to keep playing, keep learning. This league just needs fans; the actual play on the field is very entertaining - it speaks for itself.
