Baseball and puppies!

I've had a tough week -- a beloved cousin died --  and I've been in serious need of solace.

Watch this video and try not to cry:

Then look at this cuteness and try not to be devoured by jealousing!

Wonderful moment, Joan. Thanks for posting.

And what a cute puppy!!! :)
The miracles of life! Blessed be your cousin Joan.

In this case, your puppy is upstaging both Obama and Willie, big time!!! Very nice new avatar photo, Joan!
You’re so right. It’s just about impossible to not tear up @that. And what I found really moving was how it’s on the main page of the White House website. This is truly an inspiring moment in the history of our country.
Really, that video did my heart good this evening.

My psychologist's office has a "therapy dog" named Gunner - same exact breed. Gunner's job is greeting you with perfect joy, jumping in your lap, licking your hand, and reveling in all the petting and love you are willing to give. I don't know how much better therapy could possibly get!
Blessings,

The Fear of Love
by Wendell Berry

I come to the fear of love
as I have often come,
to what must be desired
and to what must be done.

Only love can quiet the fear
of love, and only love save
from diminishment the love
that we must lose to have.

We stand as in an open field,
blossom, leaf, and stem,
rooted and shaken in our day,
heads nodding in the wind.
Willie is the greatest ball player I ever watched play. Sadie is beautiful.
My condolences.

The video and your puppy are the real deal. hope I can pet the pup next week in SF. Sorry for your loss.
Feel better. It's got to go puppies then baseball, as much as I love America's past time.
Wonderful video. Beautiful puppy.
Peace
Willie has always been a gracious and giving class act. It's nothing short of a miracle that this video was even possible. Gives me a great feeling of pride that we've come so far in my lifetime, but I also see how very far we still have to go.

Puppy love for everyone!
My condolences on your cousin. Baseball and puppies are excellent sources of solace. And music. Listen to music.
love the video! -- if only Willie Mays had been playing in the All-Star Game last night maybe the National League would've won -- (still stinging from that "almost" in the 8th) -- And that is one adorable doggie.
6 words: Willie Mays on Air Force One.

That is joy.
I envy most those who carry themselves with such grace, someone who would post a feel-good video clip when they did not, so that others might smile. Hugs, Joan, and condolences.
Loss of any kind is hard. But it also can make us aware of all we still have and knowing that people still love us is a miraculous thing. I'm so sorry for your loss, Joan. And I, too, thank you for posting that lovely video! Wow. I was afraid it wouldn't happen in my lifetime. I'm glad I stayed around to see it! And that puppy? Awwwww. D
Condolences on you loss, and congratulations on your pup. He is adorable!
Sorry for your loss.
I'm very sorry about your cousin. It's always hard. But I have to exercise my right to dissent concerning the puppy issue. The three women in our house got a puppy while I was away in Philly for research. But the little critter doesn't doesn't seem quite as cute now that he's up most of the night and chewing everything in sight.
Such a sweet puppy is Sadie, I hope she is helping you with your loss.
I need a puppy!! My ex-mother-in-law died this last night...

When cousins die, it seems to really hit home. My prayers and condolences sent.

Prayers from here to and for you and your cousin. Thanks for the Willy Mays video; I posted it to my Face Book. I hope that today finds you smiling. PS Cute puppy!
First Joan, I extend my condolences on the passing of your cousin.

The video above from Air Force One of two men from two different periods in history shows how their respect for one another and their appreciation of their accomplishments helped changed the lives of a nation. These characteristics are what make President Obama & Hall of Famer, Willie Mays great men.

Nothing can help lift ones spirits like a cute, playful puppy!
I"m so sorry to hear of your loss, JOan but am delighted you have a cure for most things. Speaking of therapy dogs, Annette, I am, I hope permitted a brag, 5 Ahavapicaro Havanese now have there Delta certification as therapy dogs as does 2 Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonkas from our kennel. It fills my heart more than their championships did.
Rated for puppies and empathy. So sorry for your loss.
The video made me teary eyed. I love them both. Leo Durocher once said of the Say Hey Kid "He could do the five things you have to do to be a superstar: hit, hit with power, run, throw, and field. And he had that other ingredient that turns a superstar into a super superstar. He lit up the room when he came in. He was a joy to be around." Sorry to hear about your loss, and the pup is adorable.
I'm sorry you're having a tough week, Joan, and sorry you lost someone close to you.

Thanks for sharing the video - it is very touching. One can only imagine how Willie must have felt!
Sorry to hear of your sadness, Joan. xo
Double awwws and condolences.
Thanks for sharing this, and your adorable pup!
Thanks, everyone. I just had both images in my mind and had to share them together. I'm sure my cousin appreciates them!
May I suggest "Singin' in the Rain" as an antidote for sorrow? (The "Moses Supposes" number, especially.)
Thanks, and BTW, like your new avatar. Where's the hat? :)
Condolences re: your cousin...most of mine are closer to me than my siblings. Thoughts and prayers, (yes, I pray) are with you and your family. ;(
Yep, and please don't ever forget about Mr. Jackie Robinson (#42). He was "The Man".
Rated & Cheers!
Thank you, Joan. Excellence in any field is inspiring and it's good to see Two Greats come together and explore the history. We have overcome a lot.

Sorry about your cousin.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! JOAN, you have brightened my day with that clip, did it make anyone else cry?

As for that puppy maybe you should consider hiring some secret service agents to keep that pup away from jealousing admirers! Your pup is dangerously cute, kind of makes it hard to act mad when they've done something naught when they're that cute, doesn't it?
So sorry about your loss, Joan. Thanks for the uplifting piece.
I'm glad you finally got rid of the hat; it was so last January...

condolences for you loss
that dog is so cute it looks like a steiff
I think that puppy likes you.
Priceless post on a day of sadness.

I am sad for your loss. My cousins are dear to me and I dread the day when it's my turn to grieve. Peace to you and your family.
I'm sorry about your cousin Joan. I'm glad you have adorable Sadie to comfort you...
There's been 44 Presidents. There's only one Willie Mays.
So sorry for the loss of your cousin, Joan. Great for Willie Mays being on Air Force One. He is the best, a class act! Sadie looks like the best also.
Okay, with out trying to be jealousing, I think I can up these two. (ha!)

1) our very faithful chihuahua, the funniest pet I ever knew

Here :

http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=67770560&albumID=764684&imageID=1092568

I'm not ashamed to brag, that we go for walks at Studio City park almost every day. He's very good at walking by my side. People always comment about what an especially sweet chihuahua he is (the breed often is snappy and over-protective). I attribute this to the fact that he actually belongs to my son, an especially sweet-natured boy. My s.o. says that he whimpers when I'm missing, such as when we're all together in the car ready for a long distance outing & then I leave the car to go back and fetch something I've forgotten from the house.

2) my heart-rendering story of an old, black baseball star, as follows:

When I was homeless and sleeping on the sidewalk of Hollywood Bl. during the late-80s, I occasionally brought some original songs to play at a local club, called Gorkys (if I remember correctly). There is where I met Don Level, also a down-on-his-luck musician, a vocalist who previously had worked Motown records (as background vocalist). During those few months, we spent some time together writing some songs, which we did by sneaking into practice rooms at nearby L.A. City College, until the manager at Gorkys, after hearing our material, allowed us to use the piano at the club during the day.

One day, Don said "We're going to John's house." I didn't know what he meant and, teasing, he refused to tell me until we got down to the south central area, by bus of course. Then he outed "You know who John Roseboro is, don't you?"

"You're kidding, right?" I was stoked. I'd been a serious Dodgers fan when I was kid, and even had won two free tickets for correctly guessing that Maury Wills was the year's MVP in a public contest, back in '67, if I remember the date correctly. The next thing I knew, we were knocking on Roseboro's door, at an unbelievably modest dwelling down in, what everyone knows isn't exactly the most upscale area of the world. I mean, this was a huge baseball star, man.

Then, there he was. Standing in the doorway, saying hello to Don, as if he was just a normal guy, like anybody else. For the next hour or so, I was floating on a cloud. We went in, the living room was modestly furnished, kind of dark in there, and toward the back area, near the small dining nook, was some equipment set up, a keyboard etc.

Don and I played a few tunes for John Roseboro (I still can't believe it as I'm writing this), some classic soul styled stuff that we'd been composing together, and then John said something about how it sounded real good. Even though I've played countless arena concerts (see my bio), I was the most nervous I'd ever been, and I guess both of them noticed, and laughed over it.

That was it. We left shortly thereafter. Don and I walked the few blocks to the bus stop, and headed back to Hollywood, and our pitiful lives up there. But I will never forget that hour, one of the most memorable hours I've ever spent in my life.

I don't know what happened to Don, nor John after that. A few months later, I got a call from a bass player in Vegas who asked me to come out and fill in for a keyboardist who'd quit another soul music act, Lace, who were working steady on the strip. I played for them for a while, then some other club gigs came my way and I stayed in Vegas for a few years after that.

Some years later, I tried calling an old number I had on Don, but it was disconnected. Who knows? But I'll never forget the short time that I knew him, and especially that day we played for Roseboro. In fact, I still have (remember) a tune we composed together, and I play it sometimes on the piano, imagining him singing it.

Oh, and sometimes I wish I would have been less nervous there, and maybe asked John what it was like to be so angry (about a hit by pitch, if I recall) that he would chase after Juan Marichal with a bat!

Baseball and puppies, doesn't get much better than that. Well, maybe a Home Mortgage Loan, but that's about it.
Really interested article. Baseball and puppies are excellent sources of solace. And music. Listen to music. Thanks for the Willy Mays video; I posted it to my Face Book. I hope that today finds you smiling. PS Cute puppy!

Baseball and puppies! Now that's an intriguing combination. Not sure if I understand how well they work together, however but if you need to know how to win a guy back, well, then puppies are right up your alley!
