A Hard Day's Blog

Oh, by all means, I'd be quite prepared for that eventuality.

Some Nashville Sounds That Might Surprise You

Rate: 9 Flag

So I know y'all are thinkin' that we don't do anything but country music in Nashville, but I'm here to tell you that it just ain't true. Below are a couple of videos from two very different bands, and I think they illustrate the point that we have some of the most talented musicians around living right here in Music City U.S.A.

Elle Macho - This Is Not a Love Song

David Mead on guitar, Lindsay Jamison on drums and Butterfly Boucher on bass. Is this chick a rock star, or what?

Swan Dive - Circle

My super-talented brother-in-law, Bill DeMain on guitar and vocals, and the lovely and talented Molly Felder on vocals and cocktail drum. These guys are huge in Japan, Thailand and South Korea!

Bonus Track:

Los Straitjackets - Tempest

I've posted this one before, but I don't think you can ever get enough of a surf band that got its start in a totally landlocked state.  (Danny Amis, aka Daddy-O Grande, the guitarist in the blue and silver mask, is fighting multiple myeloma. Keep a good thought for him.)

And here's an oldie but a goodie.  Webb Wilder, the last of the full-grown men, whose credo is:  Work hard, rock hard, eat hard, sleep hard, grow big, and wear glasses if you need 'em.

Webb Wilder - Human Cannonball

Jeanette, as your post mentions, a lot of people do associate Nashville with Country and your three examples are perfect for breaking that myth! A friend of my brother's had moved there a few years ago and her music is much more along the lines of Ambient. Not too long ago she headed off to the LA area to further her career in music there.

The title of "Not A Long Song" is so close to Public Image Limited's "It's Not A Love Song" that I thought it might be the same song, but listening to it I could see it is another great sounding, but different song. Swan Dive with your brother-in-law has some great visuals along with their cool sounding song! Thanks for this interesting look at Nashville that show it's more than Country!
Jeanette, you just made my day. Nothing could be better than to end the day with some surf music and lounge sounds. Los Straightjackets has just the right feel for a hot summer night. Swan Dive has that sixties lounge thing going. They also remind me of Swing out Sister for some reason. R
Awesome! Your BIL and Molly remind me a little of an American version of Swing Out Sister. And man o man, I'm digging Jamison and they're both on iTunes

http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/id334618706 = elle macho

http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/swan-dive/id5046342 = swan dive

and after a couple of beers I could listen to Los Straitjackets to the wee hours.

Love this, thanks.
Thanks for the awesome music on a Saturday night. I love all three tracks, but I keep going back to Elle Macho. Butterfly Boucher is my new hero!
These are three talented, innovative bands, Jeannette. Nice diverse selections and how cool it must be to have a brother in law in the music business. I did know Nashville wasn't just a mecca for country artists; Kings of Leon is one group I like that immediately comes to mind.
I am in love with Los Straitjackets!
Thanks for the musical tour ... it's always fun to see expectations get turned around. Rated ... and rocking.
John, thanks for stopping by and listening. So glad you liked the Swan Dive video! (My husband has mastered several CDs by a Nashville band called Hammock, and their music is in the ambient genre.)

Hi Willie. Thanks!

Trudge, yes, I can definitely see why they remind you of Swing Out Sister. Didn't know you liked both surf and lounge music - you have mighty good taste!

Barry, thanks for posting the iTunes info! Los Straitjackets also have many CDs to choose from. I never get tired of them either.

Nana, I think my husband has a crush on Butterfly. Come to think of it, I guess I do too!

Margaret, it is very cool being in the same family as Bill. He is also a successful freelance music journalist, and one hell of a songwriter. He's worked with some really interesting people. Glad you liked the vids! (Would you believe I've never seen Kings of Leon? I know who they are, but don't know enough about their music.)

Miguela, I honestly don't know how anyone could not like Los Straitjackets. First time I saw them, I knew it was going to be a very special relationship. :-)

Bellemeade, thanks so much for listening. Here's to turning around expectations!
Loved the vids! They all cooked.
With my surfing background I cannot resist Los Strait Jackets with their Lucha Libre costumes, crazed go go girl and old surf flic pics! And really liked Web Wilder too.
