THIS JUST IN! scientific advice for suicidal women...

"The sickness rolled through me in great waves. After each wave it would fade away and leave me limp as a wet leaf and shivering all over and then I would feel it rising up in me again, and the glittering white torture chamber tiles under my feet and over my head and all four sides closed in and squeezed me to pieces."

- Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar, Chapter 4

...............................................................................................

Look, I love Science as does any sane savvy intellectual.

But this is a bit beyond the pale:

Kitty litter may not be as harmless as it seems.

A parasite commonly found in cat litter boxes may heighten women’s susceptibility to suicide, according to a study published Monday in the Archives of General Psychiatry.

……………………………………………..

Women are assaulted every day with insidious innuendos that they are not attractive enough, and that they simply must tend to their physical form: their skin, , their tummies which gotta be crunched down to an aesthetically pleasing size, their eyelashes, their hair,  their unwanted hair, their  offensive smell, fixable by  vaginal accoutrements to make their core clean & healthy .

I am glad I am not a gal, for I probably would have killed myself long ago, by 1) swimming out to sea and drowning, or 2) slitting my wrists in my warm bathwater, leaving  a  cool ‘bloodbath’   that certainly could be cleaned up nicely, leaving no mess.

…………………………………………………………….

§  The blood jet is poetry,

There is no stopping it.

§  "Kindness"

 PLATH

.................................................................................

There is a parasite in pussy cat’s litter ,they say. They know this from a   “study of more than 45,000 women in Denmark  (which) found that females who were infected by the parasite were one and a half times more likely to try to take their own lives than those who were not affected.”

…………………………………………

The parasite is T. gondii.

“We can't say with certainty that T. gondii caused the women to try to kill themselves, but we did find a predictive association between the infection and suicide attempts later in life that warrants additional studies,” Dr. Teodor Postilache, the author of the study, said in a press release.

………………………………………………………

It is not only through cat feces that it is spread: also, unwashed vegetables  and undercooked meat.

………………………………………………………………….

Hey, it is just a ‘’heads up” , ladies.

Postolache says that more research needs to be done to determine the link between suicide rates and the parasite-caused brain changes.

The psychiatrist and suicide neuroimmunology expert at the University of Maryland School of Medicine says it is not time to start throwing out kitty litter boxes."This is a very prevalent parasite, a very successful parasite, that affects one-third of the world population," Postolache told CNN. "One-third of them are not attempting suicide."

…………………………………………………………

Shit, I hope you don’t actually read it.

…………………………………………………………….

This is my very problem with women: they are too damn clean, for the male sensibility. Always insisting upon washing hands, washing up before sex, washing your face clean of any resemblance to the fellow you fell in love with at first, who was not worried about such stuff.

…………………………………………………………..

I desire the things which will destroy me in the end...PLATH

.............................................

One of my male fantasies is to scrub & clean  and rub off my face. I hate the face I got when I go out in public. It feels like a plastic sticky mask I have to put on.

I want to scrub off this face of mine, and get down to my original face, the one the mystics say (and I believe them!) I had before I was born.

In other relevant news:

Drinking more than two cups of coffee per day, or any other combination of caffeinated beverages, may lower your chances of developing skin cancer, a new reports says. The results included other caffeinated products such as soda, tea and chocolate.

The report in the journal Cancer Research found that caffeine potentially reduced the risk of developing basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer though generally considered less serious than melanoma.

"Our data indicate that the more caffeinated coffee you consume, the lower your risk of developing basal cell carcinoma," said Jiali Han, Ph.D

……………………………………………..

That helps me to get up the courage to go with Big Sister to a Connecticut beach Thursday, weather permitting. I need to be among women who are not afraid to lay out all that lovely skin to Sol.

Woohoo- I ingest a LOT of caffeine daily. Good on me!

Yeah, be glad you're not a woman. You would be entering your perimenopausal years. The second puberty. The crazed, continuous, years long PMS of perimenopause. Such joy.

I don't know about women and sex. I did meet a guy once, though, who told me in great detail that anyone he had sex with would be freshly showered and excruciatingly clean. He was kinda weird.

This was a fun post.
i am rather an expert in perimenopause, and i would not wish it
on my worst enemy.

cleanliness is next to godliness, the religious damn fools say.

before "cleanliness", i gotta extrapolate, was a good hard mean
immune system.

so many immune system weird shit going on, PHYLIS
Yeah, the toxoplasmosis thing has gone wild lately on the web...
some studies say it causes Alzheimer's, some studies say it prevents Alzheimer's, some say it's asymptomatic, some say it's very symptomatic -- just keep your hands and produce washed if you own a cat or have a garden, and keep your head out of the litter box while breathing deeply --
I hate to have some country-wide freak out with formerly loved cats stuffing the already overstuffed animal shelters, just because of the "latest" news on cat poo...as if humans haven't lived with cats and been fine for thousands of years already.
More thoughts I rarely hear from a woman:
Perimenopause isn't meant to be such a big deal -- I am completely convinced it's our processed diets that cause so much trouble -- and I've been there.
I absolutely love being in my fifties and am also completely tired of women's incessant ragging on themselves and their bodys' life processes.
Women are a miracle!!!
Well, I'm apparently at risk for suicide , but looking pretty good for not getting skin cancer. I just hope I'm drinking enough coffee to offset all those years of lifeguarding.
just thinking..no argument from me,re the miracle of woman.
only thing that prevented me from ending it;the
possibilty
some woman might someday take me as i am,
in a serous, seriously fun way..

hope springs eternal. but women are gonna be
tramped on good
in a MITT ROMNEY administration..
gonna get mor inaccessible than ever
and i cannot blame em.
JL: keep yr ear to the scientists . they got only yer best interests
at heart. you are at risk,
but with some good medical care (you got a plan, i hope....?)
you will be okey dokey.
It's obvious.

Ted Hughes had toxoplasmosis.
I drink no coffee or tea.. bad on me.. When I heard that news yesterday I was shocked.
Now for the parasites in the kitty litter..
HMMM I never had a cat due to allergies so what was causing my problem with the russian roulette suicide I had for years.
HMMM
HAPPY 4TH.
HUGGGGGGGGG
toxo plasma gondii is right out of science fiction. literally billions of humans are infected with it. maybe up to 40% or some crazy number like that. it is thought to be mostly asymptomatic but studies have shown it can cause a subtle shift in behavior patterns. scientists believe the parasite is only doing this as a "side effect" because it cant breed in humans, but science has been wrong before.... it is a not well understood parasite. its considered a significant public health issue by many scientists & experts. its been shown that people who are infected are more likely to be in auto accidents. wild stuff man! I am not making this up. Ive been thinking of writing on it for a long time. its like a real life mild zombification mechanism. I suspect that we could even say that there are currently two species of humans, homo sapiens and homo sapiens gondii....
oh and t.gondii is also implicated in schizophrenia in a small number of cases....
I made my cat read this to know the risks we take to keep her pleased with her digs.
@ vzn: what you say about it is exactly why I find the recent hype overrated, I've read a lot out there too.
"Subtle shifts in behavior" -- compared to the wild shifts in behavior, including violent suicides, from dished-out pills that are prescribed ubiquitously, and too often improperly, in this country?
That's the area for uproar, in my opinion.

And I firmly believe good medicine has it's place and has helped many. That is not what I am addressing -- however, we all know there is some crazy chaos generated by rampant pill usage in our country that causes huge amounts of "behavior shifts" and damage like car accidents, violent behavior and suicides...and that's not even addressing alcohol abuse.

I wonder -- why all this now?
Another smoke screen in the media?

Is this toxoplasmosis news more like the Avian Flu freakout that just happened to happen during the quiet re-passage of The Patriot Act -- that Act that stole even more personal freedoms?

Who knows, maybe toxoplasmosis is terrible, but from all of what I've read -- for awhile now too, the studies are conflicting and consequences of exposure sound way less serious than other issues we have to deal with in this country.

Again, a fear freakout is not going to help at all -- and cats don't deserve to be dumped en masse and/or treated more cruelly than some already are.
nick..good theory..dig the f-er up , do a test.
then throw his corpse in a bonfire.

Linda. how the hell do you get thru life with no caffeine/
?
you must be a naturally energetic brilliant gal.

that is my guess..
yo, bro, VZN, RIP THE LID offa this hazard , this awful bug.

'wild stuff man! I am not making this up. Ive been thinking of writing on it for a long time. its like a real life mild zombification mechanism. I suspect that we could even say that there are currently two species of humans, homo sapiens and homo sapiens gondii....'

i am half believing u already.
JUST THINKING! OLD vzn was being facetious.
dont pay any heed to him.
he is a joker, not unlike me.

"I wonder -- why all this now?
Another smoke screen in the media? "

not so much a concerted effort as a well meant
(and good intentions pave the path to hell......)
warning from brainiacs who got research jobs.
they gotta earn their livings too i guess.
I would hazard that anyone that eats fresh veggies has a good chance of having it. I know we had cats, unvaccinated, when I was growing up and they doo-dooed in our veggie gardens. In Florida, my neighborhood had coccidia- one of my dogs got it and gave it to my cat. They also had transient hookworms and roundworms from all of the animals in the neighborhood so it wouldn't surprise me to find out toxoplasma was part of the package. Would it be nice to have a reason besides major depression and undiagnosed PTSD for the way I felt then. Hell yeah. But I'm not holding my breath.

At a guess, toxoplasma has adapted to survive in us humans symbiotically. Otherwise, it would have dies out a long time ago and it's the organism that can adapt that survives. Think heartworms. Started out in dogs, adapted to cats- they'll adapt further soon if they haven't already. Roundworm larva migrate to your eyeball. Hookworm larva burrow through your skin. Sarcoptic mange is not specie specific. We're all born with demodectic mange mites.

We are literally crawling with bugs! And you'll never wash them off. What's a protozoa after that?
well, we guys already know this:

We are literally crawling with bugs! And you'll never wash them off.

but of course we take advantage of that...

i admit it!
.......................

what is not discussed between lovers is this
& it darn well should be;

At a guess, toxoplasma has adapted to survive in us humans symbiotically. Otherwise, it would have dies out a long time ago and it's the organism that can adapt that survives.

what this has to do with our own current prospects is
rather obscure to me. but i am just the messenger
of this data.
ha.
...everything vzn said, until the last three sentences anyway, I've read elsewhere...literally, some articles have said it's an intelligent alien species trying to get to humans through cats...like a mild zombification on purpose.
The modified behavior shifts are the whisker-twitch and human purring.
(Okay, I made the last sentence up. Only the last sentence. But human purring would be just righteous : ))
James, needed writing, I totally agree with JLSathre!! Thank you for looking us after, you are like our big brother here!!! And my best friend!!!
i have diverted my attention from eradication of germs to strengthening of my immune system. for a female brought up in a chinese culture I am proud to declare I have progressed to walking BAREFOOT in my garden, and as further evidence, do NOT wash my feet afterwards. This post did not frighten me.
I heard about the cat thing on the radio and wondered who at OS would write a blog about it. You win!
Perimenopausal here.

On a good day I feel like I'm 15. On a bad day I feel like I'm 15.

No cats. I drink lots of coffee and (even thought I shouldn't because I'm dieting) at least 1 coke (with caffeine and sugar) a day.

I should be ok. Right, Jem?
Well I didn't heed your advice and I read your terrifying article. Just got back from the river after drowning the last of my 232 cats. Although now that I think on it, how do you get infected by that parasite? Wouldn't you have to eat the kitty litter? I might have acted too rashly.

Now what's this about wanting to scrub off your face. That's just silly; if you did, you'd be one of the faceless masses. Plus you don't want the face you had before you were born; it was just a blob of clay and it would scare people, and the crueler ones would pull off chunks of it. Love your face James, it's a good one and you appear to have excellent skin tone.

Now it's true as you say, we women are infected by another more insidious parasite, the one that makes us want to change everything about ourselves even if there was nothing wrong with it in the first place. I suspect it's mostly because we think this is what men want.
Why else would women be having labiaplasty and dreaming of the "perfect" vagina?

Now since you love scientific research so much please find a study that says smoking prevents cancer and is good for the skin.
I sure started a lot of paragraphs with "now." Is it possible to make my first one start with "now" so it looks like that was intentional?

FYI: My secret female fantasy is to have no pores. When I look in my 15x magnifying mirror, my face looks like it could collect enough rainwater to turn the Sahara into a rainforest.
Your lead line is very good.
This answers so much about my life. Mel (willie in the story) was responsible for changin the cat litter and we eventually had three cats. And she wasn't all that tidy about it. After two weeks I would go in scrub up the floor and walls with bleach, so I doubt I was affected. My only suicide attempt came because I thought I was going to be homeless and a coffin was a home of sortsd. But MEl GEEEZ. She was constantly depressed, it just got old. Now I think I know why.

But also, she was a manic coffee and tea drinker, yet she had a lot of skin cancers. She was so white, she could be labeled "clear". So you solved one issue, but the second one?
Not so much
James, hunny -- WHAT .. are you reading? And .. WHY??? You are perennially the trinket in the CrackaJack box - what WILL he spring out at you next??! Happy 4th of July-you're a fire - Cracker! -- Oh. And never mind that Sylvia Plath - after all .. she didn't last.
I think this is my favorite of yours. Terrific! r.
Another reason I am not a "cat" person per se.

I want to scrub off this face of mine, and get down to my original face, the one the mystics say (and I believe them!) I had before I was born.

I know this feeling and to my advantage as a fifty year old woman I am invisible to the world now. I like this essay James and how you strung Plath along throughout it.
Occasionally when the waves of "news" wash over with warnings of dire consequences from ingesting this or that or exposure to such and such or something or other, I take comfort in the words of Jimi Hendrix, thus: "I'm the one's got to die when it's my time to die, so let me live my life the way I want to." He did, and he did.

"Ohhhh, say can you seeeeeeeeee....twaaaaaaaang-g-g-g-g...arrrrooooOOOOOOEEEEEeeeeeeee..."
You come up with the most unusual posts and see clearly the absurd. It's not the bacteria that makes women suicidal. It's cleaning the cat box, after you clean the hamster cage, feed the dog, bathe the kids, clean your desk at work, answer a million questions, clean the bathroom, clean the kitchen. It's all maddening.

I kind of feel like cleaning the clocks of these crazy scientists. My sign of mental health is; I no longer feel like taking myself out to end my misery, now I feel like eliminating those who make me miserable.

Rated.
I knew those cats were trouble. That's why I'm a dog man. Caffeine, what makes you think I drink caffeineeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee?
I love my cat, I am a cat person, I will end up a crazy old cat lady for sure I think..good work James..you did good here, be proud : ))
JT/jme-- see the book "parasite rex" by carl zimmer for some fun bedtime reading. no Im not joking. t.gondii is deadly serious and its very strange how casually its regarded in the world.... dont forget it can cause *serious* birth complications/defects if pregnant women get it. it probably is the cause of some stillborn babies.
re drugs & mental health drugs, I agree they are a serious problem in this country & was thinking of writing on that also. that reminds me though-- I believe it is Lithium which has been shown to suppress the T.gondii parasite capsules and there is some hypothesis that may be the reason for an improvement in some patients who take it....!
JT-- Im sure I despise the patriot act far more than you, and am a hater of fake/manufactured overreaction by the public more than anyone.... did you know you're ~30x more likely to be killed by lightning than a terrorist?
but, real threats do exist, and we are not focused on them sometimes thru decades of conditioning.... eg the Warma$hine is a real threat....
‘HEURE: I come up with these posts because I have a very disordered mind for which I take a lot of drugs. Also, I have always been somewhat of a provocateur. A friendly one, but still, a pain in the ass for a lot of people to deal with. Thank god for os.

And for you! With such very true wisdom: “I no longer feel like taking myself out to end my misery, now I feel like eliminating those who make me miserable.”

~
SCANNER: I was a dog man til I met Georgie puppy. I want a pussy cat. They can entertain themselves, and it seems their cat litter only makes women kill themselves, so I am safe.

~
BRIANNE: are you serious? Be proud? Oh, ok I will try. I pegged u as a cat gal, by the way.

~
VZN: SO delightful to have seduced you over to my blog, for you get a fellow’s brain cells working in new & unexpected ways. This parasite we are discussing is worthy of one of YOUR posts, as you have indefatigable powers of research and scholarly acumen. Also all the other posts you are thinking of doing. Ah, hm. We do a VZN segue into the patriot act, I notice. I better go up and read the comment thread to see how this unforeseen thing has happened, so I can lend my wisdom………….
VZN: Need a quick briefing: "Warma$hine"??????
James and vzn: Hi again -- I do know toxoplasmosis is serious if you are a pregnant woman. The stillbirth of a friend's child is thought possibly due to toxoplasmosis last year. I do not mean to say there is no harm at all, but from what I can tell by a lot of reading, the alarming concern is not for everyone, it's for pregnant women and immune compromised folks, just as has been publicly known for years....and after watching the freakouts in the past over true concerns but poor reactions by our society (Japan's radiation and the mass buying of iodine, wiping out all stores on the West Coast, when iodine would be useless unless one was in Japan or right near high radiation fallout, for instance), I *am* concerned about mass hysteria surrounding this issue.
JUST THINKING: mass hysteria must be pulled out by the root,
which is our god-or Nature-given gift of Reason.
Your warnings are most welcome.
Which is worse, mass hysteria or its flipside mass complacency?
chicken,
you ask a good hard philosophical question.
my hero, Hegel, the coffee/beer loving German genius,
would no doubt place these two options at opposite poles,
and do his famous 'dialectic' on them, wherein contraries are
reconciled in a
yes,
thesis/antithesis/synthesis
move.

i can hear him now..." hysteria! complacency!
either one taken to extremes will lead
to the Other.

from this, hopefully: Reasonable scientific mind."
RITA, plath came willingly along for the ride. She said some funny stuff as we wrote. Also very dark. Ay!

JON: thank u, that means a lot. A very lot.

SONGB: how should I know what my brain gonna do next?

DIANNE: one issue solved is a good day for me.

MARGARET: ah, I see I made you do a dastardly deed. Well, if your ‘art’ causes people to see things clearly, not ‘’as thru a glass darkly’’, then…you have done yr job. These cats were perhaps behind all your odd musings in the wee hours of the morning. Now you can sleep w/o infection of the brain. I am very positive in my attitude to your eventual recovery to utter Absurd Insanity.
I've read about the cat/human parasite for ages. The best theory by me was that the parasite makes humans love cats. And, sure enough, we all know people who hated cats...until one was introduced into their home, whereupon within weeks they were mad (literally?) about them.
JT-- there is not enough mass hysteria in the world.. or rather there is, but for all the useless stuff. like what kim kardashian is up to. etcetera. there is no mass histeria over the US warma$hine, drones all over the planet, the slow asphyxiating death of the US to propaganda & plutocrats.... I havent heard any hysteria, let alone much attn at all, to a serious parasite that infects billions in the population. ho hum, the scientists are looking into it, right? so we dont have to use our brains for that. we can use our brains for more important stuff like Lady Gaga... =)
myriad-- the relationship of humans wrt cats wrt t.gondii has probably not been researched & its prime research territory.
from what I understand tgondii can be transmitted from mother to fetus, therefore I seriously question the scientific argument that it cannot reproduce in humans.... I havent seen solid evidence of this in my own [admittedly meandering & haphazard] research.... its just an assumption of faith by the scientific community, imho....
lets keep in mind that in biology textbooks only a few years old, adult neurogenesis ie the growth of new neurons in adult brains was ruled out and said to be impossible. it is now a recognized scientific phenomenon that has caused a genuine paradigm shift in the field. its important to note the books didnt say it was "unlikely" but said that it "didnt happen". ie they were flat out WRONG. not the 1st time in history this has happened. in fact, quite far from the 1st.... what will be the next kuhnian revolution? there will be many more in our own lifetimes.... keep your eyes open....
