HOMAGE TO DEAR MZ. EPHRON,warrior in evolution

 Mz. Ephron said, once:

It struck me that the movies had spent more than half a century saying,

 "They lived happily ever after"

and the following quarter century warning

that they'll be lucky to make it through the weekend.

Possibly now we are entering a third era,

in which the movies will be sounding a note of cautious optimism: You know, it just might work.

§  Interview in The Los Angeles Times (1989-07-27) regarding her screenplay for When Harry Met Sally

………………………………..

She said that in 1989. When I was 22.  By then, I’d fallen utterly in love with Meg Ryan, as any red blooded movie addict such as I should have. A bubbly sweet smart blonde, a goofball you cannot resist imagining chattering with . You try it out on your female friends, and it works…

  meg33

Nora, thanks for Meg. What she represents… the idea of a lifelong ‘galpal’ with whom a sensitive male can confide without fear of misunderstanding.Freedom is not an easy thing to achieve, when you talk to women. They seem to be very suspicious of your sex, indeed…but when one trusts you? It is impossible to describe what a lift that can be. Might even make a man wanna be a better man!

……………………………………………

Remember this conversation? I daresay it is  still going on, everywhere…

Harry: You realize of course that we could never be friends.

Sally: Why not?

Harry: What I'm saying is — and this is not a come-on in any way, shape or form — is that men and women can't be friends because the sex part always gets in the way.

Sally: That's not true. I have a number of men friends and there is no sex involved.

Harry: No you don't.

Sally: Yes I do.

Harry: No you don't.

Sally: Yes I do.

Harry: You only think you do.

Sally: You say I'm having sex with these men without my knowledge?

Harry: No, what I'm saying is they all want to have sex with you.

Sally: They do not.

Harry: Do too.

Sally: They do not.

Harry: Do too.

meg32

………………………………………………………………….

Oh so what?....If you wanna have sex with your galpal? Or guypal? Why wouldn’t you?

meg1

They say sex is all in the brain, and if brains are compatible & comfortable with each other, then the urge will arise. You can choose as a mature adult what to do with it. It is part of being human, and social.

There  comes the moral and emotional question of whether or not to pass the skin boundary with your ‘loved’ one… And,it is also a tactical question: do I dare to lose this confidante, this person who understands my soul better than I do sometimes?

“Sex changes everything,” is what those “in the know” warn…That is an old chesnut of wisdom that is general enough  to restrain one from following natural urges, indeed!

…………………………………………………………………..

Sex or not sex..that is the pressing question of Postmodern times..

What do "they " say?

“Sex is not everything,” they say. Also, they say, “Sex w/o love just aint worth it”

(I am the one who says the latter…….)

What is at stake here in this decision? Do we need even make it, or should we let Nature take its course?

..............................................

Depends on whether you view Nature as benevolent or insidious.

............................................

What  is  important is maintaining freedom! Self reliance! All that!

Freedom from undue pressures…

with the added delicious pleasure of major league flirting…soul-flirting, I call it:

Harry: It's very freeing. I can say anything to her.

Jess: Are you saying you can say things to her you can't say to me?

Harry: Nah, it's just different. It's a whole new perspective. I get the woman's point of view on things. She tells me about the men she goes out with and I can talk to her about the women that I see.

………………………………………….

The “woman’s point of view on things” is not as foreign as Mr. Billy Crystal, the Joker, makes it out to be, for every sane intelligent man knows he contains much that is feminine in himself. They call it anima. It is from the mother, the sister , the random encounters with the female sex, which are introjected, and built into a consolidated image of the Perfect Woman, so perfect that she is with you,.always..

And yes, women contain much that is male: animus. The daddy, the brothers, the discardered lovers...

………………………………………….

I think it’s probably more healthy to have a gal/guy-pal than to be addicted to internet porn...

Much better for the soul. Nothing against porn, but it gets old, quick. I hear…

………………………………………………

Stare at me in this faceless way, go mad with desire,

and rip my clothes off. It's terrific.

In my sex fantasy, nobody ever loves me for my mind.

The fantasy of rape — of which mine is in a kind of prepubescent sub-category —

is common enough among women and (in mirror image) among men.

§  Nora Ephron: Crazy Salad: Some Things About Women, Knopf Publishing, New York, 1975

…………………………………………………….

Rather controversial, mz. Ephron!

…………………………………………………….

(Listen, do you realize how early we are in the evolution of our society? It has only been 50 yrs since the Pill, when human nature was finally honored by its own honest scientific brainwork: we are the only species that has eschewed ‘estrus’, and is always, always, at least potentially, sexually receptive.

I suppose that is why we are also the most dangerous species, ever.)

……………………………………………….

I am continually fascinated at the difficulty intelligent people have in distinguishing what is controversial from what is merely offensive.

§  "Barney Collier's Book," Esquire (January 1976); republished in Scribble, Scribble (1978), ch. 10

 ...........................................................

I often wonder what a guy gal-pal meeting of the minds could lead to, besides solving the issues of this idiotic War of the Sexes, and reassuring, in a small way, that not all men are bad...

and that all women are not, either.

these are serious issues, i think................

But maybe they have a fun outcome.

I love this. This illustrates how she changed. Yes, born to priveledge and all, but 1. that doesn't mean she has nothing to offer or say 2. she did go through the evolution anybody would. Starting out full of edgy, insightful observations about the very society she'll end up happily ensconced in. Cycle of life. I hear a story about Eric Clapton once being criticized for dressing well, not just jeans and tee shirt. Eric says back to the criticism, I've been in my field for over 20 years. I've made a ton of money, and I've grown up. I'd look like a true git to be always schlumping around, now wouldn't I? or something like that.

You touch on so many great themes of hers here. Thanks for your sensibilities. r
thanks, delia.... 'themes' are what i love best.
when an icon dies, we must discover for ourselves why
we grieve more
than when some anonymous person dies..

some people lend credence to the human race..
One of my favorite scenes in "When Harry Met Sally" is the one at the Metropolitan Museum of Art when Billy Crystal ad libs that bit about pepper and paprika. "Waiter, there is too much pepper on my paprikash." Her movies were fun.
billy was a 'silly'..
he paved the way for we earnest men indeed.
thanks, ERICA
Thanks for this, James, it is a very thoughtful tribute and also comment on the differences between the sexes.
I always found her to be profound in her articulation of human behavior. Above all, I think she asked us to be forgiving of mistakes made by those we love.
James, I do not like Meg Ryan at all, but how odd, I have seen all her movies, and of Nora Ephron's as well.

You have made a great work here James, giving so many insight, and your title says it all. Trully, Nora gave a lot in our emotional evolution, as you say. Having ended this dialoque for instance is a great hit, cause this could go on for...
Sally: They do not.

Harry: Do too.

Sally: They do not.

Harry: Do too.....

Rated, with thank you for sharing!!!!
cc…thank u. a lot of differences ,sure. That is what should make it fun, yes?

Razzle…no progress in this life we have been granted, except thru forgiveness, yes!!!

Stahi..that do not! Do too! Thing we guys and gals got is the very crucible of fun, understanding, and often..great sex. And after the sex, a forgiving tolerance for the man /woman there. It is a glorious thing..
"I think it's probably more healthy to have a gal/guy-pal than to be addicted to internet porn..."

If that's not a line in a movie, it should be.
well maybe it will be someday, jl. after my, haw, discovery.
i really don't wanna be discovered is the problem.
i am shy.
but..often events conspire to make u a bit of a clever monkey.
that is the stage i dwell in...

porn is ultimately 'degrading' cuz it gets...so so..boring...
do not quote me on that!!
I always admired Meg Ryan until she, like so many other women who cannot deal with getting older, had cosmetic surgery. Poor Meg! She now looks like a gargoyle.

What's this have to do with Nora Ephron? Nothing, I guess. Just babbling.
James, as you already know, since reading my latest work, When Harry met Sally, contributed a lot to my emotional evolution, and my ( thinkable ) funny ways.

I love Nora, she gave so much, in so many character issues.

For instance, what one can say when in love...

""Harry Burns: I've been doing a lot of thinking, and the thing is, I love you.
Sally Albright: What?
Harry Burns: I love you.
Sally Albright: How do you expect me to respond to this?
Harry Burns: How about, you love me too.
Sally Albright: How about, I'm leaving. ""

She cleary understood, the ununderstandable communication of our times.

""Harry Burns: You were going to be a gymnast.
Sally Albright: A journalist.
Harry Burns: Right, that's what I said. ""

And she gaves us a way on being unhatable

""Sally Albright: You see? That is just like you, Harry. You say things like that, and you make it impossible for me to hate you. ""

And one of the true whys of love and the need of the other...

""Marie: Tell me I'll never have to be out there again.
Jess: You'll never have to be out there again.""

I am a 'When Harry met Sally'', specialist, and I trully loved your work, James !!!

Okay, so I read some Nora Ephron quotes:
To celebrate her life and remind ourselves that youth is fleeting, here is a quote from her 2006 book, I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Reflections on Being a Woman. We hope it inspires you to celebrate your Summer. "If anyone young is reading this, go, right this minute, put on a bikini, and don't take it off until you're 34."
Maybe I will put one ON when I am 34, but I appreciate her sentiment.

"I try to write parts for women that are as complicated and interesting as women actually are." YEAH BABY!

"In my sex fantasy, nobody ever loves me for my mind." YEAH BABY AGAIN!

"Insane people are always sure that they are fine. It is only the sane people who are willing to admit that they are crazy." Ahem....

"Whenever I get married, I start buying Gourmet magazine." OMG! I'm starting to cook!

Okay-she was a great lady!
I see Art and I are the only two males to venture here. Thank you, Art. If you hadn't been here I mighta turned around and left, even tho I like Jim's take on most things but I am in no mood or condition to talk the talk here in the boudoir, so to speak, especially with Jim doing such a fine job on his own. Art, wanna go grab a beer?
Oh, well, I just saw Keiko's YEAH BABY regarding Nora's comment about nobody ever loving her for her mind. That so much balderdash. The mind is the sexiest thing either man or woman has. Of course it helps to have decent physical proportions and regular features and energy and the right pheromones, but I could get those theoretically, at least some day, in an android. Nosirreebob. One of old chestnuts we guys are still reassured by now and again is the one about it's not the size that matters it's how you use it. Well, mind doesn't just mean knowledge. The most attractive women I know have good minds, but what's more important, they know how to use them.
I have never watched any of her movies but I do believe men and women should have friends of the opposite sex. A mind should have access to as many different perspectives as it can acquire.
Rated.
This connects JME :

"some people lend credence to the human race.."
Great job here, James. I think Meg is at her best when reciting Nora's words. This weekend I'm having an Ephron-thon, remembering all her great work.
Ish, great idea. Nora weekend.

Also, some do, yes. I think the human race can be won. One man’s opinion.

Scyla: perspectives are of utmost importance.

Matt: keiko is a big nerd brainiac. Thanks to you and art for venturing into the , ha, boudoir.

Keiko, meg? Did you see her in that really really sexy movie where she was utterly surprised by her lover’s skill with his tongue/ha. She was so bubbly and cute and smart back in the days when a shy boy like me needed that.. a goofy head….a dumb blonde? Not hardly………………………I didn’t know about the ‘work’ she had done. Oh well. There will always be 1980/90’s meg.

ART: when i make my movie, this line will be in it:
"When rabbit ears left TV I junked my Boob Tube."
olga, you actually inspired this piece, with yrs.............thank u . xo
