For Stephen Hawking on his 70th b-day, advice on wimmin

Rate: 20 Flag

  A

Stephen Hawking is due to celebrate his 70th birthday on Sunday

with a public symposium entitled "The State of the Universe"

at the University of Cambridge's Centre for Theoretical Cosmology.

…………………………………………………………….

I am fascinated by this English fellow Stephen Hawking,

who shares my personal “life goal”:

… a complete understanding of the universe,

why it is as it is and why it exists at all.”

………………………………………….

From Yahoo.com

When New Scientist magazine asked "Brief History of Time" author Stephen Hawking what he thinks about most, the Cambridge University professor renowned for unravelling some of the most complex questions in modern physics answered: "Women. They are a complete mystery."

AA

……………………………………………..

Hawking and I agree on this, certainly...

Here is where Hawking and I disagree:

The human race is just a chemical scum on a moderate-sized planet, orbiting around a very average star in the outer suburb of one among a hundred billion galaxies. We are so insignificant that I can't believe the whole universe exists for our benefit. That would be like saying that you would disappear if I closed my eyes.

§  From an interview with Ken Campbell on the 1995 show Reality on the Rocks: Beyond Our Ken

………………………………………………..

yes but you know damn well, Sir, that it could be true.

And what if it is?

That this universe is ours, for our benefit?

................................................................

Hawking has done fine fine work.

He has done mighty theoretical work regarding black holes.

But I suspect him of being a logical positivist.

 ...................................................................

Logical Positivism: a philosophy that combines empiricism

the idea that observational evidence is indispensable for knowledge—

with a version of rationalism

incorporating mathematical and logico-linguistic constructs and deductions of epistemology

this means he believes only what he can see,

but...he also

believes what his head can do with what he sees.

………………………………………………………..

I dunno if I am right about that. Just a suspicion.

If I am right, I must take him with a grain of salt, his theories.

…………………………………………………………

Stephen Hawking is severely disabled by a motor neurone disease

known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS),

Lou Gehrig's disease.

Hawking's illness is markedly different from typical ALS

because if confirmed Hawking's case would make for

the most protracted case ever documented.

……………………………………………………….

He describes himself as lucky despite his disease.

Its slow progression has allowed him time to make influential discoveries

and has not hindered him from having, in his own words,

"a very attractive family."[

When his wife, Jane, was asked why she decided to marry a man

with a three-year life expectancy, she responded,

"Those were the days of atomic gloom and doom, so we all had a rather short life expectancy."

A

That was back in 1965. Jane stuck with him til 1991. Then he married his nurse, but that marriage

ended badly…

……………………………………………………

Jane said Stephen is an atheist. He sounds more like a Deist to me, when he says,

the universe is governed by the laws of science.

The laws may have been decreed by God, but God does not intervene to break the laws.

…………………………………………..

So he is a Deist Logical Positivist, I think.

……………………………………………

Women are kinda like black holes, sometimes, Stephen, y’know?

Classically, it can be shown that information crossing the event horizon of a black hole

 is lost to our universe,

and that thus all black holes are identical

( beyond their mass, electrical charge and angular velocity (the "no hair theorem").)

The problem with this theorem is that it implies the black hole will emit

the same radiation regardless of what goes into it,

and as a consequence that if a pure quantum state is thrown into a black hole,

an "ordinary" mixed state will be returned.

This runs counter to the rules of quantum mechanics

and is known as the black hole information paradox.

………………………………………………..

There are black holes at the center of galaxies, I have heard told.

“regions of spacetime from which nothing, not even light, can escape…

called "black" because theyt absorb

all the light that hits the horizon, reflecting nothing…”

…………………………………………………

I think I may have given you a clue as to further research on cosmic stuff, like women.

Read your works with a metaphorical eye.

e.g: At the center of a black hole as described by general relativity lies a gravitational singularity, a region where the spacetime curvature becomes infinite.

……………………………………..

Those infinite curves a gal can produce, in mind and body…worth a cosmological treatise…

………………………………………….

Deism and Logical Positivism I eschew. They are for intellectual warriors.

Blake:

“To the Deists” Chapter 3, “Jerusalem”;

“ Man  is born a specter…& requires a new Selfhood continually & must continually be

Changed into his direct contrary”

…………………………………

Hawking:

If we do discover a complete theory, it should in time be understandable in broad principle by everyone, not just a few scientists. Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists, and just ordinary people, be able to take part in the discussion of the question of why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason — for then we would know the mind of God.”

In honor of the Poststudman, Hawkings was his hero. If were to to believe in a religion, which I don't, it would be Deism. The closest thing to nothing, without being an atheist ~
He is great, no doubt, but LOL at the one about women, the mystery...
deism well described by you, scanner, the closest thing
to Nothing.

But Nothingness is the key.

An atheist or agnostic can embrace Nothingness.

Nothing aint nothing. It is a void pregnant with possibility.
It is there at the center of this wild movie
we make of our lives. It is nourishing.
Deep deepest sleep, beyond dreams..
where u go every night...
All this black hole talk has my head swimmin'.
What does that Hawking know about women?
RRated.
Patrick, yeah..i mean, a genius gotta know
a little bit about women, he can't say they are a huge mystery.
Women are here to stay.
One must never ignore them while theorizing.
Women as black holes? Perhaps.
James, this stuff is pretty much over my head, but I so enjoy reading your writing about it. I like your enthusiasm for this subject. It makes me try to understand. You make it interesting. I think Hawking would like to know you and talk with you. I do.
erika...the black hole is a physical cosmological
phenomenon that Mr.(Sir?) hawking has spent his life
investigating, and at the end of his investigations it will remain
a mystery, but it is ONLY PHYSICAL, like electrons and muons.

the universe is human because
the universe made humanity, its greatest achievement.
miguela, sure why not. Metaphorically only, though.
Women are women first and foremost.
Firechick, Hawking has boring public functions to attend.
They will all bow and scrape at his genius.
i hope he has SOMEONE to talk to,
a guy friend, about the chicks.
"And what if it is?

That this universe is ours, for our benefit?"

If this were true, it would be the end. of. the. universe. This is the argument used by the so-called "wise use" movement in regard to the earth. That God made the earth for man to use, to benefit.

I take comfort in being small, being insignificant, being a speck who gets to have a life and experiences but who doesn't really matter.

Otherwise, there's way too much pressure.
It's okay to disagree.
Albert Einstein too?
He had tryst with gals.
I read an autobiography.
Albert had two-affairs +.
Two affairs were with both:
`
The daughter and mother.
His alibi isn't on a up/up.
`
Deliver us from temptation.
`
I read ref his women views.
Maybe? Just misunderstood?
I am not 'into' this astronomer.
Star gazer? I am nor aware of:

Did you know that some people think that Hawking's wife and other people in his life were abusing him for years? He had several rather odd accidents under their 'care,' and if you pay very close attention to the interviews in the Brief History of Time documentary by Errol Morris, there is a not-so-nice edge to their take on his atheism (or agnosticism or whatever you want to call his hostility to the personal-God idea). It doesn't help that the technology he uses to communicate is being outpaced by his condition. Anyway, happy birthday, Stephen. And I hope somebody comes up with a new way for you to talk to us--we need you now.
KERI: yes but ..what if it is true?
i take advantage of my miniscule presence & effect
on the cosmos, too...but the universe does not work by
human logic, unless..well, unless it does...then we gotta
delve scientifically into all the weird laws of nature to get
clues to our own being. And yep, that is, argh, responsibility...
I have never found the time to read Hawking- just one article. I know nothing about philosophies- just what other writers refer to. You just amaze me. So versatile in your knowledge and you share it so that I learn a bit here and there. I could not imagine being trapped in a body that wasn't reliable, or for the most part working. He's fascinating and as a mother watching her little girl turn into a woman I think females are vastly complex, too- like black holes.
to disagree w/Albert Einstein
( tryster with gals) is fine.
“In the past it never occurred to me that every casual remark of mine
would be snatched up and recorded. Otherwise I would have crept further into my shell.”
 p. 22 - Letter to Carl Seelig (25 October 1953).

`
Deliver us from temptation.
Temptation is secular scientist soup of a universe, which Whitehead
describes as buzzing humming nonsense going nowhere fast.
He a philosopher w/ own theory of relativity. Disagreed respectfully w/Einstein.

“There are no whole truths; all truths are half-truths. It is trying to treat them as whole truths that plays the devil.” Said he.

Who knows what for certain.

Very much so…

Who placed thee ring around a duck?

Same one as made the tiger tiger burning bright in the forests of the Night.

It doesn't help that the technology he uses to communicate
is being outpaced by his condition.
True. But he likes the tech he got, I hear…he likes the voice he got..

Anyway, happy birthday, Stephen.
And I hope somebody comes up with a new way for you to talk to us--we need you now.
We need him indeed.
He said”So next time someone complains that you have made a mistake,
tell him that may be a good thing.
Because without imperfection, neither you nor I would exist.
MANGO
So versatile in your knowledge and you share it so that I learn a bit here and there.
Yes that is me.but…that is all of us….isnt it?

as a mother watching her little girl turn into a woman
I think females are vastly complex, too- like black holes.

I think so too.
Stephen Hawking is an enigma himself. Of all the mysteries of the universe, woman remain a mystery to him. This does not surprise me. Many before him have asked, "what do women want?" I have to say being a member of this mysterious tribe is just fine with me. Surely, it beats the in-your-face sexploitation rampant in our culture these days.

The other thoughts, deism etc. is beyond my grey matter at this time as I am hungry. Though Grace said "feed your head", she may have just finished a nice meal of munchies. Still, you leave us with much food for thought! off for a bite ...
Fascinating, as usual, but you lost me in the comments when you said humans were the universe's greatest achievement. Given that humans are in the process of ruining earth, I find that hard to believe.
I have to run, but I'm going to come back to this tomorrow. I read the book and enjoyed it, although it didn't explain how we can travel to distant planets. Darn.
scarlett:
Grace was correct in advising headfood.
Relativity is relatively easy once
You commit the unscientific act of Thought Experiment,
Which is how Albert came up with it to begin with.

Things faster than they seem, timewise. IF they are happening really really fast.
Gravitation is? Built into the world.
Get on an elevator and plummet down.
Same thing.

What’s all this, now?
“being a member of this mysterious tribe is just fine with me. Surely, it beats the in-your-face sexploitation rampant in our culture these days.”

I think somehow …well… I cannot say it…but I shall….
Knowing men, knowing women…
Uh..some of the sexploitation is due to women.
There I said it.

And so what? Do what ya gotta do, right?

Or …?
correction: stuff approaching the speed of light,
which is the speed of the brain,
is where things are slower.
PHYLLIS: the earth will survive us, if it comes to that.
How do you “ruin” a planet?
Well..it is relative…you ruin it because no longer will it put up with us.
It will survive.
As will bacteria.

Other stuff too maybe..

But..again…
Is that the best a planet can do?

Tough questions.

A man’s measure, or a woman’s , is in no way qualitatively inferior to an earthworm’s.
Or a cockroach’s. or a , um..slime mold. Or a mushroom! (sorry, artjames)

Sorry, my personal theory.

The greeks said we are the “measure of all things…”

It just might be so.
sarah,
look forward to seeing you back.
distant planets are a long long time away.
we gotta either
1. go faster than light & get there quicker..or
2.put ourselves into a suspended animation state
and arrive there fresh and ready to fuck up
another planet, is
how i read it................................
Stephen Hawking is admirable and a freakin' genius. Me, I'm just sitting here eating a piece of homemade fudge someone brought over at Christmas catching up with my fellow OSer. What did my (somewhat) out of context comment mean? That personally, as a female, I'd rather identify with say, the elusive, 1940s "Dame" type of film noir woman (but one that don't take no crap from nobody) than the over-exploited personas in our faces 24/7 who may, as you say, sometimes sexploit themselves. Sometimes not. Or something like that. I'm not in my 'over analyze' mood right now as the fudge has just hit my blood sugar ...
Wow. I'm going to need to read this one twice. Maybe three times. Maybe even.......well, just don't expect a comment for a while.
scarlett, i just ate a lot of chili, so my blood sugar too
is demanding my brains to be quieted ..but..

'sometimes,' and also 'sometimes not' go together well in
a mind creating itself from the ground up, with
lovely suggestions here & there,
like from movies & whatnot,
dames and damsels and delicious abject buoyant vulnerablity,
and all in between,

etc...

yer eatin fudge while stephen hawking cannot chew?
shame on you!

i actually dont know if he can chew, or not.
i am pretending.

as for the black holes, they pull me in...
don't they you? or is it just a GUY thing?

JL: i am just glad you are reading it, that's all.
i would advise u to read the comments if ya wanna comment.
that is what i do once i have posted.
to revisit my brainchild , be it totally intellectually off base
or irrelevant or just...as this one is...
sardonically snipingly sweet...

is not a job i would make my worst enemy
(me) do...
I'm just glad the universe produced someone like Hawking.
i must say, i am surprised no one picked up
on the , ah, "no hair" theory... re. black holes...
I enjoyed this. I always laugh when men think women are mysterious. We are really quite similar to men, save for some hormonal weirdness that is different. I really had to laugh with the comparison of women to black holes. Seems very vaginal.
As for Hawkings. I loved his work when I was a teenager. He brought physics to where an ordinary person could grasp it.
DEB: YES! exactly! that should be his proof of
something! well put!
LUCY: as a gentleman, I was not gonna mention the vaginal connection.
I let it lay out there, unspoken, til you spoke it.
(heavens, yes…talk about a cosmological
Treatise needing to be written…!)

A black hole is, they say, speculatively, a passage to another whole new universe.
Dear Emmerling;

you writing came on top of my reading
into Konx om Pax, the law which says:

to be shed of egotistical desires
is to be in perfect harmony with Nature
(if that is what you want)

Do Thou What Thou Wilt
(a race of people with no word for 'god')

and an ethical code

if perfect harmony with nature
is a benefit
an ethical code
with no word for 'god' then

"why it is as it is and why it exists at all"
is word-less too.

but what goes on in a society without these words?
All kinds of grand stuff.

Tell me of one in harmony:
here's one:

If you can celebrate the futile, fatalistic search,
then so much more are you in harmony with Nature.

It is good, Emmerling, to bring up this stuff
(compile and publish).

note: Any thought of god/no thought of god.

note: We do not have attribute good works to god.

note: There is the question of insignificance;
(Stephen Hawkings addressing 'benefit' )
he falters in his estimation unless ...
no he falters: his is bounded universe-think.
Here in Helsinki cockroaches are, to my observation, non-existent. But I grew up and lived in New York, which is a city of cockroaches unfortunately infected by humans. But cockroaches are tolerant and find people can be useful so the let them exist. One dark and windy Christmas Eve, back when I lived in New York, when animals are permitted to converse with humans, I was approached by a somewhat tipsy cockroach who had stumbled through a small puddle of brandy and was in a quasi philosophical mood.

“Why, “he queried, “do you suppose the universe was created for us cockroach folk and then allowed so many damned humans to come and corrupt it? After all, God created cockroaches in his image and only kicked us out of Eden when a female roach named Marilyn took a bite out of a piece of forbidden cheddar cheese set aside for a Godly snack and not for us common roaches. Humans, of course, have a hidden knack for building kitchens at a Godly implanted impulse to provide habitation for us common cockroach folk and when we die our souls will each fly off to that great kitchen in the sky. But humans are getting out of hand. Some of them even never learn to cook so their kitchens are almost uninhabitable. It’s a mess. Why did God create humans (and so damned many of them) and made them so useless in a universe created, obviously, for cockroaches?”

I could see he had a point and although I attempted to indicate where he had things a bit mixed up he scoffed. Anybody who has ever suffered the immense disdain of a sophisticated but inebriated cockroach with a nasty sneering laugh will understand, after this philosopher moved away to discover a private place to pee and sleep it off, why I had to undergo several years of psychotherapy to regain my normal hubris.
You could have simplified the entire article to say "Women are black holes." Or you could have made it more accessible to the few people that still know how to read by saying "Women are like dementors. They suck all joy, hope and life out of the universe." See how easy it is to cut to the meat of the argument?
Head like a hole, black as your soul, I'd rather die, than understand quantum mechanics (or read a women's magazine).
It's been remarked that those who claim to understand quantum physics merely indicate thereby that they do not. I'm reasonably sure your wish for dying will be fulfilled.
Nobody really knows nothin' - and those who say they do thereby indicate they don't. This is especially true, of course, of quantum theory and all the rest of that crazy stuff. BUT...men who say they don't understand women are annoying idiots.
In general, we spend most of our time annoying idiots but it does appear unfair to characterize all women as idiots.
Just kidding. As a poet I enjoy playing with verbs and adjectives and English is a jungle.
Jan (sez she, shaking fist) I'll get you for that!
What an ode to Mr. Hawking, James. I think he'd be honored. I'd love to spend an hour or even a minute in his head to think like he thinks and see the world through his eyes. Not necessarily to be close to his brilliant thoughts either. I'd like to know what it feels like to have such a will to live despite being in a body like that, to feel the rush of excitement he must feel on waking every day and doing what he does in spite of the fact that others take care of most of his day to day living for him. He can't even enjoy food; can't enjoy any of the sensual pleasures that so many of us take for granted. But he does have that mind & the universe to escape to.

As for women, are we really such a mystery, even to a man like Hawking? What surprises me here is that no woman has said anything about the mysteries of men, particularly the kind like Mr. Neutron, who seems to have defied its massive gravitational pull and returned from the dense and lightless depths of a black hole.
