The Pill - by Matt McGinn - 1968
"I wed when I was seventeen,
I hadnae many brains,
Says I, "the very thing to do
Is fill the hoose with weans,"
But when I got the room full,
I went tae see the priest,
Tae tell him my man Wullie,
was behavin' like a beast!"
The Pill, the Pill, I'm pining for the Pill,
I'll never have any more because
They're going to bless the pill . . . "
My Uncle Matt McGinn wrote that song back in the 1960s, and the Catholic Church was just as big a chunk of chewing gum in the wheels of progress then as it is now. It's probably a good thing for the Church he didn't live to see the Paedophile Priest scandals; the church's oppression of women was one thing, but its spiritual and physical abuse of children would have been more than he could stand!
Uncle Matt and my mother were only two of nine McGinn kids that survived their Glasgow Calton childhood; my grannie spent most of her life pregnant or nursing "weans." Here's what she told my mother, and what my mother told me: "If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament!"
I think that about sums it up.
