Bio
I designed transhouston.com, tgctr.org, tgdor.org and my own site, cristanwilliams.com . I was born in 1972. I've been to the other side of the world and back. I enjoy coding sites. I have been friends with murderers and murder victims alike. I opened a homeless shelter. I was a program manager at a social service agency and now I run a transgender foundation. Though I used to eat almost nothing but meat, I've been a vegetarian for years. Though I used to smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day, I haven't smoked in years. Though I used to smoke a ton of pot and loved dropping acid, I haven't used or drank in 20 years. I tend to love Asian style for it's simplicity. I had sex reassignment surgery in 2004. I love living alone. My life is really, really good. Other people did their best to make my life hard while I was in school. My father disowned me. I am a published writer. I'm a Theravada Buddhist. I've tried to kill myself before. I am not a Republican. I have run both food banks and clothing assistance programs. I've known several people who did kill themselves. I've been homeless more than once. I want to learn more Spanish and Thai. Some people hate me enough to send me death threats. I have had everything from rocks to beer bottles thrown at me. I was asked to speak to a crowd of several thousand people - and did it. I was featured as a "hero" in a magazine (LOL!).

Post-Celebration Wrap Up

Diversity

One of the most satisfying things about the event was the absolute diversity of those celebrating the significance of having the only TG Center of its kind in the world right here in Houston, Texas. We had every kind of transgender person - we had transgender kids and parents of transgenders. We had politiciansleaders and judges there. We had people just starting their transition as well as those who had recently come out of stealth. We had friendsfamily, parents and the kids of transgender parents. A few groups met during the day and new community groups found the inspiration to form (Go TG Parents Group!).

Volunteers

This historic event could not have happened without the help of a small army of volunteers. Thanks to all of you who shopped, cleaned, toiled in the heat, cooked, prepared, entertained, provided rides and provided goods, food, services and technical support! Specifically, thanks to: Diego Pena, Mitch SellarsMyke Jackson, Darin Quintero, Lou Weaver, Courtney HensleeFatima Gafoor (for loaning us the freezer), Alexis Leather (for dropping off her cooler), Letty Arteaga (for helping with the grill), Nick & Donna Lawrence (for making pasta salad), Lou’s mom (for making potato salad), and Finn Williams (for making cheesy potatoes & bringing his x-box).

More Thanks

Also, thanks to David “The Bread Guy” for donating the buns. Thanks to Silver Eagle Distributing for donating the keg of Budweiser. Thanks to Jerry with Little Debbie for donating all the snacks. Also, thanks to Kirk & Neil at Dreyer’s Ice Cream for donating all the fruit bar popsicles.

Noon Until 11 PM

The day brought more than 125 folks through the doors of the Transgender Center. By then end of the night, we had served over 300 plates of food, had a few meetings and an awards ceremony that was so historic that Jolanda Jones left a meeting with Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee in order to participate. Again, ABC channel 13 was on the scene to cover it all! In the middle of the celebration, we helped people get hooked up with medical care, psychological care and meetings in addition to preventing a few people from becoming homeless because that is what the TG Center is all about!

Before the night was out, not only did the Mayor of Houston, Bill White declare that July 25th was “Transgender Center Day” in Houston, Texas, the Vice-Mayor, Sue LovellCity of Houston Comptroller and Mayoral candidate Annise Parker and Houston City Council Member, Jolanda “Jo” Jones presented the TG Center with their own proclamations. To top it off, The Sate of Texas House of Representatives presented the TG Center with a proclamation from State Representative Ellen Cohen.
