At kissing distance
we love attentive eyes
the fold on the jaw near the ear
the slope of a shoulder
the velvet feel of a cheek
we love as if breath and skin and beat
are one
age and color and plumbing
disappointment and grief and raw feeling
all that is wrong and worn and weary in us
flutters to nothing
we quicken
at kissing distance
