Lorraine Berry lives in the Fingerlakes region of New York, although it's her transplanted home. On weekends, she can be heard throughout the area, cheering on her beloved Manchester City F.C. When not writing at Does This Make Sense? or Talking Writing, she can be found hiking with her two dogs, hanging out with her two daughters, eating what her beloved Rob has cooked for her, or teaching creative writing at a small college in the area.

I only take photos with my iPhone as I hike, so these are just my attempts to document the natural year. I didn't caption any photos. I wanted the year to speak for itself. If you have questions, please ask.

Happy Solstice to you all!
This is something special. The title is perfect. ~r
it spoke beautifully. you have a good eye.

I keep seeing spring coming. that's how I keep winter bearable. I see it as a frozen incubator.
I wish I could scroll through winter as quickly as I did here. Lovely, lovely pics.
Lorraine, I am impressed that these were all shot with an iPhone! That's a great look at one year's progression through the four seasons. The gorges in your area are wonderful sights. A Happy Winter Solstice to you, as well!
And a happy solstice back at you! Thanks for the virtual walks, hope to make it real one day.
Thank you for reminding me.

That woodpecker is as pretty as a big flower on that stalk!
gorgeous compilation, lorraine. i get my east coast/winter/snow (especially) fix from pics you and others post. plus the flowers that grow there and not here and that beautiful woodpecker. so thanks for all of it. :)
Beautiful! And, I love taking photos with the iPhone, although yours are much better. I need to upgrade.
Great pictures. And in the spring and summer ones, all that green and colour! No snow here, but it's grey and brown - no colour at all.
You took these with your iPhone? Fantastic. When I take a picture with my iPhone, all I get are these somewhat dark, avant garde shots of my index finger.
One day I must live in a place that has more than 2 seasons. These are gorgeous.
I have an old iPhone. The one exception to this is that Rob took the photo of the woodpecker; I can't remember if it was with his iPhone or the camera.
Some day, I'd like to learn to photograph things. As I said, I hike year-round, and I like to document the changes. It helps tonight, as it is raining and unseasonably warm (44 degrees) that spring will come again. All of it to cycle through. But scrolling through the year makes me realize how fast it all goes.
Can I also just say that:
I feel so lucky to live in such a gorg(es)eous part of the world.
and
I feel so blessed to have the OS community to come home to on nights like tonight.
A beautiful photo-documentary, Lorraine. Nice to view them while it's raining here too, and the furnace is whirring. Thanks for sharing.

A nearly perfect narrative of color and form. You chose the order wisely and it tells the story....
Beautiful. Oh Robin's Egg, how I miss thee!
by the by, your new photo is really good!
I loved this natural year in photos. Thank you so much for the journey!
You obviously enjoy photographing nature and things. Why don't you just bring along a camera to use? Just curious....
Life: I tend to travel light. Water bottles, iPhone for emergencies, dog leashes, bug spray. I'm afraid of dropping a camera in water, or losing it. I keep promising myself I'm going to take photography lessons so that I can use a camera. I used to have Nikon (pre-digital) and had to learn all the settings myself. I miss that camera. But my iPhone is "handy."
especially love the mud dogs! nice year...
Just when I start to get all snooty about the West being heaven on earth someone puts up some great snaps pointing out that beauty is everywhere on earth.

Really, though, F.L.W., you should invest in a decent camera so you can blow some of these up. You have a great eye for subject material but you're holding yourself back. Get a good Nikon single lens reflex digital camera.

Thanks for the reminder!!!
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!! So beautiful, I miss it sooo much!!!

Not the raw air and coldness, just the snow....I grew up in N.J. and to us Jersey boys New York State is God's Country!!!! Here in the Sunshine St. we're looking at 79 degrees as a Christmas day high. I miss the change of seasons as well and thank you so much for taking me there. The pictures were absolutely beautiful, R
Nice seasonal wrap-up, Lorraine. And I'm an iPhone photographer as well, and love the chance to snap away!
I really enjoyed this turning of the seasons. You live in such a beautiful place. Congrats on the well-deserved EP.
Your eye is wonderful, Lorraine. Now I recall how much I loved visiting my sister when she studied where you live.

r.
Is that a beehive, seventh pic from the bottom?
Gorgeous, thank you so much for taking these and sharing. I miss having real seasons here, and only catch glimpses when I travel. As it has been a wettish winter here, I suspect our Spring (starts in Feb) will be lush and green, the mountains less brown. I would trade that out for some real trees and woodland flora, any season, right now.
A beautiful walk through the year. Thanks! R
Catholic girl: no, I'm afraid it's the largest wasp's nest I've ever seen.
Lorraine
Right now, we're not having winter, and I'm getting afraid. It's Dec. 22, and this morning, I pulled ticks off one of my dogs and myself. I already have Lyme disease, and unless we have a cold, hard winter, the ticks are going to come back in droves.

It's one of the drawbacks of living in a place so beautiful. Sometimes, Mother Nature isn't so nice.
I love all these photos with your iPhone - wouldn't be able to pick one as "best." I have a digital camera, but since I always have my iPhone handy, I use it for photos and never get out the camera. You did good!
This is really something quite remarkable. Beautiful.
Lovely nature walk through the year. I'm an Iphone photographer too. Rated.
What a great idea! Thank you for sharing it with us!
It is so fine and self explanatory and more. Thanks for the journey of a year so quickly. I hope time does not pass this fast when one gets to their eighties!
What a beautiful area you live in! Thanks for taking us through the year. Happy Solstice to you to!
Thank you for sharing this photo essay with us. I wish I were back in a place where they have all four season. All I have is really hot and not so hot. R
The year definitely speaks for itself. Thanks for sharing its beauty.
Pleasant photos. As a birder, I envy the Redhead! Congrats on the EP
