It Was a Very Dark Knight- Aurora Colorado

Rate: 29 Flag

Last night inside "a very darkened theatre" in Denver Colorado 14 people were killed and 71 people injured during the midnight premiere of Batman, The Dark Knight Rises.  The movie had barely begun before James Holmes, a 24-year-old-man wearing a gas mask and in possession of a rifle and handgun was arrested for the death and injuries he inflicted on the movie going audience.

Police chief Dan Oates admitted to the media that the Holmes also had made mention of explosives stored at his home and they had evacuated the area. Some of us like to believe that watching Batman and Superman get the job done right, is lifting,  not only because because of their super powers, but because of their belief in justice and truth for all.

Have our fantasies been broken once again this morning?

                         batman_logo

Batman apparently has no superpowers and gets the job done.

Holmes entered the movie theatre with a  shotgun and a bulletproof west, and nobody suspected anything?  He gained entrance by kicking in an emergency door - and no one heard that? Or if the door had been open why didn't anyone notice?

Batman is a great detective and convinces others to do the same to fight crime.

In theory to some of the American public,  all the moviegoers should have been armed as well, and opened fire on the gunman at the first sign of trouble. Let's not even go close to the argument that if everyone had been armed with a gun;  things would have been better. If the people in the theater had been armed, there would have been even more panic and confusion and the death toll would have been higher.

Batman does not follow the rules and uses fear in his enemies as a weapon.

A three month old at University Hospital is the youngest victim and it's incredible how many people are in denial about the relationship between gun culture, free gun availability, and killing sprees.  Imagine the fear Holmes has inflicted on others for the rest of their lives.

Batman has some cool stuff like a car, and some cool gadgets.

Between this incident, the Tucson shooting and the fact that over 2,000 guns cross into Mexico each day to fuel the drug wars in that country; there needs to be a renewed discussion about gun control in this country.

How did this obviously deranged man get a gun, and please explain how weapons are a benefit to society?   Come on America;  it's time to give this crap up! Guns are not cool!

Batman is a millionaire in real life and really hates violence

The gun did not put the thought of mass murder into that mans head. The gun as a tool enabled Holmes to efficiently execute his plan.

The Solution?

The right to sue the guns and ammo industry!

Batman has some attractive women around him like Catwoman and  sometimes admires their words.

Just another  result of a society steeped in physical violence, verbal violence,  and the culmination of hate, suspicion and doubt in this country. Michele Bachmann received the most tepid rebuke ever from fellow right wingers for her insane accusation of a  "Muslim Brotherhood"  sleeper cell in the State Department. I believe in freedom of speech, but hate speech should be swiftly dealt with.

In an eerie twist Jessica Ghawi/Jessica Redfield, an aspiring sportscaster who just missed being shot herself at the Toronto Eaton Centre in June was one of the twelve people killed at the Denver Theatre last night. Ghawi had written a blog post about surviving the shooting in Toronto, in which two people were killed and six others were injured.

Batman fights evil for the good of Gotham.

People can't own hand guns in many places in the world, but this nonsense continues to occur time after time in the U.S. because anyone can buy a gun.

Stock footage of the funerals and aftermath should now be available as there are too many nuts with easy access to guns. If guns had been illegal his only weapon last night would have been a knife. He might have stabbed only a few before he was caught, but instead 14 are dead and 71 wounded because of the capabilities of his weapon, not himself.

Sick, sick, sick. Never fear. We are Number 1 in the world in one area: we have more guns, per capita, than any other country. And we have more injuries and deaths by gunshot. Anyone see a relationship? What is the matter with us! What will it take for us as a society to wake up? We seem to be a society slowly commiting suicide by spreading fear and loathing for anyone different in looks, opinion, politics or religion. We are reaping the results.
Sometimes the world is a dark, dark cartoon.

r.
For reasons I don't know, this movie was already provoking extremely vehement reactions. Film critics who were less than ecstatic about the movie were being bombarded with a great number of extremely hateful, enraged comments on the internet. Reportedly the website Rotten Tomatoes closed comments on the film because of unprecedented lunacy and venom in comments, something they had never done before.
I heard that Donegal just like comments about gun control on other sites will be ignored.
Marsha. and many will argue with you
Jon... that is is
What a dark night for many in Colorado, and for our nation.
Well said. The thing is, when I woke up and found out about this, it occurred to me that in a gun toting society, where someone would get up and do this, where was the gun response from someone in theater? If they want it to be the wild west, then how does this guy get away with starting the shooting and no one fires back? That alone should give one pause. They all want to be able to defend themselves and have conceal and carry so they can be protected at all times and here is what happens...no response. The irony of it escapes no one.
Oh God. This is the first I've heard of this terrible and violent tragedy, Linda. The right to own guns in the U.S. is not a good "right" .... it's a wrong as far as I'm concerned.
Rush Limbaugh screams conspiracy for days about Bane in Batman being a reference to Romney's company Bain he used to go on a job-destroying rampage, and then a terrorist goes into a theater showing Batman and goes on a rampage murdering innocent Americans. Any connection?
We seem to see it in a similar light but me? I'm so goddam tired of hearing the hateful and divisive political crap that spawns this kind of hate that I am ready to join the Buddhists. We can't just start killing each other over religion and politics. How hard is it for people to understand that no god or political party can sanction murder? Is it so much to ask that we look at our neighbors and see another human being instead of another enemy to be slaughtered?
Rugrat// you said it
Sheila.. I cannot even imagine the bloodbath it could have been
Little Kate- I so agree
Surazeus- I was going to put that here actually as it crossed my mind a hundred times. Im trying not to think that once again Limbaugh was a cause of anger. He is just as well as detriment to society as guns.
Violence on TV, violence in sports, violence in words. Apparently violence and male macho crap is huge entertainment since we all know it's never effective in actually making life better.

Gun toting is more male macho B.S. and it's horrific when it gets to the point of this event. Not surprisingly the only attractive heroes who are entertainingly violent are those who live only on a screen. The ones in real life are always repulsive.

The US is emotionally and socially retarded in many ways.
A three month-old baby was at a late night showing of Batman?
My friend in Arizona is a sharp shooter. He maintains that if he was in a situation like that because he carries a weapon that he could have stopped the guy cold right in the beginning.
Funny how pro-gun people always talk about how people with guns could stop a rampage, yet they never do. Ever.
I've read reams of comments on other sites that are astonishingly pro-gun. I fear for this country.
Bleue.. many of you know I have to take this summer off due to family obligations but I just had to say something.. just had to.
Leave those guns on the screen.

DandyLion_ That too had me confused.
Zanelle:I hate hearing about gun anything.. Yesterday local police in a US town thought they had the man they were looking for at a private home and shot him. Ahh wrong house.

Surazeus- This was nothing but a tragedy all around
sweetfeet- NRA, Beck, the list goes on.. I am so anti gun and that is why I had to do this. I do have friends with other thoughts but I respect them but we both know how each other feels.
I read this, Linda, because I respect your work. Never in a million years would I have expected to find an attack on Michelle Bachmann, Rush Limbaugh, or any other Republican in your piece. It must be an election year, and nobody can think of anything else, not even for a moment, not even long enough to mourn for the victims and express sorrow without reference to some petty political agenda. Not rated, and you really ought to rethink this.
Arthur, I never attacked Limbaugh in my blog although I did think about it many times but thought better. When people spout hate speech democratic or republican or Joe Normal it encourages others to act out if they are not thinking properly.

People lost their lives last night because of craziness and it has to stop before more families lose their loved ones.
What is that Dylan song, "Everything is Broken"?

-r-

(snugs)
kid... I think Dylan knew everything. Did not like his voice but his words were great
Linda, I apologize for coming back at you, on your own blog. Normally I would not do that. but you seem to be suggesting that we must renounce free speech because someone might say something that has a pernicious effect on the mind of some crazy. First of all, we don't know what this lunatic has heard, or from where. Secondly, we cannot let the insane acts of our most hapless citizens dictate the behavior of the rest of us. If we do, then the inmates truly will have taken over.
"Stock footage of the funerals and aftermath should now be available as there are too many nuts with easy access to guns. If guns had been illegal his only weapon last night would have been a knife. He might have stabbed only a few before he was caught, but instead 14 are dead and 50 wounded because of the capabilities of his weapon, not himself."
Agree. But the NRA and its beholden congress always has a rationalization. That is why nothing much is said by anyone about the gun problem. Including the president.
Great post, you're right it had to be said. This might not be the best time to ask...can we trade our gun laws for your healthcare?

xoxo as always,
~J
I really have no words, except that my fear for this country grows daily./r
Arthur .. you now me better than that and I respect everyone's opinion and I encourage free speech on my blog.:) But there just seems to be way too much lunacy going on now. I cannot for one second watch Fox News without throwing a shoe at the TV. And I think I am semi sane.. although the jury is out.

Guns need more regulation or you will have sharp shooters everywhere soon. I agree one person should not be compared to millions of others, that is for sure.

Canada is not much better this week with a block party that 50 people were injured and two people shot. The shooter was apprehended within 24 hours and the guns came across the river from Buffalo.

I sometimes point fingers but for the love of God something has to be done here.
Lea, my mother in law just emailed me this..

Both parties are chicken when it comes to the NRA. I would love to see a politician running for office actually do what's right. Assault rifles/weapons, multi-shot repeaters, and the sale of multiple guns to the same person at the same time (who will then sell them in the parking lot for 3X the original price) has to be outlawed. Open carry is asking for trouble. Just as Travon Martin. Oh right.

Two policies have to be addressed to save this country from itself - campaign finance and gun control. Re gun control...this week, lots of talk. Next week, it will all be forgotten.

Start saving the footage
Joy on board.. clever.. Dalton McGuinty the permier of Ontario (governor) is making lots of cuts to the province's health care. He should be hung out to dry but you still dont have to pay.:)

Christine.. Ironic how the lady from the Toronto shootings got shot last night. My son said_ Final Destination (movie)
I'm fearing for America the way most of the rest of the world just plain fear America.

Interesting it's come back to Constitutional amendments, in this thread. Free speech = hate speech ; Hate speech = free speech, & your own quote :

"Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

This guy's idea of happiness was to blow away people in a theatre.
My understanding of happiness is it's not something you pursue, like a hunter pursues a deer ; more it's a given, if you're good, & deserving.

Great piece, Linda. I like the way you tied it together.
Dear Linda, I hadn't heard about this till I read your blog so left to go read news. Another "lone nut" with a gun...that's how it will be characterized, like Gabby Giffords' shooting. Nobody remembers the victims in a few years, but killers like Mark and Charlie and Jon and Lee Harvey get to be famous forever.
This was a total horror to wake up to this morning -- this shooter is two weeks older than my oldest son and has the same first name. I keep wondering how did the young man get to this point?? Why was he able to so easily buy a bunch of guns??

...and I was just telling Youngest at dinner last night all the reasons why I wouldn't let him go to the midnight showing of Dark Knight with a friend last night....Husband's gone, I was so tired, he almost wore me down...
Not that we're in Colorado, but who knew?
Excellent post, Linda.
I did hear that the door wasn't kicked in, it had been previously set ajar a bit -- this was planned out for awhile, it seems -- and the theatre-goers first thought he was part of the show, even after the tear gas canister was thrown, some thought so even after the first shots rang out...
Ai yi yi.
Those poor families.
I have a gun, several, and I like to shoot at ranges and I know a lot of people who do. That has absolutely nothing to do with this freak who walked into a theater and shot the place up. This is ridiculous and opportunistic.
And by the way, for those wondering, I work in the service industry, I go to school, I'm a political independent, and I'm studying in the sciences. So I'm not some kind of Red State weirdo. And don't be disingenuous try and say that you didn't imply all that about gun owners and collectors, it's quite obvious.
Kim- I did my own take on it.Thanks.. Broke up the usual summer chaos..:)
CCDarling..funny isnt it.How we forget and those who got injured never will and those that got killed are forgotten
Just thinking.. no one will ever back down in their thinking but you're right.. It could have been one of my sons. Seriously..

Sam: I don't back down from anything.. You like guns I don't and we will never agree. Sad to say its as simple as that.
@ Sam and Linda: I, for one, didn't read a single disingenuous word in this post. Linda, I know you don't need me to defend you, but I will say Sam, Linda just tells it like it is through her eyes.
You just disagree.
Linda not candid, not sincere?
Ha.
Thanks JT.. I speak from my hear as I am sure Sam does.. We just have different opinions.. but its the son thing and you scared me.. Man you have how idea how close you came.

JTBack to chaos.. I could use some help here..:) Hard Labour everywhere..:)
What a tragedy.
So many unstable people with too easy access to firearms.
The guy's booking photo smile reminds me of Loughner's.
Linda, your outrage is vicarious for all.
The shooting seems to be getting worse, and Life has become so insecure that we canthank God for each day we stay alive.
I like your comment and want to invest hope into it.

"Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
~r~
I disagree with your solution to this tragic nightmare. It has to do with the pervasive ignorant, fearful hatred in our society. To address the tools used by an insanely hateful individual rather than the causes that created the monster who used them is missing the point.
I agree with Sam. I have my .44 and I'll keep it safe and handy, thank you.

Also, it should be pointed out, before the feast of familiar gets too heavy, that most of the gun owners in this fast declining country are hunters--and have nothing whatsoever to do with this country's fast decline. If you took hunting out of the mix in most small towns in the Northern and Western states, things would be far grimmer economically even than they are at present. And look at who keeps winning elections in those areas and those states...look at Wisconsin and Michigan. So...this is not so smart as it pretends.
Ian.. and he cannot bring back these lives now .. its over
I agree Heidi

Chicken Maan.. There are more and more each day of these pervasive ignorant, fearful people with illegal guns in their hands. 70% of Oakland crimes are done with stolen guns. The gun used this week in Toronto with stolen guns. How was this man allowed to buy 3 guns? There has to be some sort of tighter laws.

Dr William Lee- I understand hunting as it is a necessity for some.. But owning multiple guns is not. Like I said I respect gun owners opinions but I have mine too.
Not wanting to get into a back and forth with anyone, but Dr. William Lee - as Linda said, come to Oakland sometime and see if "most of the gun owners in this fast declining country are hunters". Come and see what gun violence does. It's not the Auroras of the world that should make us want serious gun legislation, it's the thousands upon thousands that are killed and injured in handgun violence in this country every year.
The reason this psychopath was able to shoot 71 people is because of the confusion of people, thinking they might be experiencing some theatrical special effect. I have given up trying to understand why people resist gun control, but I'm wondering if we shouldn't be equally concerned about the violence in comic-book based entertainment. Actually, I am so numb from all this madness, I can't think straight.

Lezlie
Rugrat... yup.. 14 shootings in a 2 week period.. All illegal handguns and all of them under 17.

Lezlie: I personally think its the hyped up media on some fronts that gets people going and then possessing one too many firearms.. Jessica Refield who I wrote about in my blog that was killed last night in the theatre and narrowly missed being killed in the Toronto Eaton Centre last month. She is a good friend of my sons secretary. Another young life lost to guns.
Oh no the liberals are arguing about guns again. Hey at least they have intrinsic value, like gold or steel. And unlike derivatives, or political rhetoric.
Davey- thanks for your opinion.. like I said I respect others but I have mine.
@Zanelle: Then your friend must be equipped with superhuman vision which can allow him to see clearly even with teargas or another fumigant cluttering up the atmosphere.

Linda: I loved this. You're right about one thing: The Caped Crusader is basically not pro-violent behavior, and simply wants justice done--with panache, and cleverly.
Trouble is, every villain in each storyline is malevolence personified, and each has the ability to slaughter many innocent people, and generally has super powers of some kind via technological advances most of us would never dare dream up. This then shows up on screen as gratuitous, sensationalized violence, something kids then tend to play at.
Back in the 60's nothing looked, sounded nor reverberated in so real a fashion as it does now, with advances in theatre technology. It all SEEMED unreal, looked fake, and so was thought of naturally as being unreal. We could fake it ourselves in response, pretending we were on TV or in a movie.
I keep getting a feeling that we've forgotten it isn't always justified to make screen violence so seemingly REAL. Especially where young kids are concerned.

The thing is Poor Woman.. this chap loved video games but his choices were not violent. He played Guitar Hero all the time.
Go figure..
Shocking news this morning alright. I've no idea if the shooter is criminally insane; if not, he's in that grey area between it and normalcy. While I'd like to believe that some meaningful gun control will come of this, I'm at the point where I'll believe it hen I see it.
It's a terrible thing that happened, I'm at a loss for anything else to say.
Me too abrawang..
Kevin I am too.. I came out of summer hiding for this
Excellent post and I agree with every word.

Thanks to my dear friends Romantic Poetess and Tink for commenting.. See you in the fall
Can’t wrap my head around this one. It’s particularly unfathomable owing to the personality profile that’s emerging where everyone who was around him seems truly caught off guard, especially when considering the level of his pre-planning which now being exposed.

This and the shooting in Scarborough in one week .... enough. See you in the fall, Linda.
Various I did a blog today on another network and he might have had help
It did have to be said, and I thank you for saying it. And you said it so extremely well.
