Will We Ever See This on American TV?

Rate: 41 Flag

What are the chances of ever seeing something like this on American television? I would say nearly impossible in most places at this point with states battling back and forth on even allowing gay marriages and rights.

What would happen if it happened in front of tens of  thousands of American sports fans live?  Well, maybe it would pass at the AT&T Park in San Francisco, but no place else that I can think of.

It was just another Saturday night at Scotiabank Place in Toronto, when Alicia, a devoted Toronto Maple Leafs fan, arrived on the ice during the second intermission wearing a blindfold.

In a 'what the puck' moment Alicia looked up at the video scoreboard, and there contained a romantic message from her girlfriend Christina, an Ottawa Senators fan.

Normally being on the ice would cause friction between two fans of opposing teams, gay or not, but they immediately embraced and the crowd knew what was going to happen next.

Christina dropped to one knee and slid the engagement ring on Alicia's finger. After they shared a kiss the Senators mascot "Spartacat" proudly raised a sign that read: "She said yes!"

Same sex marriage was legalized in 2005 in Canada and in a fleeting memory I remember going to a Lesbian wedding the same year, and oddly enough a hockey game broke out in the backyard.

Personally, I feel it should not be news anytime a gay person does something that everyone else might consider normal, but seriously- admitting you are a Maple Leafs fan in public like that? That's a whole "goalie net" of wrong!

Who knows- maybe Alicia and Christina will have a child and it will end up a  *Habs fan! Now there is another scary thought!

Go Sens!

  *Habs- Montreal Canadians hockey team.

I think Canada frightens me.

r.
Listening to Pink and loving your post... hoping that we wake up sometime in the next ten years or so.
We won't see it in my lifetime!!

:-) / r
Very nice.

(Let's frighten them Murricans.)
Jon.. because we are not the straw men from the Wizard of Oz??:)

Jmac.. I dont see it in my lifetime.
Toritto: took the words right out of my mouth hahaha

Myriad.. have we not frightened them enough with the Keystone pipeline? :)

I saw that--and after initially be a bit taken aback thought--why the hell not! Canada is far ahead of the U.S. in a lot of ways. This is one.
Well at least we can see it on the American Internet! What a sweet moment.
I went to a boxing match and a hockey game broke out, but besides that, I have no idea how to play it!
The romantic gesture lives :-)
Beautiful. I hope we see it in my lifetime.
Mixed marriages seldom work. I mean ... Sens and Make Beleafs fans under the same roof? Puh-lease. That's worse than Habs-Wings fans under the same roof.

That said, it made the news because it was done the way it was, not because it was a gay marriage per se. Suspect if it had been a heterosexual couple, it'd have had the same coverage. It really was kind of neat.

I wish them well.
Linda, wow...good thing she didn't say no! I think before long we'll see something similar on American TV.
Nice.

BTW, Is walking on the ice without slipping a Canadian trick? That alone is pretty impressive. If all Canadians can do that, America's future as an international broomball power is in grave danger.
Truly what is going on in America seldom actually hits the news. It is more of an advertisement for a train of thought. That is the way I have seen it since I was a young paperboy throwing papers. I don't really consider it a perspective save for that it is yet another right that a group is trying to take away from the individuals. There is NEVER a candidate that wants to take away from corporations and seldom do candidates want to add to our freedoms save for the teabaggers who are completely deluded with their 'big gov't' bullcrap.

"Most men (and women) lead lives of quiet desperation."
- I forgot who.
That video of the proposal was beautiful. It made me cry.
Walter: Steve argued with me that it would happen here. I think if anyone did that here they would be hung out to dry like the prom queen gal last year. We are all one and the same.

Bellwether: Yes we can!!!

Scanner: Boanerges can attest to this. Nothing like playing road hockey and scream CAR when vehicles are coming down the street..:)
Kim: Yes it does
Boanerges: MY father cheered for the leafs all his life. The closet I came to the Leafs was a crush on Davy Keon.:)

Designanator.. Let's hope this happens.
Another Steve.. Are ya talking about Curling????? Can we talk about Curling?

Donuts: You have to go outside the US to hear the right news.. and it made me cry too.
I did think that it could be seen here in certain areas, but then I just found out that the first gay kiss cam in SF just happened in Aug of 2011. I have more doubts about whether this would happen in the U.S. now.
I have studied most if not all of the worlds sacred texts from the Avesta to the New Testament and Koran. I have found no taboos against same sex relationships. its all in peoples minds not Gods.
I love love. I loved this. I think it's more than possible. Iowa passed same sex marriage laws. This will happen. At least, let's imagine it.
So who won the game?
I loved this. America needs to open its eyes. It doesn't matter what type of couple it is, love is a beautiful thing and should be acknowledged for what it is - not who. The only reason I could see why America doesn't allow it is because of religious beliefs, but most people don't stick 100% to the Bible the way it is, so no one can honestly tell me it's because the Bible says it's wrong. Love is love and I think the Bible is wrong for saying otherwise. (Then again, it is full of many other contradictions, though that's a completely different debate.)

This Pink song couldn't fit more perfectly. Rated (:
Rugrat.. I am truly shocked and saddened that there are that few.

Jack: I wish you set some of these folks straight then
FROGGY... I hope so too.
martykelly.. let;s sing Lennons song and hope

Thanks Peeling an orange.:)

Larry: After two days of feeling like strangers in their own home, the Ottawa Senators are expecting a warmer welcome Tuesday at Scotiabank Place so that means they lost..:(

Addicted: Enemy sent this to me today and I flipped out..I was thrilled and wanted a lot of people to see that gay marriage should be legal everywhere
You've always been ahead of US.
Oh Canada, lovely song for a lovely country.
You are the pillar of Canada for me.
rated with love
How great is this! I can only wish that one day my daughter will be able to do this and our whole family will be there and it will be a wonderful celebration in front of god and everybody else. How can anyone say that this isn't true love and that everyone should be able to have it. I am thankful that my daughter has gone to a very liberal progressive school where everyone is accepted. But now she's out in the real world.
Maybe we'll catch up with Canada after the election. The absurd hate speech that permeates the media should calm down and cooler, more European thinking will prevail, when we re-elect President Obama.
Lovely post. I don't much support marriage but everyone should be free to wed if that's what they want.
Just saw that Crabby Golightly thing and plan to visit shortly. Congrats, Linda.
Yay is right Matt
Muse: now that was clever
Thanks Sheila..:)
Huggs RP
Barbara: The real world can be a scary place and so nice to see people cheering and not booing.

Beauty: Let's hope.
Fernsy: me too.. as for Crabby been there for about 3 months now. Its called a hard working education but can be fun
I know I'll never see that on American TV because I don't watch sports. But I did see one of the most romantic movies EVER last night: "I Love You Phillip Morris". Seriously. I loved it.
I think one reason this was so easily accepted and possibly would be even here is because they were both pretty. If they both had been unattractive, I don't think it would have made the news or the video. Attractive people can get away with most anything vs. the unattractive. It's not fair, but just is.
Canada is just more evolved as a nation. All around.
I'm KNOW there is hope! I have even heard of Dodgers/Giants fans successfully marrying! Really! (love the video, soooo romantic...)
Of course the video of Scotiabank Place in Toronto did not bring tears to my eyes, I am a tough guy. BTW if anyone knows what song is in the background, please let me know. As for Pink, they have a nice song but a wrong title; it should be, "Dear Mr. Wall Street." Thank you very much for this post, Linda. R
Beautiful moment, yay Canada and thanks for sharing!
I hope I see the day when everyone understands that you cannot regulate love between the sexes, any more than you can tell folks that it's wrong to love anyone with blue eyes.
Canadians get it right most of the time and way before we do in the States. I loved the part about a hockey game breaking out...

I had a flight of ideas imagining the ceremony if Prince William had wanted to marry a Karl instead of a Kate. It might have looked more like Edward II in the cowshed. R
Nope, I don't think we will see this on American tv anytime soon. We, the land of Puritans.
Ms Feike: I loved that movie too
I love Life: We will never know
Deborah: yes it is. no one tells women what to do and pregnant women get 9 months off with government pay and then MUM gets a baby bonus check from the government each month for each kid until they turn 18

Suzie: LOL Could be tricky:)
Barb: Me too
HUgs Thoth
Christine: Oh Canada
Rodney: stranger things have happened
Erica; makes me mad
Caroline.. lol you are so right
You never know! Eventually, hopefully...
Sweet! I'm been out of the loop on OS lately - this was a nice welcome back.
Just the Way You Are, by Bruno Mars.
Today I was over at Temple and, while I was there, I picked up a yard sign. The sign says to vote against the upcoming proposition that would define marriage as only between a man and a woman in my state. (Now that I look at it, that's sort of the opposite of what we'd normally think of as a proposition, isn't it?) The clergy at Temple and at a bunch of churches in the area are against the proposition, recognizing it as a civil rights issue. (There's a lunch counter not far from here where a famous sit-in took place, so civil rights issues aren't exactly foreign to the neighborhood.)

The way I see it, the main disadvantage to living in Canada is the weather. However, I notice it's changing - Spring is ridiculously early this year down here. We saw daffodils in FEBRUARY! I realize it's the South (I didn't grow up here), but this is nuts. You'll be temperate up there shortly. Of course, you might also be a lot smaller - I'm afraid about half your land mass might melt.
Kosher.. it was 70 degrees last weekend and I was freezing in the hood.
The only ice is way up north. Good tundra everywhere else.
I have always regarded it as a civil rights movement.
When it become reality?
HUGGGGGGGGGG
We can only hope to become as enlightened as our neighbors to the north.

Lezlie
You know, the vast majority of America DOESN'T CARE! It's the stinking minority of extremists who are running this country into the ground, just when we are becoming enlightened.

I say do it in America and then backlash against the wringers until they howl like dogs!

R and hugggggs.
Well, they're both for Ontario teams. It just wouldn't have worked for them if one had been a Habs fan.
