The French presence remains considerable in Côte d’Ivoire, especially through commodity houses engaged in the cocoa business. The upheavals threatened French business interests, critics claim, and it was really only Gbagbo’s threat to dissolve all foreign companies and nationalise the cocoa industry that led Paris to press the UN on military intervention.
