Why Paterno Should Never Have Covered It Up . . .

Rate: 5 Flag

Reposting from several months ago.  It was bad poetry then and remains that.  I wish that it was not based on truth.

After 30 years of intimacy

not always

but often enough

late at night

in the dark

during the after talk

they tell me.

"My uncle"

"My cousin"

"My coach"

"My frat big brother"

"My sister’s boyfriend"

Always someone they knew.

Forget stranger danger.

Then their voices change

in the dark

and they are boys again.

"I was 10."

"I was 8."

"I was 14."

"I was 12."

“And he told me never to tell.”

That is not when they cry.

Only at this …

"They already knew and nobody helped me."

Oh my yes, post this over and over. Very powerful. It is something we as humans need to come to terms with.
It was obvious from the very beginning that this old boys club ignored and looked the other way. And like Fast & Furious, the crime is still worse than the cover-up. Disgraceful. rated.
I think we have to realize that telling is not about ourselves but about stopping a predator, and that it is not about the institution this happens in but the fact that environments are chosen and targeted by predators for their very weaknesses. Let's stop blaming everyone BUT the predator. There may be no good excuse for the university's behavior or that of the Church for that matter...But there is an explanation. We need to fix that, plug the holes. Until then everyone around the predator becomes a collateral victim.
