OSX: On the cusp of five years on Open Salon

For some long time OSers the point of time has arrived when they've been blogging on the site for five years!
In my case, I'm a few weeks away from the 5 year mark. In recognition that May, 2008 was when many of the beta members joined here I… Read full post »
RE-POSTED: The George W. Bush Presidential Library
Update: on the occasion of the George W. Bush "Libarry" being dedicated today I am re-posting this story for approximately the fourth time here on OS. The first publish date was June, 2008 when OS was in beta. It's hard to remember all of the characters from the Bush era… Read full post »
Enjoying Boston one fine May day, 1977
The tragic event in Boston has been on our minds since yesterday in a huge way. While I'm not a resident of the city nor ever have been, the time I have spent in the city has always been upbeat and positive.
A number of installments ahead I had planned… Read full post »
Last of the winter wine, part seven
It was Sunday, February 27, 1977 and the day started out as most weekend days did at college, slowly picking up momentum as the hours progressed. As was the case with so many weekends the homework was never finished on Friday night or during Saturday but… Read full post »
Wild Turkeys from this A.M.
This morning I photographed a number of the turkeys that have stayed on our property 24/7 since I started feeding them birdseed last fall. Numbering around 30 they gather once a day to have a meal of birdseed averaging around 60 pounds of birdseed/week as a group total, not individually.… Read full post »
Last of the winter wine, part six
After a really fun Friday night at the disco dance, Maria and I were into another Saturday in Providence. The back of the cold winter was seemingly broken by the forecast of a weekend in the mid '40s with a clear Saturday and some minor precipitation… Read full post »
Forwarded!
A quick post this evening to say I'm forwarding this message as per Stacey's comment below:

Remember the days of chain letters when you ignored the message conveyed in the chain letter? It just occurred to me that a blog is the perfect way to… Read full post »
Last of the winter wine, part five
The week of February 20th, 1977 was the period that brought all of the disparate elements I had been thinking about for my degree project into a solid vision of the final piece. The visit to the aquarium the previous Friday turned out to be a major… Read full post »
Last of the winter wine, part four
After a great time in Boston the day before it was back to chores and homework the next day. Now that we were a week into the second semester some of the free time we had enjoyed during the wintersession period was going to be less… Read full post »
Last of the winter wine, part three
February 18, 1977 was another cold day from what had turned into a brutally cold winter. With a forecast in the mid '20s, Maria and I had plans to head up to Boston around lunch time with the intention of seeing the New England Aquarium followed by… Read full post »
Last of the winter wine, part two
It was Tuesday, February 15, 1977 and the second day of the new semester. After an unplanned, but ultimately romantic Valentine's Day (and night) that had just ended hours earlier we were rather tired and had it been Saturday we would have slept in… Read full post »
Tomorrow is the 10th Anniv. of the Iraq invasion
March 19, 2003:
It will be interesting to see how little airplay this 10th anniversary gets tomorrow...

There are a lot of politicians, pundits, and others who beat the loud drums in the lead up to the war. They will all have the word "Iraq"… Read full post »
Last of the winter wine, part one
In the last installment the story ended on the evening of February 13, 1977. In this newly titled part of the series the tale continues from the same evening...
Looing back in 2013 at that point of senior year with 20/20 hindsight I was interested to come up… Read full post »
Seven days without Stacey
The sad news came last Saturday morning when I went back to see if there were more comments on the most recent post entitled Ekphrasis by Stacey Youdin. I was in disbelief when his blog came up with the message:
Alma mater Oscar special edition
I usually don't get too worked up about the Oscars, but this year is different. Fellow RISD alumn and Family Guy creator, Seth MacFarlane is the emcee (naturally, you knew the Seth Family Guy and emcee part already) of the ceremony tonight.
Unfortunately, I wasn't a student at school when… Read full post »

The winter of our big-content, part eight
It was Sunday, February 6th, 1977 and Maria would be heading home to Maine for one week. As well, I'd be heading out of Providence the next day. Over breakfast we decided we'd both be back in Providence by the following Saturday afternoon which cut… Read full post »
Fun and games as Burger King's Twitter is hacked
I happend to see a tweet by a friend on Twitter yesterday just as the news of the hacking of the Burger King Twitter account was spreading around the Twittersphere. (Unfortunately, even some racial slurs got into the mix here as you can see from the tweets below.)

OSX: Never ever give your posts a self-thumbs up

Occasionally the question arises, "Can I add a thumbs up to my own post?"
The answer is no and below is a warning to any who might attempt this:
(Note: this is part 46 and the first installment for 2013 of an… Read full post »
The winter of our big-content, part seven
Before I get back to the story in Providence, a very Happy Valentine's Day to all Open Saloners!!!
The date was January 28th, 1977 and we were enjoying a one day heat wave with a break in the frigid weather. 40 degrees was in major contrast to… Read full post »
Scenes from today's winter storm (updated)
Today's storm in the northeast is not over as I write this at 9:00 pm. Sometime tomorrow the snow will end. Meanwhile, I have some photos and videos I shot between 3:30 and 4:30 today.

I also had a shot of my VW in the… Read full post »
Computer animation of the new Tappan Zee Bridge
For anyone in the New York metro area the news about the design of the new $3.1 billion Tappan Zee bridge has been with us for a few months, however a video was just released last week that shows the chosen design in a computer animation that was just posted… Read full post »
Happy 35th Anniversary of the Blizzard of '78!
OSers from New England who were around in February, 1978 don't need a reminder about this big story from the past!
In my case, I was in Manhattan when the Blizzard of '78 came blasting through and while we had snow it was nothing like what happened in Providence and… Read full post »
Open Salon Rock Group's Quiet Afternoon
The Open Salon Rock Group is back from its sabbatical and today we are presenting our first song since 2012 when we had a lot of fun with the presidential campaign playing songs that were designed to poke a lot of fun at the Republican candidates.
Today's song, Quiet Afternoon,… Read full post »
