Frank and Dweezil Zappa | Open Salon Rock Group

Rate: 4 Flag

This musical story starts back in 2010 in the month of December. I was talking to my brother on the phone and he mentioned he had just done a show with Frank Zappa's son, Dweezil. That show was at the Beacon Theater in the city on December 17th and several fans present that night posted videos on YouTube. He said he could be seen in one of them off to the side of the stage, but I still haven't located the video in question.

Moving forward to March of 2011 and the Open Salon Rock Group is formed and the following month some of our performances are posted on OS.

Muffin Man as performed by Dweezil Zappa and his band. My brother's sound company provided the sound reinforcement that night. (He also  provided the sound reinforcement this year on a multi-state tour with Dweezil and the band.)

Moving ahead in time to February, 10th--last Friday, one of my friends here on OS, Jack Heart, left the following comment on the Open Salon Rock Group Melissa post:

"I still want to hear you do some Zappa bro! How about ‘Wino Man’ “watch me now I’m going to eat the label.”

It just so happened that I had the sheet music for Frank Zappa's song Catholic Girls so we decided to record that over the weekend and below is our instrumental version of the song:

Here is a studio version of Frank Zappa's Catholic Girls complete with lyrics which are a bit risqué...

Wonderful. And risque. But all right. And I was raised a Catholic Girl.
Nothing like Zappa..
HUGGGGGGGGGGG
Thank You John. I was getting goose bumps watching him play that guitar without his shirt in that old film above Dweezil (Talk about a boy named Sue. Zappa went Johnny Cash one better but that’s the way he always had to do it). I used to go see him every Halloween night. It was what we did on Halloween. He would always have a ringer that would blow you away with the first riff. And you would wonder how anybody could outdo this guy. Then Zappa would come on and never move just his hands flying over the guitar strings and you would forget all about the first guy. In my opinion nobody ever could play like Zappa and I seen a lot of them up close and personnel. Jorma Kaukonen, Leslie West, Joe Satriani. Even snorted coke with Joe Perry in the bathroom of L'Amours in Brooklyn. Hey Joe glad to see they finally got you out of that stall. No I am not a cop! My friend sold you the coke! Zappa had something special that he could just transmit right through his guitar and into your soul. The only thing I have ever seen that could ever come close was maybe Carlos Santana. That was what you would say when you wanted to annoy a club band: “yea you guys can play Zeppelin better than Zeppelin but we want to hear Zappa!” Even Joe Satriani had a hard time with it. You guys did a dam good job!
@Mary yea I went to Catholic school too. That’s what node it so funny it was so true,
Mary, Linda, and Jack ~ thanks so much for the great comments! When I saw Kenny Loggins in concert back in '07 he mentioned to the audience that he was a 'recovering Catholic'--that brought a lot of laughter from everyone! Jack, that's a great group of stories in your comment and while I have been aware of Frank Zappa for ages I don't know all of his songs so this is a good time for me to listen to many more of them!
