Why is Herman Cain still standing? After all of the verbal and cognitive missteps, ridiculous obliviousness to the most basic knowledge about political affairs (exceeding even Palin and Bachmann's famous ignorance and distortions), violations of campaign financing laws, groping and sexual harassment (with four women known to have been involved, with two of them now named) - with his campaign and the candidate himself adopting conflicting responses to the allegations - his standing in the polls continues to stay high and he shows no signs of disappearing.
The answer to this puzzle I think lies in the fact that Mr. Cain represents for his supporters an anti-politician politician. His simple answers to complex questions and his folksy and even mistake-prone manner are precisely what's appealing to his fans. He is uncultivated, unmodulated, unabashed and "speaks from the heart" and that's what they like about him.
This says something very important about the times we are in now. The wrenching and deeply disturbing seismic changes underway in American life - the fracturing of the American Dream's underlying material basis - is having profound repercussions on everyone except the 1%. The Tea Party and the Occupy Movement are also responses to this crisis. This crisis is deep and it's not going away. It's getting worse and people are increasingly aware of this. America as people have known it historically, and America as people have dreamed it to be, are over - forever.
Here comes one of those 1%'ers in the person of the impolitic Mr. Cain, a kind of black version of "shoot from the hip" malapropist Mr. Bush, a member of the financial elite who seems to be "one of us" to those who like him, and who feels people's pain and deep anxieties (a la Bill Clinton and Barack Obama) but reassures his listeners that we are not in the twilight of our empire (echoes of Ronald Reagan). Everythin's goin' be alrigh'.
Of course, everythin's not goin' to be alrigh'. But right-wing radio show hosts (which is where Mr. Cain got his policy training and nearly everything he "knows" about politics) don't ever tire of telling their listeners that it will all be fine and we can go back to what we were if we can just electrify a fence between us and those damn immigrants down South...
Conventional wisdom says that the impolitic Mr. Cain can't succeed in the GOP race. It awaits to be seen. He's already weathered what would have felled any other candidate. If a few of the women he sexually harassed get together as is planned and share their stories in a press conference, perhaps he won't survive that. But if anyone can, he can. Because his candidacy is not animated by the normal factors and these are not normal times.
The fracturing of the electorate and of the populace mirrors the fracturing of the historic American social compact where hard work and sufficient desire will be rewarded, even if only modestly in the form of a small home and picket fence.
The American Dream is dead. Long live the American Dream.

"I am the Koch Brothers brother from another mother."
In the current iteration of bread and circus, Cain is simply the Kochs circus (one of many!).
To your point about the "American Dream", and the polarization of people, politics and wealth, I cannot add anything other than "amen, and good-night."
I didn't know about that Koch brothers quote, but it's fabulous!
I actually think that Cain is serious as a candidate. He might not have started out as a serious candidate, but I think he has become one. Yes, he doesn't have hardly any organization, but then, the guy's a fly by the seat of his pants guy and it fits his character.
But for Americans to seriously consider him (or some of the others) as presidential material is beyond comprehension.
I know lots of people (as do you, Dennis) fault me for sticking with and finding redeeming qualities in Obama…but Cain has no redeeming qualities at all that I can see.
The entire Republican field seems to be a slap in the face to the Republic.
I have a conservative friend at work who, back when Palin was the favorite Republican presidentical wanna-be, proudly proclaimed that he could happily vote for her as president. This is a decent guy…a friendly, intelligent, considerate, caring guy who apparently goes unconscious when matters of politics are involved.
I do not know what is going on with conservative America right now, but I still am of the mind that Obama will be a one-term president—and I dread who they will allow to steer the ship of state in his place.
"Never underestimate the ignorance of the american citizenry (nor its politicians), especially as the empire nears collapse. "

Cian is still standing (and in fact garnering more contributions) because they see nothing wrong with what he did.
After all, women are just chattel to the Cains of the world and their supporters.
I agree that the GOP field is filled with absurdities. As for it being incomprehensible why so many people like Cain, that's the point of my post to lay out why I think this is in fact happening. When something happens that we find hard to understand because it doesn't make sense to us from our perspective, there is nonetheless a reason why it is happening. And that's what the challenge is to understand.
Mark - yep, appropriate comment.
Amy: You are right that the Cains of the world regard women as mere chattel for their money, power and privilege. But there are women among his supporters and I don't think it is as simple as you say that it is. The political landscape is filled with evidence in the last several years especially of massive discontent. Cain's popularity among a certain segment of the population is one expression of that. Otherwise, why have other candidates been knocked out of the face for president for less than what's been revealed to date about Cain?
By the way, Karen Kraushaar, the second woman to be identified, is a major problem for Cain because she has been spokesperson for, among other agencies, ICE. Those who want to deny these charges of sexual harassment and worse will find it hard to call her a gold digger. The very fact that she was selected to be the front person for government agencies is an indication that she brings with her the air of credibility.
Interesting take! I think you're right that Mitt Romney's last year's model. I think they will end up with him since no one else is going to last or emerge from the pack. Cain is finally being hurt by the revelations as he is finally upsetting the women in his fan base whose support has halved since October's poll. Having said that, overall, it doesn't much matters who the GOP ends up with. What matters, more than anything, is the Occupy Movement and the larger political opening for revolutionary changes that the OM is part of the cutting edge for.
