Bio
In this writing workshop and citizen's blog I'm exploring various short forms, often from a satiric angle. My interests include politics, culture and the human comedy; old and new media; social theory and urban ethnography; the commercialization, corporatization and tabloidization of everything; sustainability; Unitarianism (UU); coffee; and writing (sorry, I mean providing content). Magazine Quiz: Fake or Real?

Rate: 4 Flag

By Daniel Rigney

As a lifelong magazine and newspaper lover (thank you, Weekly Reader and Junior/Senior Scholastic),  I’m always on the lookout for a fresh read.  Some periodicals have unusual titles that sound made up. But in fact, aren’t all periodical titles made up by someone, somewhere, sometime?

Here for your amusement  is my personal selection of periodical titles bearing odd names, whether real or imagined. Can you tell which are real and which are fake?

Give yourself 10 points for each title whose ontological status you identify correctly.  A perfect score of  120 wins you a free imaginary magazine of your choice, subject to availability. Scroll down for answers.

Gardens and Guns

Cigar Aficionado

Journal of Irreproducible Results

Locomotive Engineers Journal

The Farmer’s Wife

Gun Dog

Intellectual Digest

Everybody’s Digest

Sexology

Modern Priscilla

Crawdaddy

Open Salon

Okay, time to score yourself. Please scroll down for correct answers.

A: All periodical titles named above exist (or have existed) in real life, as documented here, here and here.

How did you do?

Darn it all to hecky-heck! I only got 80, that's not even passing!!!
Everyone who plays this game passes! Thanks, ccd.
Also, Gardens and Guns, Gun Dog, Everybody's Digest, Modern Priscilla? Really???!!!
I was stumped by Crawdaddy. (Don't even know what it means). So that means I won't get a free imaginary magazine of my choice. :o(

Thank you for a delightful post!

Yes, cc. I got the idea for this piece while browsing in a neary Bricks and Mortar Bookstore. "Gardens and Guns" was there, and I browsed it. Something for both the Southern Lady and the Southern manlyman.

F, Crawdaddy is (or was) a music/culture mag. I know from living near Cajun country that crawdaddy is the nickname for crawfish, an animal resembling a shrimp but living on land. I grew up with these, and I eat crawfish several times a year. They taste a little like cricket, but in a good way. The last ones I had came from an aquafarm in China, apparently.
I got a perfect score.
But I cheated.
Dianne, you scamp! Congratulations anyway for making it to the end of the list.
Something for everyone. I get all my info online now. But magazines in the thrift stores still intrigue me. I believed these were all real so I win.
All right, Zanelle! Congratulations. Your free imaginary magazine is in the mail, and thanks!
Journal of Irreproducible Results is my all-time favorite periodical title.
Me too. I should donate a subscription to the St.MU library, along with a parody edition of Social Forces, tentatively renamed Social Farces.
