Ah, another Thursday, another dose of ear candy for our collective enjoyment. This week's song, "The Girl's Distracted," from the album Every Night by Saturday Looks Good To Me, sounds like the product of an impromptu evening hootenanny by your coolest friends had they spent the entire morning and afternoon listening to 60's sunshine pop and Phil Spector records. The combination of lead Saturday Fred Thomas' slightly-slackerish vocals and the assured deadpan of sometimes-vocalist Betty Marie Barnes alone would make this song worth your time, but wait, there's more! The lyrics, about a boy trying to get the attention of a girl who's supposedly "distracted" (but is probably just giving him the brush-off, demonstrated when she specifically tells her mom to tell him that she's not there when he calls) are spunky without being cloying. Best of all, the keyboard and string bridge in the middle makes the whole thing seem way bigger than the sum of its parts, considering that this super-polished rave-up is all over in less than two minutes. Those Saturday kids mean business! Go get the free download here:  https://www.polyvinylrecords.com/index.asp (after you arrive, click the "audio/video" tab at the top; from there, the song is near the bottom of the "audio/video" page). If you like it, go to their MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/saturdaylooksgoodtome) to listen to some songs from their 2007 album, Fill Up the Room. If you like that, then you also might enjoy hearing some of Betty Marie Barnes' solo stuff (especially the delightful "The Sea Song") on her MySpace, http://www.myspace.com/bettymariesongs. You have your assignment for the week. See you next Thursday.

I couldn't find the link for the free download in that first url. Maybe I'm just and idiot, but bands with sentences for names--"Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin," or "Saturday Looks Good To Me"--doesn't help when trying to remember the band name, either!)
Thanks for the heads-up, Orbitboy...I didn't realise that the design of that site won't let me link directly to the "audio/video" page. I'll edit the post to let everybody know that they have to click the "audio/video" tab after they arrive at the Polyvinyl Records homepage.
Thanks, that worked. I liked the song, too!
