Giant Earthquake & Tsunami: Gay People Among the Affected

Rate: 9 Flag

A magnitude 8.9 earthquake hit Japan yesterday.

Among the affected are surely some gay people.

So can this issue be on the OS cover now?

Yes, there's an open call for videos but there are also other Open Salon stories that should be getting some play.

As I post this, a post is still prominently visible on the cover from yesterday about Gaining perspective on Venice Beach, featuring a pleasant day at the beach. That's very sad, and surely speaks to the overall relevance of the site.

Note: I think it's great there is a liberal amount of gay coverage here, but really I wish there were as much attention to other matters sometimes.

I believe that kerry and emily and the webmasturbators are secretly repiglican tea partyers because, the more we all support the REAL people of WI and in other issues, the slower this place gets.
I don't think they have the fucking balls to admit this so, I'm calling them out right now~~

Hey OShitters, what is yout REAL reason for this deliberate slowness?
Maybe there are ways you could get posts about the earthquake and tsunami on the cover.

Perhaps a tearjerker with this title: "Transgendered Japanese child's dresses destroyed by earthquake; she is forced to evacuate Sendai in jeans and Harley Motorcycle t-shirt."

Or this: "Open Call: Your favorite Red Cross shelter foods."

Or this one, guaranteed to get on the cover: "Pope Destroys Japan By Praying for Earthquake."

Or maybe this: "Tsunami Destroys Sendai; Many Pets Left Homeless."

Or this: "Japan Destroyed: American Idol Contestants are Safe."
So the Tea Party will oppose aid unless limited to heteros?
mishima, I considered all of those headlines. The idea about Red Cross Emergency foods sent me into a revery in which I remembered fondly those 55 gallon olive drab drums of water stored in the basement of my junior high school. After being emptied, the helpful yellow instructions stencilled on the side exhorted us to use them as commodes. But enough about me...

Brian it seems so, doesn't it? I would very much like OS to be just a tiny bit sensitive to something that has such far-reaching effects on people all over the world. Just because it doesn't affect the editors in New York doesn't mean it's not important.
Coyote, only 3% of gay stories written by gay make the cover. About 2% are written by gays. If you look at the cover on a daily basis, you will find that only 5% of all cover stories are gay related. I am surprised more of the cover wasn't given to what is essentially martial law being enacted in Michigan. I grew up in earthquake country, California, so perhaps this story isn't as shocking to me as some...I know Japan is well prepared for this, and the people of Japan are in my prayers. xox
Coyote, I should also add that I have never been on the cover for a gay related story. I have been here almost three years. I have been on the cover for my interview of a Tea Party candidate. xox
To be fair, Open Salon is not a news site per se. There are plenty of stories about the quake and tsunami at all the news sites on the Web, and OS shouldn’t put a story about it on the cover unless it offers a fresh perspective. Also, I’m not necessarily in love with all of the p.c. aspects of OS, but to take a poke at their coverage of gay issues seems a little unfair, especially considering that there are no gay-oriented stories on the front page at the moment and several that address other national and international issues.
Cuss, it really goes without saying that Open Salon can do what it wants. But it seems fair to offer critique. This is just saying there is more news needing coverage than gay issues, nudity, puppies, and sugar. The absence of tsunami coverage today was really conspicuous and I'm happy to see Coyote brave enough to post this.
Well, I wrote a post about my experience in Tokyo. Probably not that many OS people in Japan.
Kent, I get your point, but the two posts that Coyote mentioned mostly just link to news stories available on the web. If someone had written something with original content, I'm sure the editors would have highlighted it. I'll bet that on Monday you'll see some posts about it on the front page (the editors don't seem to do anything on Saturday).
But we have to have cartoons on the cover, so unless someone draws a cartoon of a tsunami, the Japanese are out of luck. Maybe Monday will bring more serious stuff. When I heard about it, I immediately thought about the people I knew when I lived in Japan in the 80s. I lived on the west coast, so not the central quake area, but I think the whole country was rocked by this. Honshu is not that big. I read in today's paper that the waves sank small boats in Santa Cruz, in CA. I expect there will be damage reports coming in for days.
The Cover is like the crusty, fetid thing that covers up the rose in that LSD hallucination Jerry and I shared back in the day. It serves only to entertain, the good stuff is inside.
