Muttering Against the Wind

- Bio
- Born in the early 60's to a conservative Southern family. Woke up to the bigger world around me and started the process of becoming a free-thinker in the mid- 70's. That has been an interesting process that is still going on today.
I grew up listening to The Beatles, The Stones, Zeppelin, Floyd, Tull and the like. Eventually I gravitated towards Dylan and The Band as I grew older (and wiser!). Music really helped me to start thinking outside the Southern Baptist box.
I am proud to be a Liberal Democrat, and I vote!
I have the same regard for religion that Jesus did.

Checking In Again
I never actually left the building.
My physical health hasn't been the issue. No carpal tunnel or anything worse.
Neither has incarceration been the issue. A spot on metaphor perhaps, (maybe I'll post more on that later),... but it's not the actual reason I've been so scarce around thes… Read full post »
Tequila and Mist - A Rewrite
This story takes place almost 20 years ago and miles away from the nearest people at the end of a long shellrock road that meanders down into a thick overhead covering of trees and comes to a stop beside a mangrove bordered little bay. My tale recalls a wondrously drunk… Read full post »
the sneaking was the best and the worst part
the sneaking was the best and the worst part
waking and leaving before light, already jonesing
the family safe and warm, sleeping still, not knowing
me outside in the driveway
next to the neighbors house, fumbling
to scrape together a hit, shaking
and sick to the stomach, then bette… Read full post »

Quietly, Right Now

Quietly,...
Right now,
I am thinking...
Of slowly...
Leaning in...
Face to face...
To finally
Taste at last...
That long held promise on your lips.
Yes,...
I am...
Despite
Everything.
Though thought
Be far
From action,… Read full post »
Joni's "Blue" - A Starting Point
"Blue" - Joni Mitchell
When I first heard this album, in 1981, ten years after its release (and nineteen years after my own birth), "Blue" floored me. In one listening, Joni, easily and obviously became the warmest and most honest person I had e… Read full post »
Languid Kissing Fusion
I am not Good...Yet
On Being Blighted
Withered strips of roadside turf obscenely wedged between
Eight asphalted lanes of commuting caffeinated crazies
And the cement sidewalks we reserve for the trudging proletariat,
They, these little withered strips,
And the mangy moth-eaten hedges that border
The fungal p… Read full post »
Prayer I Can Believe In
Haiku: All This Time
All of Those Things
All of those things
You said about me,
My regrettably hurtful words and expressions and deeds,
Are all true.
They happened just as you said they did.
How splendid of you to recall them with such clarity.
Yet equally true (context… Read full post »
Facebook Christians and the Dirty Idea of Clean Needles

Recently, I was involved in a Facebook dustup between myself and several other Christians regarding the “doctrinal soundness” of passing out clean needles to IV drug users. The conversation started when a friend (who happens to be a Christian minister) initiall/… Read full post »
To Be More Me
To be more me, with
Less effort to be what I ought
Or what might be more impressive.
Tempting, those are. Always.
A waste though, in the end.
Sometimes, I figure that out
Quickly. Sometimes, not.
Disappointing, when I realize I gave in.… Read full post »
A Clay Footed Boy
Each
day’s momentum
Creates torque from accumulated circumstances
And rends each day beyond the scope
Of choice, reason, and hope.
What of the dreams of a clay footed boy?
Treading forward, first with care, then surely,
Nimble and quick,
Searching for meaning beyond the circus trick
A shove from each d… Read full post »
Open Door
Isn't timing everything?
Like when you clutched me to you. Hard.
Did you know how much I needed that?
When your face buried in my neck
and I felt your hot sigh - then quickly wet and gone.
Tears? No.
Were your lips… Read full post »
What I Have Now
Ahhhh!
The relief of KNOWING.
Finally,…
What it is to be madly, foolishly, I-don't-care, deliciously head over heels in love.
I have loved before,
But always within the construct of meeting others expectations of who I should love,… Read full post »
Your Love is Indelible
Your love is indelible,
Ingrained veneration stamped upon my soul.
Your love is feral,
Feline maternal and fierce.
Your love is boundless,
An amaranthine ocean upon my shore.
Your love is manna,
A daily miracle for this… Read full post »
Junkie Blues - Because You Called Today
Because you called today
I hated myself a little bit
For believing you
And wanting to send you money.
Because you called today
I imagined your pasty complexion,
Your glassy, red, nervously averted eyes,
And your hair swiped quickly into place with dirty hands.
Because you

O My Souls Answer
Powerful Spoken Word Poetry re: 9/11
Christian War and Christian Peace
I flagrantly oppose our ongoing wars,
but I totally support our troops. No American
casualties are justified in Iraq or Afghanistan.
How we as a nation have ever gotten so apathetic and numb to the
idea of American soldiers dying is something I'll never understand.

Where I Go

I do reside in a home,
As snug and cozy as can be,
Yet there comes those times when far afield I roam
To see what I can see.
Summer might beckon lazily
Or Spring may call with its youthful zest.… Read full post »
Just This Morning (Version Two)
Just this morning
While listening to engine whines
And blurring past highway signs,
Sitting atop foam and springs and patterned beige upholstery,
Bouncing mildly as suspensor shocks and radial tires
Handled the road that needed repair,
For a wisp of a moment,
I became… Read full post »
