Guess This Video Is Relevant Again!

Rate: 2 Flag

Not that I'm excited about that. I just found out I'm pregnant, and it completely freaks me out to read about what happened to Samantha Burton. All she wanted was a second opinion, and her doctor called state authorities.

"For three days, a pregnant Samantha Burton was confined to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital against her will, ordered by a Florida court to bed rest and any medical care necessary to sustain her troubled pregnancy."

There's more here, and I am really frightened that this still happens. I want my child. We're excited. But I am still here, and I still have rights, don't I? That's a question I really need an answer to, before my hospital or ob answers it for me.

bstrangely,
Your question underscores what is so much at stake and why we have to fight not only for the right to choose but the right to control our bodies and our lives. We cannot be paralyzed in the face of these onslaughts from religious fanatics hell bent on making women subservient to men. Thank you for your post.
thank you for your comment, debra! i don't think people realize how dangerous this kind of overreaching is. where would they draw the line? can a woman be arrested for buying cigarettes while pregnant? for eating sushi? regardless, doctors are not infallible, and the fact that she was denied the opportunity to seek a second opinion is very disturbing.
Hi bstrangely: Mazel tov (Yiddish for Congratulations)on your pregnancy! This is truly frightening, and outrageous. I think that another outrage , that could happen, (if we don't resist this current direction is not only the elimination of Roe v Wade and birth control), but also forced gynecological exams for women in society as a whole. There have been reports that some women prisoners have been subjected to this. Thanks for this post.
thanks carol! i really do find this creepy. the worst part is the fact that it will discourage women from being honest with their doctors, since you will have next to no control over what you would be jailed for. the only defense is secrecy.

lesh, please read the story i linked. a woman was incarcerated by her doctor at a hospital because she wanted a second opinion while pregnant. should that be a crime? this video was intended to show exactly how intrusive and unconstitutional attempts to protect fetuses like this are. in the end, her baby still died, even though she was not allowed to leave the hospital. they saved no one, and they violated her rights. at the hearing, her fetus was given an advocate and she was not.
