Andy Griffith is Dead at 86

Rate: 15 Flag

Andy Griffith has died at age 86 at his home on Roanoke Island in North Carolina.  He was an actor, a musician, a comic, and a legend in the U.S..

Griffith came to fame as a comic with a piece called "what it was, was football"  in 1953.

He showed ggreat potential as an actor as well with stand out performances that covered the most widely separated avenues imaginable, first in "No Time for Seargents" first on Broadway then in a critically acclaimed film.

He startled the nation with his performance in "A Face in the Crowd"  Which seems oddly prescient when it is compared to people like Rush Limbaugh and Glen Beck.

Add this film to your queue if you haven't seen it.

Now not long after this film Andy took a guest shot on the Danny Thomas show, Make Room for Daddy, as a slightly crooked southern Sherriff.   He did this spot so well that he was spun off into his own show, "Andy of Mayberry" that became "The Andy Griffith Show" by it's second season.

The show was an unqualified success and he assembled a veteran cast of talented actors to support him.  The Andy Griffith Show ran until 1969 when it became Mayberry RFD and fortunately died when CBS killed of the "rural comedies".

Andy also went out of his way to promote bluegrass music with his frequent use of live musical performances in the show, one of his favorites was the Darlin's

Those of you who are musicians may note that this is being performed live on the set, proving the skills that Andy held as a musician.  The show changed with the time, growing less irreverent and more socially conservative as th seasons went on.  This reflected the changes in Andy's personal outlook too.

The nation will miss Andy, I know I will.  The way he portrayed Andy was for me a micrcosm of what has gone wrong with our world he played the role with courtesy, respect and common sense.  Unlike his foil and deputy Cousin Barney Fife.  Fife was obssessed with rules and strict interpretation of laws.  Played by frequent co-star in other projects Don Knotts.

Andy lived a long life, he made such a significant addition to our life and our culture that he will live on forever in the eternity of syndication.

Thanks for this, Bob. Andy was a favorite of mine. I believe he got his start acting in the perennial outdoor production of The Lost Colony, a popular tourist attraction every summer in Nags Head.
Absolutely right Matt, Sorry I forgot that.
Wow I had no idea he did so much in his early career! I remember him, of course from the Andy Griffith show, which I still love and watch.

It's sad to see him go, for he was one of those greats in my mind. Not quite as great as James Arness or Jimmy Stewart, but still great and a part of an era in television that showed us a better world, and how better a world we could be.

Thanks for the tribute post, from a fellow fan.
Bob, thanks for this great tribute to Andy and this is certainly sad news! Back in the day I must have watched nearly every episode of The Andy Griffith Show. Another wonderful talent who will be missed by a huge number of fans.
Very nice tribute. I loved the show, still do. He was so funny and real. he really could brng a character to life

I just adored Andy and thank you for showing his other side. A Face in the Crowd is a cultural masterpiece. The group he sang with known as the Darlings on the show were The Dillards with Maggie Peterson. I am not sure if Denver Pyle (Briscoe Darling) was actually a musician. Andy Griffith will never really leave us and we are blessed for that.
You can't find a bad word about the man, and it wouldn't be read by me anyway.
I admired him.
His performance as Lonesome Rhodes, so completely different from his real-life persona and his role on The Andy Griffith Show, is proof that he definitely had chops as an actor. I think he would have made a terrific Elmer Gantry as well. But I loved him as Sheriff Andy too. He was definitely an American original.
Thanks Bobbot. I think he also did a show called "Matlock" later in life. The Andy Griffith show was a contribution to our culture.
I loved his work in the movie about the woman with the Pie Diner.

He was also a stalwart for progressive causes.

r.
He was a class act, and truly a role model.
RIP, Andy.

Bobbot, Why did you drag Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck into this? The Griffith character in "A Face in the Crowd" was not specifically political. He was a demagogue, skilled at manipulating the masses through use of the airwaves. He is said to have been modeled after Arthur Godfrey, who was not known for politics, but for his tyrannical treatment of his associates and his enormous popularity.
That aside, I never watched Griffith on TV, but I think "No Time for Sergeants" is one of the greatest film comedies of all time. A brilliant tour de force by old Andy.
This is gonna be a Great Entertainment.
Oops . . .

I bumped into Arthur. He not me.

Ay Vent.
There are going to be a lot of sad people in the south tonight.
I think there were a lot of endearing things about the Mayberry show and Andy. The show was a staple in our house when I was growing up. Of course whenever the Darling Family appeared on it, I would get teased the next day in school: "Your family was on TV last night!" I miss shows like that and Carol Burnett. I'm not a fan of the reality shows like Real Housewives and Dog the Abounty Hunter. What a lot of crap!
Another one of our childhood icons gone. Andy represented all-American wholesomeness to me. It was good that he lived.

Interesting but just last week I came across a YouTube of Andy Griffith performing the theme song from the "Andy Griffith Show". I never knew that there were lyrics to it. And (here's a secret about me), over the years I have enjoyed recordings of Griffth performing "old fashioned" gospel music.
Wow, that's a big number for me. Thank you all for reading and making your voices heard.
Such a big part of my childhood. Great tribute, bobbot.
